"We purchased a home that needed a lot of updates. They took a wall down opening our main living space, painted kitchen cabinets and tiled floors, created bedroom, closet and laundry room. I’ve included before and after of the two rooms that were opened up and the kitchen (painted cabinets and tile floors). The bedroom, closet and laundry were done seamlessly and look as if they were always there. They did a fantastic job on all and in a very timely manner. I can’t imagine our home had we not done all that we did and High Caliber made it happen! We look forward to hiring them again soon to do what they specialize in the most and that is building us a new deck. Can’t wait!!"

"The job was done in a timely manner. The workers were professional and respectful during the entire time they were in our home and doing the needed work.  I would definitely use this person again if the need arises.  They were careful with my furniture and made sure that paint did not get where it does not belong. I am very thankful I found this company on Angie's List and would recommend them to others in the surrounding areas that may need work done in their home."

"After he figured out where the leak was coming from, he found that the whole faucet needed to be replaced. Had to travel 15 minutes away just to get a new one.  Cleveland is a very little town. I had an appointment so I had to leave him by his self to complete job. When I got back home everything was done and it looked good and no longer leaks. Thank you so much.

"I met the owner, Benji, in June after a small fire in my home that occurred back in February. The first restoration company that we used had to be fired because they did absolutely nothing for 3 moths. Benji was a God send, he promised that he could restore my home to its condition prior to the fire as well as the majority of the renovation/remodeling and act as my general contractor. I hired Advanced Quality Constructor for the job in June 2022. The framing jobs that he performed were all excellent with the exception of the one of the beams in the kitchen that was apparently cut during the demo but it was the beam of a load bearing wall so that needs to be fixed. The demo and framing that was done in the attic conversion also looked good. The issues started in areas where he didn't have or use the correct tools to do the job. The Master bathroom demo and renovation took almost (3) months for just 1 bathroom and once it was completed and inspected it was not done to my satisfaction. Due to using a circular saw instead of a table saw none of the cuts of a bathroom with tile for floor to ceiling were cut correctly. Each tile has very noticeable rugged ridges. Because of the continuous starting and stopping over the 3 months roughly 75% of the tile is either uneven or visibly crooked. The grouting is incomplete and was never even cleaned off. In the tile shower you can see indentations from each of the individual floor tiles grids. All of the edges of the tile will need some type of trim or crown molding to hide the rugged cuts. The bathroom vanity is a floating vanity and if you lean on it it moves like its about to fall off the wall, it's being held up by pieces of wood behind it that you can see because it wasn't mounted to a stud. He tiled the entire wall and then went back to mount the vanity. It's only been a month and the caulk is already beginning to crack. The shower head is leaking and running down the wall when you turn on the shower so I'm concerned that the leak is also happening behind the wall. My plumber said that it likely is and that I should remove the tile to double check. The hand shower does not work because he used an old handset from a different fixture instead of the one that came with the showered that I purchase. The wall mounted plumbing fixtures purchased for the standing tub are crooked and need to be taken out and redone. The door trim around master bath linen closet was removed and never replaced so now theres absolutely no trim around the door and there a piece of tile that was never cut that hangs about a foot and would prevent a door from being able to be closed anyway. The tile around all electrical wall switches is so unevenly cut that you can't use separate covers. I ordered jumbo size covers from Amazon that I'm hoping will work. The hot/cold faucets on the double sink are installed in the wrong direction so hot is on the right, cold is on the left, and they're faced inward instead of outward. Theres piles of lumber that was left, feet of sawdust that was never swept up, trashed lumber in my driveway that could have simply been put inside of the dumpster instead of leaving it around the dumpster. I also purchased a table saw that I was to be reimbursed for. The most hurtful thing is that I paid in advance for work that was never performed."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Fruithurst, AL

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
