"Adrian is extremely knowledgeable and patient as he took the time to assess various points in my yard to give me options on how to fix my flooding patio (as it was raining outside). On the day of the French drain and French drain extension installation, the crew was prompt and immediately started the job. I was pleased with their professionalism as well and they worked very hard to excavate the dirt and install the French drain components. Upon completion of the amazing work, I observed the workers reassembling my yard and also cleaned up my driveway of any loose rocks. Adrian also came by shortly after the crew left to check on the job and again, I truly appreciate the level of professionalism from this company."

"Nick did a phenomenal job! He responded to my call & came to our house for a in person walk thru of the job. While on our property He noticed safety concerns with our septic drain field we were unaware of. His bid on the job was emailed in a timely manner & when the weather allowed He & his crew came out & knocked out the job, as well as, bringing our septic system to safety standards. I highly recommend him for your Excavation jobs. Truly Professional & Knowledgeable."

"The team was hired to remove a massive stump, dig out the remaining roots and level the backyard. They did an incredible job and covered the entire area with sod. Additionally, they were able to build a box underneath our deck and re-route our gutters to lead water away from the house. Their work looks amazing and I would happily hire them again. I have already referred them to neighbors and several family members who have upcoming projects."

"Great job! We had one company back out on us and when we inquired at Home Advisor Old Dominion came to the top. Within 15 minutes I had a proposal from Andrew, and after checking references we were set to go. The crew arrived on time, prepared to remove the tank, and like "magic" it was gone. They kept the area clean and neat. ODE did a marvelous job and I would recommend them."

"Ed Gray and Fauquier Excavation give excellent service! Ed gave me the best price of three quotes, showed up and worked fast with outstanding customer service. I hired him to prepare a site for an outbuilding and subcontract and manage concrete pours on a foundation. He and crew worked efficiently and did a great job. He graded the land as smooth as glass, the concrete work he sub'd was well managed and it turned out exactly as I had hoped. The final price was exactly quoted price. I wish he had cleared the land when my home was constructed, the lot would be much smoother. I wouldn't consider using anyone else after this experience."

"The problems were strange and required some investigation. The team first focused on the washer drainage. Eventually they used a camera inserted into the clearance pipe to check the drainage pipe from the house to the septic tank. They discovered a "dip" in the pipe, possibly resulting in an obstruction that might have caused the water to back up, kind of like a rock in a stream. (Admittedly, I may not describe this as clearly as I should...not a plumber!). Using shovels and an excavator, they dug about 5 feet into the ground between the house and the septic tank, ultimately discovering both the dip/weakening in the pipe and a 3" crack (almost half of the pipe) closer to the house. I feel like their work saved us much more money down the road, because without investigating/fixing the "dip" in the pipe, we would never have know about that crack. Without repair, it could would likely have begun leaking back into the foundation. The team was able to replace a 10' section of pipe, connect it to the septic, and confirm a steady drain of water. We have not had the backup or any drainage issues since. However, the smell didn't completely leave the laundry room. They came out again and, after a couple of smoke tests and cuts into the drywall, discovered a vent pipe that had in years past (we've owned the house for 5 years) simply been cut to move the washing machine hookups to the side wall (rather than the back). Although the smoke largely discharged through the roof vents as designed, this uncapped vent allowed septic odors to creep back into the washing room, particularly in the morning when the air outside was heavier. They were able to cap the pipe, and that removed the odor. We have not had any issues since they completed their work. The team was very responsive, and worked with me to reschedule the washing room work after a death in one of the worker's family...only slipped a single day. They also reduced the cost for disconnecting/moving the washer and dryer, since they didn't reconnect them (We were of course going to have to do get drywall repair/paint work after they finished). Although I am hoping to avoid any plumber issues for a while, I know who I will call if something comes up. Absolutely recommend this team."

Depth depends on the type of installation and the regulations in your area. Water supply lines typically require 24 inches, while drainage pipes are often installed 36 inches below grade. For most general projects, a depth of 12 to 24 inches and a width of about eight inches is sufficient. Sticking to these specs keeps your utilities safe, code-compliant, and easier to maintain later.
When you need to run utilities underground, you’ve got two main options: boring or trenching. Boring employs directional drilling to install utilities without exposing a continuous channel, while trenching requires excavating an open channel to place utilities securely. Directional drilling preserves landscape integrity, whereas trenching provides direct access for installation, albeit with greater surface disruption. This clear comparison helps you select the method best suited to your project.
Plan on 12 hours to dig 100 linear feet when the soil is cooperative and you can work continuously. This timeframe applies when work is performed consistently and methodically. Factors such as rocky soil, tree roots, obstructions, and frozen ground increase the overall duration, demanding extra planning and effort. Comprehensive operational planning ensures that every challenge is managed efficiently and the project is completed on schedule.
If you want your yard to look untouched, laying fresh sod over the trench is the quickest fix. New sod needs 30 to 45 days to root and blend with the rest of your lawn. A local sod pro can provide you with a firm timeline and tips to ensure the grass takes hold and maintains your curb appeal.
