"We used Pyramid to install quartz countertops in our kitchen, as well as a sink, faucet and garbage disposal (also used their subcontractor to install backsplash). This review is about the countertops and sink/faucet/disposal job-- we loved working with Bogi and the project came out beautifully. We didn't see the quartz we wanted in the Pyramid warehouse (although they had a great selection of granite and other stones), so Bogi suggested we look at MSI near Dulles. Bogi ordered the slabs we selected from MSI, coordinated the plumber to come when the counter top installers were ready for him, and even had them come back to clean up after the backsplash was installed by their subcontractor another day (he left some spilled grout on the countertop that we didn't notice until after he left.) The workers were clean, courteous and efficient."

"Let me start by saying I am thrilled with my new countertops. Everyone I dealt with at this company was friendly and professional. They have very competitive prices and really stand out by offering a free sink and free installation. The two gentlemen that did my installation were absolutely wonderful. They were meticulousand ensured everything was level and properly supported prior to laying the granite. They laid drop cloths and cleaned behind themselves as they went. I will certainly be recommending this company to anyone looking to purchase granite countertops.

"We chose DMV Kitchen and Bath to remodel our small master bathroom and guest bath. Joell was fantastic to work with. His suggestions were incredibly helpful yet he never tried to push up to spend more than we wanted. Our bathrooms are light, modern, and beautiful. The difference is amazing. I highly recommend DMV."

Customers say: True professional

"Devin (the owner of Marvel Homes) is an AMAZING person to work with. He is punctual, very responsive and I really enjoyed working with his team. He does not cut corners with his work and you can be assured that his work is of the highest quality. He was a little more expensive than past contractors I used but you pay for what you get. I had someone put in a oven hood and they did not know the industry standards which resulted in the hood not working after a short period. Devin came in to fix that and did a beautiful job.  Devin's workers are polite, professional and they clean up really well after each day to ensure that the place is dust free. Although he may have less reviews here on Angie's List, be sure to ask him for his many testimonials from many happy clients he has served. His workmanship is also top notch and he comes by on a daily basis while his team was working on our house, to ensure that all was going well. I would use Marvel Homes without hesitation for future projects and highly recommend him to anyone."

"This is a great company.  Dustin was very helpful and insightful as he came up with a design that we really liked.  Unfortunately we were unable to move forward with the project as our HOA rejected the design.   First Impression Hardscapes refunded our full deposit  without any issues.  We really like this company and we will definitely have them build our patio once we work out a solution with our HOA.

"My husband and I were first time home buyers and new only a little about the home remodeling process. I contacted many contractors for bids only two showed up. I was impressed by Leon at Home Breakthrough as he helped tell us what we could do to reach our goal of maximizing counter top and cabinet storage space and gave us some ideas. While I had thought Leon was the kitchen designer it turned out he was the salesman, so some of the things we had wanted to do that we thought were in the proposal turned out to not be realistic for the price we were quoted. We then had to meet with Fransisco who was the actual designer to re-discuss everything we thought we had settled with Leon. We had hoped our meeting with Fransisco would be to choose from samples of granite and cabinets to get moving on the design we had thought we had worked out with Leon ? this was not the case. While Fransisco was great about meeting us in the evening we had expected a quick meeting to look at samples and select counters and cabinets. Instead we spent two hours re explaining what we had discussed with Leon. We were told the breakfast bar with a built in bench would be too costly for staying in the budget we had wanted, so we conceded and gave up the bench to go with a traditional bar. It was our thought and was written in the final contract that this bar would have pull out trash and recycle barrels. However, at some point the dimensions for this bar cabinet were changed and the rollouts were no longer possible. Unfortunately, we did not realize this when looking at the drawings. It wasn?t until the cabinets were delivered and the counter top put on that I realized we did not get the size cabinet we had wanted. This was a huge disappointment to us as we had emphatically told Leon and Fransisco that we were ok having a large cabinet that would make the bar come out more into the living room (our living room is quite huge and we had expanded out part of the living room anyway to accommodate a kitchen table ? all of this was communicated to both Leon and Fransisco). Since it was written in the contract I did get rather upset and insist that a solution be figured out to at least give us a trash and recycle option. After a rather heated argument as to whose fault this was (mine for not catching it in the drawings, or his for not telling me and rewriting the contract) Fransisco did find a roll out trash and recycle option that would fit under our kitchen sink. To give him credit he purchased two roll outs (we used the second for dog food, the other fit both the recycle and the trash can) and did not charge us for them. While it did not solve the fact we were lacking a deep cabinet it did fulfil what was stated in our contract at no expense to us for materials. We did, however, have to purchase a pot and pan rack to hang from the ceiling and installation of this was not in the contract, but Fransisco did have it installed at no extra labor cost. To be honest we were very disappointed in the entire experience of the remodeling. It was extremely time consuming and both my husband and I work full-time and I?m also a part-time graduate student. Fransisco called us multiple times in the middle of our work day to ask questions about things we believed had already been settled (he did get better much later on and called us after our work hours). Towards the end we refused to answer calls and preferred to communicate with the office manager Anya via email (Anya was extremely well organized and helpful). My husband at Fransisco?s request took off work to meet with the counter top installers. We were told our presence was necessary either in person or via phone call and a computer at a later date to make decisions. However, it turned out that I had already made the decisions the granite installer was inquiring about when I went to the granite shop to select our stone and Fransisco knew about the decisions I had made because he was sitting next to me for the entire discussion. Fransisco was not present at the installation meeting with the granite company and it appeared he had passed off the task of communicating how we wanted the granite cut and installed to my husband who lost two hours of his work day. On the positive side, the workmanship appears to be great and our kitchen is beautiful. We did enjoy Carlos, who with one other guy did all of the work (minus the countertop installation ? the granite company did this). While Carlos did not speak much English he was always really polite, did excellent work and even helped us carry some of the items we had when were moving in to our condo (we had to move in to our new condo while they were still working because they were unable to start the project when we had hoped). There were some other missteps along the way (Fransisco had to come out to remeasure because he failed to measure the height of the cabinets, one set of cabinets ordered was incorrect, but they were able to get a new set and install them). I do think we paid too much for our small kitchen and since Home Breakthrough negotiates the prices with the materials on your behalf and makes a 20% markup for this added convenience they really have no incentive to ensure you receive the lowest price as well as best quality. They also charge this markup on their construction materials. We did buy many of the smaller things ourselves to avoid this 20% charge (we bought our faucet, garbage disposal, lights and other detail fixtures). In addition to the remedies of the rollout trash and the installation of the pot rack, we were credited some money on our final bill because of the miscommunication and challenges we had. I don?t know that I can say I would never work with this company again as it seems many contractors in this area are very unreliable, but I certainly would call around again to interview and get estimates from others on a home remodeling project. The craftsmanship was great, but the communication part was very time consuming and frustrating. If you choose this company I would certainly ensure that every decision you make is in writing, including all dimensions of cabinets and any other details that may seem small, but can lead to frustrations and miscommunication down the line, make a copy of your notes for Fransisco or send them electronically to Anya so that you have an accurate record of decisions."

"We originally contacted this provider to see if a Big Deal that he was offering via Angie's List would work for us. Decided not to purchase the Big Deal because we wanted more customization. We gave him a budget that we needed to stay within and he worked it out. We did end up going over the budget we had set for ourselves because we wanted more expensive tile and added carpeting to the list of updates that we wanted done. Still, the price was great for what we wanted done. Our neighbors have the same model house and master bath as we do and they paid about $3000.00 for just the bathroom alone. They also had to find the vendors and order the materials themselves. Steve has specific vendors that he uses for materials and seems to have a very good working relationship with them all. The vendor for the bathroom tile and flooring had a very large selection and range of prices as did the vendor for the countertops. Both offered good quality products. Steve always offered to meet me at the vendor and if he couldn't make it he would make sure the owner's knew that I was coming and what I needed. I really appreciated this because making all of the different choices for materials (tile, flooring, cabinets, bathroom fixtures, etc) was a little overwhelming. I also appreciated  that I was able to send a text at anytime with questions or changes and he always got back to me in a timely fashion. One thing I hate is not be able to communicate with contractors or not having phone calls returned.  I did not experience this with Steve. He even answered a couple of emails while he was at the beach on a short vacation with his family. Steve and his workers were very eager to make sure we were happy with everything. If I voiced any displeasure with anything he made certain to fix it to my satisfaction. He also has complete trust in the men who work for him. We were out of the country for a lot of the work. I was very apprehensive about this, but we came home and found most of the work done and everything intact. His men are also very clean. They would arrive promptly as scheduled and would have everything cleaned up and be gone by 5pm. I am extremely pleased with both the bathroom and the bedroom. My daughter is a Professional Engineer for Toll Brothers and was very impressed with the "high end" work done on our bathroom and bedroom.  I am already planning to have Chevy Chase Remodeling do another bathroom remodel in our home and also update our kitchen in the future. I know that Steve stands behind his work and I look forward to working with him in the future."

FAQs for countertop and backsplash service projects in Anacostia, DC

Butcher block countertops come in three main styles, each offering a unique look and function. Flat grain, also known as face grain, showcases the natural wood patterns, giving your kitchen a modern and elegant appearance. Edge grain is made from long, narrow wood strips, making it sturdy and providing a consistent grain pattern. End grain features a checkerboard pattern that is highly durable and perfect for heavy food preparation. Each style caters to different aesthetic preferences and usage needs, enhancing your kitchen's look and functionality.

With proper care, wood countertops can last anywhere from 20 to 100 years. To keep yours looking like new, clean up spills immediately and reseal the surface regularly—ideally once a month in the first year, then twice a year after that. Regular maintenance helps preserve the wood's beauty and durability for decades.

Wood countertops aren't hard to maintain if you keep up with regular care. Simply clean them with mild soap and water after use and reseal them monthly during the first year (then twice a year afterward). Using a food-grade oil or sealant protects the wood from damage. With a bit of routine maintenance, your countertop will stay beautiful and durable.

Wood countertops are sanitary with proper care and maintenance. By sealing them with a food-grade sealant and cleaning them regularly with mild soap and water, you create a barrier that prevents bacteria from getting into the wood. Always dry the surface thoroughly after cleaning to keep it hygienic and safe for food prep.

It's best to oil raw wood countertops once a month during the first year. After that, you can oil them twice yearly to keep them in good shape. If your countertop is professionally stained or sealed, you might not need to oil it as often. Regular oiling helps prevent drying and cracking, preserving the wood's natural beauty and durability.
