When Nestor first came out to look at the project, he did a thorough walk through and asked good questions. I just happened to mention I also had a leak near the chimney on the roof, and he didn't hesitate to grab a ladder and climb up there to look at it. They did the work over a weekend, and were very polite and professional the whole time. They did a great job with the stucco, and were careful to not disturb any of the landscaping around the chimney. Overall, communication was good and scheduling was easy. "The technician arrived late and I needed to follow up with office to make sure I had the right expectation, which I did, and then shortly after he called me to let me know he was on the way. Not really too big a deal since he was about 45 minutes later than his window. My gas fireplace was not lighting properly and the pilot light would go out periodically. At the end of last winter I shut off the gas for safety reasons. I called Chimney Cricket because of the recommendations of Angies list, they have all A's. The technician was professional and did an inspection of the situation and components, he checked the remote starter and ended up changing all batteries. The remote was not "connecting" and the fire would not start. Shortly after the fire seemed to start on its own. The technician continued to assess the situation but eventually made the assessment, because he could not determine definitively the manufacturer of the log set and the apparent randomness of the fire starting, that I should completely replace all components of the fireplace. In follow up emails he was going to check into the situation further and get back to me on some recommendations, I did not hear back after more than a week so I went to the local fireplace shop (Chadds Ford Fireside Shop) to buy a whole new set. The shop salesman really questioned me and doubted that I would need to spend 2,000+ on a complete new set up including the chimney inspections and installation. He recommended that I spend another fee for "their" guy to come and have a look. I was not at all interested in paying another inspection fee, I argued with the salesman about how a professional had already assessed everything and that his guy was going to find the same, but I relented after the owner of the shop realized through our conversation that his shop had installed this fireplace and all components just 6 years prior. So the new chimney Technician came out today and after checking everything essentially pushed a reset button on the remote receiver to re-sync the remote transmitter and receiver. Now the fireplace is working fine again, he also cleaned the components and pilot light. I'm writing this review because 1) the price was very high for the service received (The other technician who fixed my remote today was MUCH more reasonable). 2) Chimney Cricket didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know. 3) For a technician who has been in the gas log fireplace business for 30+ years I don't understand why he didn't know to try pushing the reset button. 4) He ended up fixing nothing, he did not fully follow up to give me recommendations and aside from an honest Fireplace shop owner who was more interested in getting my fireplace working vs making a new sale I would have spent 2,000+ for a new set up."

I called for an estimate and made an appointment for 9:00 am on Saturday, Nov. 15.  John showed up about 8:15 with his 2 young workers who checked the chimney in the basement and then went on the roof.  The chimney had some missing bricks but other than that, needed nothing... the liner was in fine condition.  John told me they could do the job immediately for $785.  I said, how about $750 and he said ok.  They were there for about 40 minutes, re-cemented the missing bricks and put stucco all the way around the chimney. 

I made a check out to John Christman Chimney Repair but was told I had to make it out to him directly so I had to rip up the check and make out a new one. 

I really had only wanted an estimate since I had no idea if that was a fair price but felt I was caught off-guard and agreed to have him do the job.  After he left I decided that the price seemed very high for the amount of work that was done.  I tried to stop payment on the check but it was cashed IMMEDIATELY.  The next day I called a few other chimney repair places and they told me that the price seemed high for the amount of work that was done.

I suppose the lesson learned here is ALWAYS get at least 2-3 estimates before committing to having the work done.

"I purchased a special deal through Angieslist, $99 for chimney sweep and $200 dollar worth of masonry/Chimney repair. The crew arrived on time and were very polite. When I showed them the woodburning stove insert they both seemed confused by it, they said they weren't familiar with inserts and weren't really sure how it worked. They cleaned it out but were not able to look in the chimney because of the way it was set up. One of the gentleman told me its fine to use as long as smoke doesn't start to come in the house. Obviously. I was under the impression that people that bill themselves as chimney sweeps would be able to figure out how to check out the actual chimney.
Our house has another chimney in the rear that is not in use. There are gaps in the brick where the mortar has fallen out. I figured I'd use the $200 credit towards having them pointed. The gentleman went up on the roof and inspected the chimney. He said the chimney needed to be capped, rain was getting in and that was causing the erosion. Makes sense, during my home inspection the previous year we were told to have it done somewhere down the line. He said he would cap the chimney and seal the concrete around the chimney on the roof for an additional $200. He said there was no need to point the brickwork once the chimney is capped. The guys went on the roof for maybe 15 minutes and installed the cap and I guess seal something or other. I don't have a 40' ladder to get on the roof and actually see what they did but it couldn't have been much as they were only up there a few minutes and I didn't see them carry up any concrete. I suspect they probably used mortar sealant caulk which is fine but doesn't really equate to the price charged. My main gripe is that I paid $500 (99, 200 credit, 200 at time of service) for them to vacuum my fireplace insert and install a cap (found on home depot.com for $80) on the chimney. I get the feeling that when you buy this $99 deal they not really honoring the $200 credit. I'm no expert on this sort of thing but I don't think the work that was performed was anywhere near $500 worth. I also got the feeling they were in a bit of a hurry and that's part of the reason they didn't want to do the pointing work.
