"I bid approximately 10 different people across three categories: landscapers, contractors and masons. The landscapers were stumped given it was structural and it was graduated (grew from small to tall). The contractors were very matter of fact as were most of the masons; demo it and build it with this one brick style that they were accustomed to using. Scott came out and was very self-assured as to how he was going to tackle the project and he explained how he was going to do it and why. Prior to this however, on the phone, he sent us to his website to check out all the retaining walls he had previously done, both structural and more for esthetic purposes (my words) I will say. After he explained his approach, he then got out his brick catalog and gave us a couple of options then he would recommend. Then, he saw that we had a large tree nearby and recommended that perhaps we might want to go with a smooth vs. textured stone so that all the sap and other tree droppings wouldn't cling to the brick. This is the type of attention to detail that Scott brings to the project. He was right on budget, his team was very pleasant and very nice, and they were very clean when they were done. I would use them again in a minute. I am not sure that there isn't anything with stone that Scott hasn't done. <br />"

"Chris & his crew arrived on time, they had to remove the existing tree, plant the new tree and create a stone tree well around the nw tree.  It turned out just like we wanted.  They also installed some small shrubs for us to improve the overall appearance of our backyard.  We love it and get compliments on it all the time. <br /> Previous to doing this work for us, Chris & his team installed a paved patio and sidewalk in our backyard that we love.  That's why we knew we needed to go to him when we had this job come up.   <br /> We highly recommend this company for anyone who needs pavers, stone work or landscaping done.  They are reliable and do beautiful work! <br />"

"Went well.  There was some damage to the existing asphalt that I had planned on leaving so the apron had to be enlarged.  Price of the extra work was split.  Had to remind them to pack the sidewalk area, but when I did they got right on it. They did me a "favor" of leaving a bunch of class 5 for paver base which turned out to be way too gravely so I had to remove it, but I consider that my fault as I didn't look at what they were offering me. <br /> <br /> Update:  Over the winter the new concrete heaved causing there to be standing water in the garage which froze the garage door shut, caused some cracking, etc. Now I also see degradation of the asphalt where the two join together so I'll probably have to replace that in the future. I tried to contact Final Grade about the heaving last winter and got no response so I sent an email.  Never heard from them.  I doubt there is a solution at this point, but I wish I had never had the work done."

"Walter and Justin did an excellent job first of all of protecting our roof and lawn with padding during the entire procedure Pieces of the brick had been flaking off due to moisture. Our chimney is made of the soft pink brick that I have heard referred to as Chicago brick. Walter went to a brick yard and hand picked brick that he thought would match ours, which it did beautifully. He did an excellent job of interspersing the brick they had been able to salvage from the tear down with the new brick, with the end result being that one cannot tell where the repair began. Our chimney also had a bit of a detail with an occasional brick jutting out from the others, and they replicated that as well. Walter suggested that because our brick was so soft, we have them install a limestone crown where there had previously been none. We followed his advice, and I am very glad that we did. It looks great! <br /> Walter and Justin were wonderful to work with. They were responsive and nice and cleaned up beautifully afterward.. <hr /> <br />"

"Arabella Stone did excellent work. It is absolutely beautiful! They completely rebuilt sections as needed, and replaced nearly all the mortar on the outside of the house. It is now solid and looks wonderful. They also cleaned up the limestone wall in a bathroom basement. We love how it turned out. We would highly recommend Arabella. It was clear when we met Daniel how much he loves working with stone. He is a true craftsman."

"I had an excellent experience with them.  Even though my husband was in the hospital for a heart attack, they came out and blew up the lines and took care of everything.  The really do a good job.  We have been using them for three or four years.  We highly recommend them.  They follow up and they communicate well.  They contact us in the spring and set up a date when they will come out.  Then they contact you on the phone and come out and blow up all the lines.   <br /> <br /> I don’t know the exact cost because it is my husband who pays them but I believe it is realistic.    "

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Cambridge, MN

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
