Small jobs welcome

"Matt Moore is a total professional. Explained cost and how much gravel needed upfront. He showed up on time all days he was supposed to be here, very friendly, kind, hardworking , and honest. Completed job well under his estimate. I’m already planning to have him back to do two more jobs. Very happy with his work, he was a pleasure to deal with- highly recommend."

Customers say: Quick response

"Isaacs is a true professional who obviously loves and takes pride in his work. He first provided a free estimate, coordinated a installation date with us, and arrived on said date on time and ready to go to work. When I suggested a different river rock than planned and an alternative supplier he had never worked with, Isaacs was very open to the suggestion and went to that source to ensure we were satisfied with the end result. He also suggested the material for the retaining wall which turned out beautiful. We plan on using Delgado Landscaping in the future and would recommend his company to anyone needing such work."

"We had let our backyard go, and it was full of tall weeds. They came in and cleared out all the weeds, and put down new mulch to prevent future weeds. They also added mulch to our front yard areas. The gave a quote and performed the work just as we expected. I asked for a few more areas to be mulched after they left, and they gladly came back and touched up those areas for me. Very professional."

"So far the process with LML has gone well.  Ryan and Brenda have been pleasant to work with.  Before doing any billable work Ryan scheduled a free consultation that involved visiting our property in mid-February and discussing potential landscaping ideas (we had only vague notions of what we wanted), and he asked us to complete a fairly extensive Landscape Design Questionnaire that helped us contemplate and articulate what we wanted.  After we returned that questionnaire and a design contract with a $200 deposit, Brenda took site measurements, and about one month later Ryan met with us to discuss the completed design.  At that meeting, which lasted more than an hour, he was very patient about answering our (often naive) questions about the choice of plants, aspects of the layout, various options (e.g., drainage basins, accent rocks) and minor changes (e.g., room for a mulch pile), maintaining the landscape, etc. <br /> It's hard for us to judge the quality of LML's work, because we know very little about landscaping and have never hired a professional landscape architect for such a major project (about $12,300 for all 3 phases); we've only hired landscapers for much smaller projects, and they didn't have much formal training.  Another challenge in evaluating LML's work is that the landscape itself hasn't yet been installed -- we paid for the design separately (but see below) -- and even after it's installed we probably won't be able to evaluate it properly for a few years until it matures. <br /> That raises another challenge in evaluating professional landscape services: Although LML's prices might seem high, it's important to consider the value of hiring a business with their collective expertise in designing, installing, and maintaining landscapes that are well-adapted to the local climate and tailored to the customer's preferences (e.g., gardening interests and experience, willingness to water).  Although you can almost certainly find someone who'll design and install beds and plants for substantially less, the ultimate value of their work depends heavily on its long-run quality.  My impression is that LML's expertise (e.g., Ryan's 5-year degree in landscape architecture) and dedication to horticulture, as demonstrated in part by the extensive information provided on their website, are well worth the additional expense compared to less-experienced contractors. <br /> I should note three more things.  First, although we could've hired someone else to install the landscape that LML designed (or done it ourselves), we've hired LML to install the first of three phases (for about $6,000), which is scheduled to be done this week.  Second, the design fee is refundable if we hire LML to install it, so in a sense the design is free.  Third, one reason we were drawn to LML is that they offer maintenance plans, which will help us learn how to care for our new landscape and reduce the burden of maintaining in ourselves. <br />"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Topeka, KS

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
