"The entire experience with Patrick Davidson and Apex Roofing was the best it could possibly have been. We were pleased with every interaction we had, whether by phone, e-mail, text or in person. Patrick's price was competitive, the quality of work outstanding and the conduct of his crew was commendable. A big shout-out to Sergio and Patrick's son (Jared?) who provided on-site leadership. Clean up was extraordinary as well. Also, Sergio had to come back to install some gable vents since there was a delay in the supply chain. "Where honesty and integrity is paramount" is their motto and they lived up to it. Go with this company, you'll be glad you did."

"I am really happy with the work Richards Roofing has done. Out of 7 quotes, Richards Roofing had the best price. The crew was professional and friendly. Besides the new roof which required a tear-off, I wanted attic insulation. I asked them to do the attic insulation by going through the roof, as to not track fiberglass through the house - no problem. They quoted 12" of blown-in fiberglass; the others quoted 8 to 10". They started within a week after I contracted them. Mine is a ranch of 2900 square feet, yet they did the work in 2 days including the tear-off, attic insulation and clean-up. They cleaned up well, and even put back my gutter leaf guards. They allotted 10 plywood sheets in the price quote. They used only 4, so they refunded the cost of the unused sheets, so I was charged less than the quote. In my experience when I have had a roof replaced, the chimney leaked during the first big rain. Here we've had several big rains, snow, sleet, and high winds in the year since they installed my roof and I have had no leaks or other problems. I've recommended Richards Roofing to my friends and co-workers and would definitely hire them again."

"Met with Chad at my home, he was awesome and very professional! Chad was very detailed about all the steps it would take to replace my roof, I honestly felt at ease with him. I was not pressured in any way to go with their company, He assured me if there were any concerns they would quickly resolved those issues and they did. He was very patient, If I had any questions no matter how many he would answer them. I then met my project manager Brian he was awesome as well! If there were any questions or concerns he would answere them with no problem, if there was any problems he would have them resolved quickly. I loved the fact they are really sincere, after signing the contract some companies tend to ignore you and your concerns not Extreme Exteriors they were very professional and stuck to their word. Thank you guys for that! Extreme Exteriors sent their best team to install the roof [ who were awesome!] for my home and garage and my beautiful roof was done in a day. They cleaned up and anything that was not right they corrected. Yes I highly recommend them! I just referred them to several friends and family. Rachel"

"We got 4 different quotes, and selected Mike's due to the major quality difference.  He was very prompt on initial contact; in fact, he came out the very day we called.  He did a very detailed explanation of his products, and answered all the questions we had.  Upon our agreeing to the purchase, the install was scheduled and started precisely on time.  The installation was excellent, and we love the new windows.  We would absolutely recommend this company to anyone!"

"I originally scheduled an inspection well over one year ago. I cancelled - twice! - and asked for a call back this spring. I received a call from the office in March and scheduled again. During every call I was treated professionally and kindly. I scheduled the work with Greg. I then, again, postponed. Two weeks later, the workers were finally able to come. I was called one hour before the scheduled arrival so I knew when they would get to my home. The first job was to remove all the old fiberglass insulation. This not a job I wish on anyone. I have an addition on the home with a cedar ceiling and walls. Over that room a solid layer of foam was added plus, throughout the entire ceiling, any place where joists or walls connected was foamed. Thirteen light cans were housed and foamed. Two vents were repaired and three were foamed. The two large skylights in the ceiling (a standard eight foot ceiling) had their walls foamed. When doing the foaming portion, they found electrical boxes not attached and some without covers. These were repaired. At some point, a wire came loose and I lost the lights in the addition. They traced it and fixed that. The next day, cellulose was blown in to give the ceiling a R-49 insulation rating. As a bonus, part of the fiberglass that was removed was placed over the garage space, something they did not have to do. The addition had special issues as the house brick wall was not completely removed. Between that, the wood walls and ceiling, and one wall butting up to the garage, the room had a convection issue that caused it to always be cold in winter and hot in the summer. The non insulated crawlspace increased the effect. By foaming the areas in the attic where air could infiltrate the wall cavities, the fix was started. Under the addition, the crawlspace has a short - about 2 foot tall ceiling. All the insulation was removed, and the duct insulation checked and repaired as needed. The floor was had a thick vapor barrier and sheet insulation added. All the walls were foamed. They even add insulation to the entry cover and added attachments so it is easier to remove if needed. At all times, the crew was friendly and professional. I was extremely anxious during the first day as I have had some nightmare contractors over the years. The guys took it all in stride and treated me with respect and consideration. After all the work was done, Greg came back a few days later and performed another blower test. He filled out the rebates, I signed them and he submitted them. To be honest, I was uncomfortable one time during the process. The man doing the foam asked to walk the inside of the house so he would not exactly where the walls and lights were. This was an extra step to help him navigate the beams. I didn't expect anyone inside the house and would have made my bed. ;) I would hire this company again in a heartbeat. $6,000.00 is a lot of money and the company's attention to customer service, excellent training, and hard workers made it much less stressful to pay the bill."

"We are very pleased with the job Roofman did on our home. In one day they tore off old roof and replaced it. They were promt, personable and professional. They were careful not to damage our gardens and lawn. Every bit of debris was cleaned up at the end of the day. We are extremely satisfied with our new roof. We have had several neighbors favorably comment on it as well. We love our updated sunroom - no more leaky skylights! We highly recommend Roofman (855-976-6362) for your next roofing project."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Farmington Hills, MI

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
