"Our gravel driveway is 1/4 mile+ long and it was pot-holing really bad. We hired Rob and his crew to lay more 3/4â  TB and recycled asphalt over that. It was compacted, rolled, and turned out fantastic. Itâ  s as close to an actual asphalt driveway as you can get without spending a fortune. Rob is an outstanding communicator and you can tell with his suggestions and willingness to walk you through the process that he has an unmitigated passion for his business and what he does. Iâ  ve hired him twice now, and Iâ  ll do it again. Highly recommend."

"Our yard was completely torn up. We had removed some raised beds and we wanted to clear the space of overgrowth and have a simple patio area with lawn. It was like a jungle back there and the guys cleared it out in no time. They prepared the ground, laid a beautiful patio and sod. It was a pleasure working with Robb and his team"

"This company is the best contractor I have worked with on my yard. They gave us a specific window of when the work would be done and came in and did it all in two days. The work met or exceeded our expectations. When we had questions, Katie the office manager was very responsive and always answered our questions completely. Steve gave us great ideas on ways to accommodate our needs. The install team was a group of guys that worked non stop and were very professional. All in all I would highly recommend this compoany."

"Our granite countertop had chips around the sink from years of kid abuse.  I set up an appointment with Brian and he was able to meet with me the following day for an estimate.  Brian inspected all of the countertops, but the only area needing attention was the edging around the kitchen sink.  It The was pretty beat up and we discussed and decided to bevel the front edge and fill grind/fill chips along the side edge.  Brian explained the work, estimated the time at two hours and we set an appointment for two weeks out. <br /> Brain called the day before our appointment and arrived as expected the next morning.  He taped everything off, went to work and finished as planned, including clean-up, approximately two hours later.  Brian also cleaned up some calcification along the back edge of the sink.  The granite around the sink is back to it's original condition and I can't see or feel where he did his repairs.   <br /> Brian also explained the limitations of the fill material used for some of the chips and encouraged me to call if we had any issues in the future.   <br />   <br /> <br />"

"The crew was punctual, worked quickly, and completed the job and cleaned up our yard in approx. 2.5 hours. Although I had to wait about 6 weeks to get the job completed, I wasn’t in a huge rush. The head person on the crew walked the site with me before starting, explained what they planned to do and asked if I had any concerns and/or questions. I would recommend Hoppe to anyone and I will use them again. Although they were not the cheapest quote I received, they were a great value for the price. I received 5 quotes ranging from $560-1,300. Hoppe was $739."

"Looks good overall however, after about six months it started cracking. The stamping was okay, but you can see the broom marks in the pattern. They must have dropped the mold at one point because there is a mar in the surface. When Mark came out he said I should 'get over it' and that I should get a hobby, not look at the patio. ???? He said concrete cracks and I shouldn't be surprised. I am embarrassed by the quality and think he should be too. Finally, the patio isn't even and there are at least two places where the water pools instead of running off. Marcus is a very hard working man and I think a combination of being in a hurry and the fact that it had rained very hard the two days between the removal of the old patio and pouring the new one, the base of gravel had been compromised and parts had eroded."

"The whole project went really well. Penny was responsive and listened to what we wanted (a low-maintenence bed that would attract bees and butterflies and would bloom all summer). She suggested some less-common plants that we might like, drew up a design and installed the bed. She also dug up some old bricks bordering our brick patio and re-set them. She made the whole process easy, and the final result is great!"

"We are so happy we hired Dennis for our job! It started as a simple quote for removing some excess dirt we had, and he pointed out we "might as well put him to work while he's there". As a next step in our project, we also needed an area churned up/tilled. He showed up with a dump truck and his skid steer. Once he was done hauling the dirt away, he worked for about another half hour churning up the remaining area with his skid steer - he clearly has a lot of experience!! He was working the machine like it was an extension of his hands, went right up to our fence, landscaping rocks, and bushes, and never touched any of them. Very high quality and experienced work, definitely recommend him! We'll be hiring him again for our next project."

"We had an unground sprinkler system. JL Property worked with the company that maintains the sprinklers so repairs would be minimized and the sprinkler crew would have access to it, Brad and his crew are very professional and considerate. Prior to starting our job Brad came out to mark out the area and during our walk thru he gave us great ideas. During our entire job, they kept us up to date on the progress of the job. When I came home from work, they would walk me through the site, let me know what was going on, items that came up that may need to be addressed (sprinkler system) and how well the project was progressing. There were normally 4 to 5 guys at our home, always the same guys, which was reassuring. We were introduced to them the first day they started. At the end of every day they always cleaned up the yard so we didn't have to worry about. At the end of the project, Brad went over everything with us and any changes in the bill, he discussed with us in detail. Since they also take care of yards, I had asked for ideas for some other areas in our yard for vegetation and landscaping. They gave us some great ideas. We are very happy with the work JL Properties provided. We would definitely recommend them to anyone who is looking for a great job done with a great group of people. Thank you JL Properties. Matt and Ginny"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Milwaukee, WI

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
