"I can?t imagine how everyone here is saying that they listen. This was absolutely to our experience. On any given day we never knew who was going to show up and what work was being done even thought we multiple times said that the bathroom was the priority they kept working on the secondary project which was our basement. They damaged our sink counter top, screwed right through the bathroom wall and into our living room and stained the floor with completely mismatched stain. I would. It recommend for renovation work. They also left behind a large pile of debris we had to dispose of."

"My first impression was Ben arriving to meet us for the first time, EXACTLY on time and with his dog in tow.  I knew immediately it was going to be a good fit.  Throughout the duration of the renovations (a few months) he kept in contact with us and kept us apprised of his progress.  We are located over 2 hours away, so we were not able to monitor things as he went along.   <br /> We made a few minor adjustments to our initial plan, which he accommodated graciously.   <br /> In the end, the work done was spectacular, on budget and on time.  I would absolutely recommend Ben at Wooden Hammer to anyone looking to have work done. <br />"

"This is our second time using Lakewood. They did a first floor remodel last year. This job went just as well as the first. Bob, Jim, Dave and Grant are great to work with and have in your house. They clean up at the end of each day, and make sure things were done right. The project was completed in the 2 month time frame we were given, actually almost 2 weeks ahead of schedule. <br /> Bob's quote was right on, and he gave us multiple options on flooring, staircase and shower materials. We were kept up to date with weekly emails to let us know what was coming up the next week, what choices we needed to make, and gave us plenty of notice to move from one part of the upstairs to the other. They did all the heavy lifting and moved most of the things themselves. The order of the project changed as items were available early, or needed to be rescheduled, and it was always a smooth transition. <br /> Any issues/questions that came up were discussed and we were given multiple options/recommendations to choose from. We had a non-standard size vanity in the master bath, and were having trouble finding a good match for what we wanted. Bob made custom vanities for both of our bathrooms so we could get exactly what we wanted. They came out great! <br /> Anything that was incorrect or wasn't up to their standards was rectified. Any questions we had were answered quickly, any changes we wanted were met with enthusiasm and with options as to how we wanted them accomplished. <br /> They also worked with a plumber we had contracted with to put in a ductless air system, so it could all be done at the same time. <br /> Dave also has a mirror business and did a great job fixing an old family mirror we have.  A much needed improvement. <br /> There are still a couple more smaller projects that we would like to do, and we will definitely be using them again. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Essex Junction, VT

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
