"After having a contractor walk out on me without finishing the job I dealt with this hideous stair case. That was up until I met Phillip! I found him on Angi & within just a few days he was able to come and evaluate the work that I needed. Not only on the stair case but other unfinished project in just 2 days he completely flipped my home. Mounted my TV, installed new baseboard and trim, finished my flooring (also redoing the questionable DIY areas I did myself) and gave me this beautiful stairs case. Not only did he pick up the supplies for me but also stained and painted it all. He is meticulous in his work and takes pride in each project he does. Truly a great person and handy man to keep around. He is both trustworthy and reliable. Needless to say I will be calling Phillip for all future projects. Thanks so much again."

"My husband and I hired Luis Landscaping to remove an old deck (which turned out to be a larger job than thought) and replace it with a paver patio. Luis Landscaping was dependable and very well priced. Luis is very knowledgeable and answered any questions or concerns we had. I would recommend Luis Landscaping for anyone looking for honest quotes and great work. (I've already recommended them to a close friend) We will definitely use them on future jobs we may have."

"Really Great work. He made his work look very professional. Only thing is he doesn’t caulk his work. He did make a nice wood frame for dishwasher to slide in, but he forgot to Measure the depth of the dishwasher from the wall out. The plumber had to cut out the back of the frame off when installing the dishwasher, so it could fit. No biggie . Very very Nice guy, I would highly recommend."

"I engaged EB to install laminate floors. He was extremely professional and worked very hard to create a perfect product. There were several challenging areas to fit on the floor and he used his creative skills to make it work. His quote was fair; he was personable and I absolutely love the floors. I would recommend EB to anyone no matter how large or small the job. He is an artist and a master of his craft."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Downingtown, PA

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
