"The job was clearing out a 300 sq foot area of tree roots, prepping area for new driveway, and laying down new asphalt. The job with Dennis started out great. He worked very hard. When it came time to get asphalt for the driveway, the shop just had 1 variety that day. When he arrived at my house with the asphalt, he was visibly upset about the grade that they had available. He made the decision to get a grade that has rocks in it that are from .5"-1" size rocks. Definitely not a finer grade which is more acceptable for residential driveways. When he was done, he was still visibly upset about the results and even thanked me for not being irate with him. He was hiring a third party to come in and lay mastik to fill the gaps, and level the surface, then seal the entire driveway. I appreciated his hard work and believed he was taking care of the job, so I paid him since I felt he was a man of his word. I even gave him a $600+ tip. The mastik/sealing company came out the next day and only used mastik on 25% of the 300 sq feet. A few days after it was fully dry, I texted Dennis and expressed my concern that the gaps were not filled and the surface was not at all level. He agreed to have the sealing company come out again. I specifically asked Dennis if they were using mastik as another coating of seal would not fill the gaps. He ignored my question and a second layer of seal was applied. I texted Dennis after the weekend asking him to get back to me. I did not hear back from him. I texted the next day expressing my concern that the gaps were still not filled and that now, there were streaks from the second application of the driveway being sealed. I included photos and asked him to please get back to me. He said that the work was "not that bad" and he "did what was on the estimate". "If the work is unsatisfactory, then I recommend going with another company" I paid Dennis for his hard work and what I thought was his honest word about finishing my driveway. Definitely my fault for believing him at his word. Dennis was dishonest with me on many occasions. He said that mastik would be used to fill gaps and level the surface. That did not happen. When I repeatedly brought up the grade of asphalt that he chose without talking to me, he said "asphalt is aphalt" that there is no difference in grade. Dennis told me that he would come out and look at my driveway again, but he never did. Dennis claimed that he sent the company out to seal my driveway 3 times and it was twice. I know that this repair would not match my existing driveway, but asphalt that was a much more appropriate grade could have and should have been used. I will have to hire another company to rip out and redo what Dennis refused to complete as he told me. I'm sure most of the time Dennis has done great work. Unfortunately that was not my experience. I thought he was a man of his word, but his dishonesty and bad decisions have left me with an unacceptable end result."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in East Wenatchee, WA

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
