"Ruben and his team were extremely courteous, hard-working and reliable. They did three projects for us in a 1980-build SFH house we just purchased in Vienna, VA. One was a complete remodel of our Master Bathroom on the 2nd Floor. The second was a remodel of the old brick & brass fireplace in the family room, and finally the creation of a new room-wide step down between the kitchen and the family room giving the entire area an open appearance. The bathroom was originally an 80's style monstrosity with green marble, shiny brass fixtures and a huge black jacuzzi - we changed that to a clean look with grey slate, some moroccan tiling in the shower area and a white soaking tub. The fireplace was re-faced with stacked stone to the ceiling, creating space for shelving and a TV mounting area in the middle. Looks great now and is highly functional. The step just ties the two rooms together for a clean uncluttered look. Ruben is a very friendly person and a great listener who puts his clients interests first. He discussed the projects in detail with me and offered his suggestions when asked. He takes a personal interest in making sure things are done in the right way and communicates regularly with his customer. He is also very knolwedgeable about his trade-craft. At the end he also repainted the hallway, stairwell and the room walls to have a nice finish. My wife and I are very happy about the end-result, we have a lovely home. The only thing I wished is if the project had been concluded a bit earlier on time, but I know that the vast vast majority of projects go over the schedule. "I'll start with the TLDR blurb: Gary, Junior, Kenny and Clint from Two by Four did a fantastic job on my basement. I'm very happy with their professionalism, workmanship, and candor.  <br /> Now for the long version. We recently moved into a new house which has a finished basement. The problem was that there was a weird shaped room with no windows, no air registers and electrical receptacles high on the wall as if a countertop used to be there. In short, we wanted this room removed and the basement to have a completely open concept. After contacting multiple contractors about the work and getting bids, I happened to find the Angie's List Big Deal advertising 35 hours of general contractor work for $1500 by Two by Four ("2x4") Construction. Great deal, so I purchased it.  <br /> After some back and forth with Gary, the owner, we found a mutually agreeable day for him to come and look at the job. We walked through the basement, talked about what I wanted done, and he understood exactly what I wanted, We even talked about a support column in the room that might contain plumbing which would make installing a sink easier in the future. (Something my wife and I are certainly interested in doing somewhere down the line.) After everything was gone over Gary explained that the job would most likely take longer than 35 man-hours to complete and electrical work was charged on a per hour basis because you just can't tell what's behind the walls until you take them down. Considering two guys at 9 hours a day comes to 18 man-hours, the 35 hours from the deal would go pretty fast. Gary provided an estimate of what it would cost for the work, not including the electrical, and we decided that we would just subtract the $1500 already paid from whatever the end cost ended up being. <br /> On the day work was scheduled to begin, Junior (Gary's son) and Clint showed up early and was ready to roll. I went over the details of the job with both of them to make sure we were on the same page. Junior wasn't sure any electrical work would be done the first day so we didn't discuss that too much. After that, they started working immediately. About 11:30am that morning I got a call from Kenny who was doing the electrical work to ask a few questions on the location for the pendant lights and where to relocate the switches. I had everything pre-measured and drawn out for him so it was easy to know where everything went. He also explained that the wiring in our basement was a mess and gave me several options to fix it. We decided to create an access panel in the ceiling and he fixed the wiring and brought everything up to code. On the advice of Gary, I purchased additional laminate to fix the holes in the floor where the walls were removed. Turns out the stuff I bought was too thick to match what was already there. 2x4 went to Home Depot and purchased the right stuff (and even matched it much better than I did to what was already there!) and fixed it all up. The stuff they bought was even cheaper than the stuff I got! After the first day, much to my surprise, the work looked at least 75% finished. <br /> On the second day, Kenny and Clint came to finish up the electrical and the drywall guy came to start patching everything up. Kenny called me around 3:00pm and informed me that the 35 hours would end at 4pm. At that time they would pack up and leave. He said that there was still some drywall work that needed to be finished but it was my call on whether to have the guy come back on Wednesday to finish it up. He explained what needed to be finished, how long it would take and how much extra it would cost. He was completely up-front about everything and I really appreciated that. We went ahead and scheduled the drywall guy to come and finish everything on Wednesday.  <br /> On Wednesday, Kenny texted me when the drywall guy was finished and asked when he could come by that afternoon or on Thursday to do a final walk-through and pick up some equipment that was left in the basement. He came over at 7am on Thursday morning. All of the work was great. Kenny even gave me some tips on painting the ceiling and walls. The only minor negative about the whole job was finding left over materials and trash left on my back patio. It took all of 5 minutes to bag up and put out with the rest of the trash so not a big deal. <br />"

"Mike and his crew renovated our basement bathroom and laundry room in 2015. They built a full bathroom including brand new plumbing and a new laundry room. Their work in the basement was beautiful, came in at budget, and stood the test of time, so we had them back for our kitchen and upstairs bathroom in early 2019 to finish all of the major renovations in our 1952 townhouse. Communication with Mike and Davis was great, we always knew what to expect which was crucial for such a large project. Their crew is respectful, taking off their shoes and sweeping up everyday, covering furniture, etc. They are proud of their work and it shows. We love our new kitchen and bathroom! "Matt yusufhanoglu and his company Living colors did a phenomenal job in restoring my 1958 ranch house into a gem. The house was empty and in terrible condition on the inside. With the help of his architect Matt was able to present me with multiple choices based on the open floor plan that I wanted in the main living area. This included tearing down an attached room and building a beautiful sunlit addition that extended the kitchen area and added a sun room. Matt and his site lead Carlos also creatively found space to add a full second bathroom to make the house an efficient 3 bedroom, 2 bath house. I can’t say enough about the quality of the work and the amazing interior design selections such as cabinets, windows, flooring and associated hardware that made this house my dream come true."

"This was definitely a 5 star operation from the initial discussions to the finishing touches! For a major renovation and upgrade to our master bathroom we reviewed potential contractors and their customer comments. VKB stood out. Our VKB designer Sean clearly has artistic talent and lots of design experience. He patiently worked with us, showing us 3D design options as we considered alternative configurations and materials. When we were satisfied with the design, Sean transitioned us smoothly to the build phase, introducing Jason as our project manager and Walter as our crew chief. Sean personally familiarized Jason with the project, inviting us to share our thoughts and any concerns. During the renovation, Walter and his crew would carefully isolate the MBR work from the rest of the house, sealing off the room and path to the front door with plastic barriers and floor coverings every morning and remove them every evening. Everyone was polite and sensitive to our living space. Jason was responsive to our wishes to refine several design aspects as the work proceeded, and Walter and his crew smoothly made the alterations. After the main construction was completed Jason remained very attentive to our ‘punch list’ of remaining details and our questions until all had been resolved. Walter ensured very high-quality work down to the finest detail. All the work from design to completion was well within the timeframe we had hoped. In the end, we have a beautiful MBR well beyond our original expectations!"

"I highly recommend City Renovations and Remodeling to new and experienced homeowners and investors. In fact, Mike Wiggs, owner of the company, was highly recommended to me from a trusted source. Mike has been my designer, general contractor and project manager for over three years. He and his team of subcontractors for all the trades and handymen have successfully completed numerous projects for me. The internal big jobs included Mike and his team remodeling my basement into a permitted apartment with an egress window, injection well system, and recessed lighting; remodeling my kitchen into a larger space, better layout and upgraded appliances, cabinets, backsplashes (e.g., switching from an electric cooktop island to a slide-in gas range and installing a peninsula); changing the location of the sliding door and a set of windows in my sunroom for better flow and sightline from the front door entry to the patio door leading to my wooded backyard; replacing the damaged one of the two HVAC systems (i.e., one for the first floor and basement and the other for the second floor); and whole house interior painting and decorative touches (accent walls, trim, etc.) The external big jobs included Mike and his team resolving the sources of severe water damage to my two-story front door entry area and installing a new door, side lites and stoop. "I've had my share of renovation projects performed by people of various levels of experience, races, ages, ethnic and educational backgrounds. All of them had one thing in common: all these charming, decent, diligent, God-fearing etc contractors magically turned into evil creatures who would poison your life by not following your instructions, showing up late, making a huge mess, spoiling everything, and then disappear into the thin air soon after the deposit money change hands. <br /> So in the beginning I was only cautiously optimistic about working with Israel Clavijo, although I was impressed my the level of his competence, punctuality, assertive yet very courteous manner. Little did I know that I was embarking on the most pleasing and carefree renovation experience of my life! <br /> My big home had only two tiny coat closets which could not possibly house even a small part of my large family's outdoor clothes and shoes. Huge shoe piles in a middle of our elegant foyer, and coats, scarfs and hats hanging everywhere were the eyesore. I've decided to sacrifice part of my underutilized living room to build a large walk-in closet, and turn the existing closets by the entrance door into practical shoe closets. Israel didn't blinked at the idea of building the closet in the living room. Instead, he offered number of very valuable suggestions, did quick measurements and presented me with the proposal on a next day. After checking a couple of more highly recommended home improvement companies, I've decided to go with ICM not only because they were slightly more reasonable but also because I felt more confident working with them. I didn't regret my choice. I was given an honest time frame, which they were able to adhere to, although I kept adding new requests. Israel introduced his crew to me, they were punctual, hard working, neat, and very polite. They would start in the morning and finish in the evening; no long breaks, no mid-week days off, thank you very much. The results were stunning! Incredibly, design and execution of a new closet actually improved my living room's proportions! Israel and his crew diligently saved the wall moldings and matched the paint - my new closet looks very much like a part of the room. As for my new shoe closets, they are every inch as practical as they are pleasure to look at! Instead of expensive LED tape lights, Israel installed cute cabinet lights which served the purpose at the reduced cost. They installed a heavy chandelier in a room that never had a ceiling light - it took an expertise, finesse, and wiliness to satisfy the client. Before they started, they protected floors and furniture with plastic wrap and cardboard. After they finished their work, they cleaned up after themselves. When I asked for a couple of touch-ups, Israel had no problem doing so. I cannot finish my review without mentioning Wendy Clavijo, Israel's wife, office manager and his customer/company liaison. Very polite, very friendly, very diligent, she was always there to help. Everyone who comes to my home makes positive comments on my unusual yet charming clothes and shoes arrangements.
