"Ellisons Home Improvements came in to repair a disastrous deck job by another (not Angi) builder, who failed us completely. Ellisons was fair priced; maintained excellent communication throughout the work for us; and did exactly what he agreed to do and then some. I say “and then some” because Rhett Ellison has a feel and gift for woodworking. He is an artist as much as a laborer. He brings experience and pure talent to a project. My only regret? I didn’t START with Ellison’s Home Improvements. But I will be using EHI to wrap up any additional work that needs completing in the future. Ellisons is the real deal: Gifted, conscientious, and there when you need him."

"First of all, it took over a month to get the job done, when I was told it would be done in 2-3 days, and it on top of that it is incomplete.  I had been quoted and paid for replacement of bathroom vanity countertop & mirror & replacement of a piece of base board which has not been done as of this time, because they left without it being done.  On top of that, they left the work area a mess.  I will have to hire another contractor to come and finish the job I have already paid this company for if it is not corrected."

"Jimmy and his crew cleaned the gutters and pressure washed my two-story 2500 ft house for $350. Jimmy's estimate was compatible, but I hired him because of his cheerful personality. They showed on time and worked efficiently until the job was done. In addition, they offered to do and did a few extra things, such as patching a few holes in the siding. I asked if they will pressure wash the deck and they did. That was a separate job. Great team, great job, great pricing. I highly recommend them and will definitely hire them again. "

"It didn't go well and they ended up taking three months to finish it. They were first going to put it up with rotten boards that had bugs crawling in them and stuff. This was what he was going to build it with and he also put in the wrong posts. We wanted 6x6 posts because it was a horse shed and he put 4x4 posts in. I had already paid him half the money and then he said that he wasn't going to replace it because they were already there. He was not going to finish it and was still going to take half of the money because we had the wood. He was going to keep the wood there, which was rotten. My husband went to work and did a blueprint of exactly what we wanted so he could look at it step by step on what to do, but we went round and round with him. He did a good job once it all came around and he actually did it, but it took a couple of months. He didn't work on it himself and had other people come who were doing things wrong."

"There were 3 guys doing the drywalling and one of them was not nearly as good as the others so there were spots that were very visible. Their price was excellent but I don't think I'll use them again because of the quality. They were good with responsiveness. I'll probably go with someone else if I had to do a similar project just because the quality of the drywall wasn't what I like."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Etowah, TN

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
