"We needed to pave an existing driveway of ~2700 SF. it was packed gravel, but every time we would get rain or snow, it became horribly muddy. George was very quick to respond to my request for an estimate, and worked with me to come up with the best solution for the driveway and some leveling and drainage work in the backyard. He turned around the estimate very quickly and came back out once more to evaluate the landscaping addition to project scope. George's price wasn't the cheapest we were quoted, but we felt he provided the best balance of quality, attention to detail and price. With a long-term investment of a driveway, I wasn't as interested in price, but more who I would trust to do the work and to be a partner in any future work. George fit both of those and I would highly recommend All American Paving to anyone looking for driveway work."

"DIO Construction did a great job on our project. They poured concrete steps, a patio with a large sidewalk, and an apron and sidewalk at the street. They also repaired some stone walls. A couple weeks later they came back and paved a 150 foot driveway that adjoined the new concrete. I showed Anthony a drawing of the concrete work we wanted and he made it just like the drawing, right down to the inch. The concrete work is excellent. I expect it to last much longer than we will. During the concrete work there was an unexpected complication. A specialist from outside their company was on the scene within an hour. The problem was resolved the following day with no delay to the project. Anthony recommended a different contractor for the railing for the new steps. That contractor was responsive, fair, and did a beautiful custom job. The day the old blacktop was removed, it was done in a nearly surgical manner. The new blacktop was put down in the same way. The team always showed up when they said they would and maintained good communication. Anthony was patient with all my questions and limited any inconveniences to the absolute minimum possible. Thank you very much!"

"I was very happy with the solution Alden came up with. I had spoken to another landscaping company and an engineer, and their solutions were not feasible. Alden's solution was both reasonable to carry out and effective. His solution had three parts: adding soil to change the grade so that water would run away from the house, adding an exterior drain pipe to catch the water and deposit it downhill from my house, and removing a brick flowerbed that was trapping the water so that it would not flow away from my house. The drain pipe was installed at ground level and just empties out onto the hill beneath my house. This was so simple I am surprised this did not occur either to me or anyone else. (I did not mind losing the flowerbed since I am not a gardener and honestly it just added another chore I was glad to be rid of.) Alden also noticed that my outdoor AC unit was about to topple over and added soil to level out the ground beneath the pad on which the AC rested. In general, I found Alden to be experienced in rain and groundwater management, creative in coming up with solutions, professional, and easygoing. His workers were nice and worked efficiently. And I am convinced that this is the best way for most homeowners to effectively waterproof their basement -- using soil grading and ground-level drain pipes to keep rainwater running along the ground away from the house; I think this is more effective and less intrusive than interior water proofing, and that the common method you see of digging to the foot of the foundation and installing the drain pipe there, then backfilling with gravel is unnecessary unless the water problem is that it is actually coming up from below ground rather than that it is running along the ground toward the house."

"Chris did a great job repointing the stone foundation and columns that needed maintenance on our house. He matched the existing ribbon style beautifully. He was easy to communicate with, flexible, and a nice guy. I’ve already recommended him to neighbors and plan on using him for another project."

"I had G&B Construction redo my concrete driveway and build a new concrete patio. I am very pleased with the whole process and with the way my new driveway and patio looks like! Geoge came out and gave me an estimate, sent me a written proposal and scheduled the job based on my own schedule. His team cleaned up very nicely and best of all - my kid got the chance to sit in a back hoe !!!! Would definitely use them again. "

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Blue Bell, PA

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
