Torsten Hansen has the patience of a saint.  As I was considering my options with other companies, I bombarded him with a multitude of questions which he answered thoroughly and in a timely manner.

His price was the best.

I have one complaint.  I have a bedroom above an unheated garage.  We removed the old drywall and fiberglass insulation which was riddled with squirrel mess.  We also added air conditioning to the house.  There are heating/air conditioning ducts running at the side of one garage wall and across 3 areas of the garage ceiling. The HVAC contractor said to make sure those were well insulated or humid air would condense on the ducts and damage the new drywall.  I thought that foam would be the best option.

Pure Seal did a really good job of insulating the side vents with high density foam. I had the ceilings and walls done in medium density foam.  But, they left the bottom halves of the ducts across the ceiling unfoamed.  In all but a few spots there was a good 2 inches or more space from the bottom of the vent to the end of the joist.  I measured it . Torsten went out and looked at it from the ground and said there was nothing they could do.  He said if I was worried about condensing water dripping onto the underside of the drywall when the air was on, I could staple some plastic over the areas.  Not a good solution.

I tried to foam the vents myself with Great Stuff, but it would not stick to the horizontal surface of the ceiling ducts.  It kept falling off.  So I wound up ripping the vapor barrier off of some fiberglass insulation and tapping it up in the cavity below the ceiling vents.  I then covered the fiberglass with reflectix stapled to the joists.  I told Torsten what I did and he thanked me for taking care of it but stuck by his decision that they could not have done anything.

I was disappointed because this was one of the main reasons I wanted foam.

They also cut a wire in trimming the foam but he did offer to pay to fix that. My electrician was doing something else for us so he did not charge us.  That kind of stuff happens and I would not fault him for that but they should have caught it when they inspected their job instead of me having to tell them about it.

"Noel insulated our house 5 years ago. Last year I had lots of snow melting on the house which caused large icicles and eventually an ice d*** with water intrusion into our house through the dormer. I had 2 companies look at the problem and both concluded that the problem was caused by air leakage (or bypass) into the dormer. It had been insulated, but not air sealed from the warm air coming into the space. Apparently A&J was not aware of the importance to air seal BEFORE insulating as this was never done nor suggested. Both of these contractors explained they NEVER insulate without air sealing first and that doing it after the fact is far more difficult and time consuming. They took time to educate me about the process, something this vendor did nit do. There are wires, cables, a chimney and a heat duct going thru the dormer, none of which were sealed. They both also indicated that the insulation in the attic was dusty and dirty indicating attic bypass there as well. People understand a lack of insulation, but attic bypasses are generally less understood, and much more time consuming to correct. An attic bypass is a passageway for heated air to rise in to the attic ? insulation won?t fix this. So A&J either did not know about the importance of air sealing or chose not to properly air seal - either way, that results in a lousy job and resulted in water damage to our house. To correct the problem we will have to have the insulation put aside and then air sealed, a costly job! In the meantime, we are just knocking down the icicles in the hopes the same issue doesn't happen this year. I wished i had known that melting snow or icicles at the edge of your attic roof are indicators of a poor job air sealing. So buyer beware! I did not give this vendor a lower grade as there were areas done properly like the attic coffin, but i would obviously not recommend them to anyone.

"Can't say enough about this company. Price was more than fair, they showed up exactly when they said they would, and the whole job was done in six hours. John took pictures of every sheet of plywood that he had to replace, and made sure he explained everything he did - both before and after. Came in under the max budget he had quoted us, and the roof looks beautiful. They just finished today, so I can't say for certain that it is watertight, but I can tell by looking at it and the way it was done that it is going to be. I'm thrilled with everything."

"One of the owners came out with samples of the windows to show me what options I had.   He was very knowledgable and professional.   The only complaint I have is that they didn't mention when they replace the outdoor window screens that they don't replace with a full screen unless you ask.    So when my windows were done I was surprised to find I only had half screens.   The other thing is that they don't mention that the installers are subcontractors and not employees of the company.   Despite these two things the man was friendly and professional.
The day they came to install the windows was when I found out that the installers were subcontractors and that no one from the company would be there that day.  This has taught me a lesson to specifically ask that questions of anyone that I hire in the future.  They could not answer my questions about the half screens saying that I needed to follow up with the company.   One of the windows size was not ordered correctly so I was told it would have to be ordered and would take a few weeks.  This was after the old window had been taken out.   Most of the windows were installed well.  But a couple of them had knocked off plaster on the inside.   I was told that they wouldn't fix this, that I would have to fix it myself or hire someone to fix it.   So I had these chunks out of the sides of my windows inside the house.  The caulking was very sloppily put on at the last minute.   Later when opening and closing the windows I found that one of them wouldn't close properly.   I called and they said that I would have to push down hard to close until the window wore itself in.
I asked about the screen when I finally talked to the owners again.  He said that I would have had to specify at the time of the initial visit if I wanted full screens or not.    He said to do it now it would be an extra expense since they half screens were already installed.   I would have specified if he would have mentioned that they were only doing half screens at the visit and or on my order paperwork.    The screens fall out of the track every time I move them.
Overall I would say that these issues could have been prevented and were just sloppy work of the contractors and overlooked by the company as long as they were paid.  When I pay someone to replace windows I expect them to be replaced and leave the structure as they found it.   To damage and leave chunks of wall missing and expect the customer to handle it is not professional.  Especially when I am sure that causing chunks when pulling out the old window is very common.
I would never use this company again.

"The work was completed swiftly and with exceptional attention to detail. Jaime replaced the section of rotted board and checked the structure underneath it to make sure there wasn't more damage. He then covered the entire board beneath our door with composite wood to protect it from water dripping from our roof overhang. On the second job he installed white vynil soffit panels under the window overhang after capping and sealing the overhang. He took great care to run our TV/internet cable in inside the j-channel trim so that it is no longer hanging down and accessible to critters nibbling on it. Jaime is someone who is knowledgeable, honest and sharing. He quickly answered questions we might have had about the projects and anything else that might be on our minds regarding our home. We would not hesitate to recommend his services to anyone and when we need his services againwe will absolutely call him."
