"I am so pleased with Mr. Handyman of Richmond. They responded quickly to my message, we set an appointment by phone, and all went well. The serviceman evaluated the doors, brought the needed materials, and installed them professionally. Now our doors close more securely and I see no light coming in below or on the sides. And the value received was outstanding. I would definitely hire them again and highly recommend them to others. Thank you, Mr. Handyman of Richmond."

"Very professional. Work done in a timely manor. He went over and above to do the work as stated in the contract. As a result of his good work I will be using his company to do more needed work at my home. I would not hesitate to recommend his company to any friends, family or neighbors. He is thoughtful, courteous and respectful. I am so happy that I chose his company for my needs. Sorry I don’t have any photos of before and after the repairs were made."

"We are very pleased with the service we received from Good Neighbor Fencing. Bob Stewart was great to work with. He helped us select and design a fence that would work well in the space we planned to enclose. He also took notice of our dogs and suggested smaller spacing between the rails on the fence to be sure our smaller dog did not get out of the backyard once we had it fenced in. In addition to being very pleased with working with Bob, we were extremely happy with the installation that Vernon and Joe did. They were careful to ensure that the fence was installed properly and even went so far as to hand-dig the post holes so that they did not do any damage to our irrigation system and underground electric fence. All that said, my husband and I would recommend Good Neighbor Fencing without reservation."

"Wes had to replace an old hand cut wood door for us on our condo - the historic property management has done a terrible job keeping up the building. Our door no longer fit the frame and we had large cracks inbetween the door and the jamb. It was an absolute mess that the management company painted and resealed over again and again. Wes ripped out all of this existing work that was done improperly, fixed the moulding and frame to be square and hand cut our new door. Our a/c actually cools the room for the first time since we moved in! There is no light peaking through the frame and the room is much quieter now too. We're so happy - I would happily recommend Wes and his assistant again! Quality work on a tough project and they finished before dusk that day!"

"I recently moved in to a house with a partially finished attic.  Most of the mechanical was done correctly but when it came to finishing drywall etc I think a blind monkey that had to much coffee was let loose. I had done some patching taping and mudding but when it came time to get a finished look I was in over my head.
George showed up right on time for the estimate. We looked at my situation and as politely as he could he told me what needed to be done. Not wanting to tear everything out we came up with a good solution. Get the seams a straight as possible, smooth and correct the mistakes I had made. There were weird beams coming through the walls at a couple corners. I had metal edged them and did some mudding as best I could. Now they look like beams, nice.
The crew showed up Monday morning. He expected a couple guys and 5 showed. In a couple hours they were done. First coat of drywall mud and spackle  taped edged and pretty close to smooth.
Day 2 one guy came back to do the finish touchup and sanding. He did dry sanding instead of wet. There's a reason i mention this. Dry sanding in very dusty. With the work under their new work they felt this was best. a few hours and he was done.
Here was the only hiccup. A cleanup crew was supposed to show up later the second day. Miscommunication or whatever no one showed.  George did come by to check the work and when I told him no clean up crew had been there you should have seen his face. Shock and panic. We went up stairs checked the work that had been done and George was on his phone going down the driveway. 8 Am the next day George's number one guy was there and cleaned that 20 x 20 room for 4 hours. Wiped everything down and on his hands and knees vacuumed every inch of the floor to minimize any dust being tracked. Impressive
I think how you deal with a problem when it pops up shows how truly professional you are. I am writing this review from my new studio loft that George and his crews made happen.
Thanks for everything George, great work
Oh yeah I gave him a B on price but if you calculate the working man hours it was actually a fair price.

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Ashland, VA

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
