"Late in 2019, my wife and I were presented with an opportunity to purchase a condo in NMB adjacent to a unit owned by my parents for 20 years. We had been in the unit previously and had pictures from a rental site available, so we felt good about this even though we had not been in the market to purchase a property. Because of the location we couldn't pass on it. Unfortunately, during the inspection we found that the condo had fallen into considerable disrepair. If we were to proceed with the purchase, we were looking at a total gut job (the kitchen, the bathrooms, the flooring, electrical...everything) and we had ZERO experience with such a project. We interviewed a couple of contractors that were referred by different sources, but we didn't have a good feeling about either. We were growing frustrated and, because we live 3 hours from NMB, we we were growing concerned about a renovation being done when we would have limited availability to assess the progress. So I turned to Angie's List and found Gary Stringer with On-Site Builders. I knew from our first meeting that we had found the right company (the right person) for the project. From the very first meeting, Gary provided an excellent client experience for us. He was very prompt in returning a detailed proposal and timeline for the project. We easily negotiated the payment schedule and agreed on a completion date that On-Site ultimately would meet. Once the work began, he was very proactive in updating us on the project and offered great insight when appropriate regarding adjustments to the original design plans. And the end product is fabulous! We have a fresh, modern "home" at the beach that is so much more than our considerable expectations at the onset of the project!"

"Our story begins almost a year ago with the Certificate of Occupancy on our new home. We were moving in from across the country ... from California to South Carolina. Upon seeing the finished product for the first time, the framing and the interior of the house was absolutely wonderful, reflecting all the expert craftsmanship expected on a custom build. The exterior painting, walkways, driveway, porch and patio looked like they were done by the worst of the tract home trade. The incessant spills and splatters were due to the lightning speed of work which is the hallmark of lack or prep and general carelessness of application. The general contractor tried to help as he could, explaining that subcontractor "must have an A and B team". The term "B team" was quite an understatement and a shock. Some things were fixed; others were beyond repair, would require starting over which we were not willing to pay for. Enter the Southern Shores Handyman (JR Grimm). He completed dozen or so small tasks remaining from the builder's punch list, some of which had to wait until now for the pressure-treated lumber to age (i.e. that kind of wood does not take dark colors until 6 to 8 months after installation). JR had the patience to stay with the effort and overcome any unforeseen obstacles to get the results that he sought. He cleaned up the subcontractor's messes and then some ... left the porch and inside of the garage in better shape than we thought possible. Exit JR, leaving behind another very satisfied customer."

"Excellent. Darryl came out to view the work to be done and gave me a free estimate of the time and cost to do the work. He explained what needed to be done and gave me the option of providing the material for him to install. Darryl arrived on time and I was impressed how organized he was. He replaced the rotted frame and lattice with materials I provided. He kept the worksite clean and organized throughout the job. I would recommend Darryl without hesitation."

"They did a really good job on our roof. They did the job in a timely manner and it looks really good. There was an incident with them breaking a piece off my gate, but they replaced it with no problems."

"The job is perfect. I had some concern about using the vinyl shutters that we purchased online. (afraid that high winds might cause damage as the shutter was not finished on both sides and therefore fairly lightweight) My fears were unfounded as the shutters were installed with six screws per shutter and anchors were used in our masonry to keep them in place. They look beautiful and we are more than pleased with the results. We are now waiting on an estimate for painting the exterior of out house from this company, and will most likely use them in the future to complete this project. We bought a home in the historic section of Conway. It was built in 1947. We have a few projects coming up but we love this home."

"I sent Mr. Masters an email on the 19th of December and he responded the following day.  He told me he was extremely busy but since it was such a small job he could work me into his schedule.  I told him that I wouldn't be at the house(this is a second home) until the following Friday and he said he would be there at that time.  He asked if we had the materials and I told him that I thought we did but I wasn't sure if we had the correct ones so when he was on his way to another job, he stopped by to check the materials.  I didn't have the correct stuff so he exchanged our purchase on his way back to our house after he completed the other scheduled job.  He had to climb up into our attic to reinforce the porch, provided the materials for that and then had to correct the chain on the swing as it wasn't hanging even.  Then only charged us $45.00 - $5 was for reimbursement of materials purchased.  WHAT A DEAL!!!!  He was extremely helpful and very pleasant to work with.  I will call him again for any and all repair work that we need done.  He stays extremely busy but I'll be glad to wait until he can work us into his schedule. <br />"

FAQs for shed, barn or playhouse repair projects in Calabash, NC

You’ll know it’s time for a new shed roof if shingles curl or buckle, soft spots sag, or water stains appear inside. Moss or other plant growth on the surface is another red flag that moisture has breached the roofing layers. Replacing the roof quickly stops leaks from spreading, protects stored items, and saves you from costlier structural repairs down the road.

Choosing between a flat and a sloped shed roof comes down to climate, budget, and upkeep. A flat roof is cheaper up front, but still needs a slight pitch for drainage. A sloped roof sheds rain and snow more easily, lasts longer, and often needs less maintenance. Weigh your local weather patterns, the look you want, and how much time you’re willing to spend on upkeep before deciding.

A shed roof’s life span hinges on the material you choose and how well you maintain it. Most standard products last 15 to 30 years, while premium picks like slate or clay tile can protect the structure for 50 to 100 years. Regular inspections, fast fixes, and routine cleaning all help you reach the upper end of those ranges and keep your tools and gear dry year-round.
