"I am very pleased with the results from William and Apolo. William knew exactly the type of screening I was looking for and was able to order and install it. They replaced the screen door and some rotten wood, as well as repainted the porch. During the process, they kept me informed on the progress, The quality of work was very good."

"Jesús and Fernando did a great job of making my rusty stair railings look good again after they were sanded and painted. They also fixed the screen door that always got stuck in hot weather. As a bonus, I got my mailbox painted as well! Very satisfied."

"Robert and his crew at RJ Contract did a fantastic job refurbishing my 30 year old deck. Very professional, great craftmanship, top notch communication - I couldn't be happier. Deck is essentially brand new with new composite decking and vinyl railing. I highly recommend anyone needing a new deck or a restoration to give RJ a call. You won't be disappointed."

"Luis was extremely kind and professional. He came out on a Sunday to provide an estimate (very responsive). The work was completed to our satisfaction and they even power washed a small section of our walkway going to the backyard that we did not request and they did not charge us for it. We have a large two tier deck and all the railings needed to be removed prior to painting and then put back on when the job was complete. They did an excellent job. Loved the fact that they painted the deck with brushes, did not spray paint. Would like to point out two small negatives. They missed several spots while painting underneath the deck. Excellent work everywhere but I felt they (the workers, not Luis) got a bit lazy while painting underneath. Also, threw masking tape, used to keep the railings together while doing the work, on the grass as if it were a trash can. Before I paid them, Luis kindly painted all the missed spots underneath the deck before he accepted payment. He wanted us to be 100% satisfied and we were. Would definitely hire this company again!"

"Great! They were very careful and even salvaged some tiles and pieces that we weren’t sure they would be able to. Marcus was great to work with and had good advice. Would hire them again! Also worth noting: we called around to make sure the price was in line with what others would charge for the same service, and it was at or below other quotes. In other words, we feel confident we got the best price/quality of service."

"Roland and team did a fantastic job on my new LVP floors! I could not be happier with the installation and finishing the team did on the transitions from my living room, stairs and foyer. They also did some painting and lite plumbing work. I can always count in this team to do a great job on all my home remodeling and repair needs!"

"I had need for a relatively quick turnaround for upgrading of a worn out kitchen.  Called Competitive Painters and Robert Coulter came to discuss options.  I should mention that I had two other companies come to provide estimates.  The owner of one of them, a highly rated Angies List company, spent most of her time telling me that I should talk to a real estate agent about how my kitchen should look.  She had no helpful ideas or suggestions.  In contrast, Mr. Coulter explained several options - including services that his company could not provide.  He pointed me to a reasonably-priced granite counter top provider and Competitive Painters prepared and painted all of the kitchen cabinets.  They worked within my limited time period and coordinated their work with the countertop company.  The work they did was neat and professional.  I was very pleased with the results.

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Frederick, MD

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
