"Chimney Chap did an excellent job replacing the termination cap on my Vermont Castings gas stove at a reasonable cost. The two technicians who performed the work were very professional and worked hard to overcome some unforeseen installation difficulties. From my initial e-mail to the installation of the cap, Chimney Chap was very responsive. Meanwhile, some other companies I contacted were unresponsive and less interested in performing a small installation project. I will surely contact Chimney Chap, Inc. in the future if I experience any problems with my gas stove."

It was recommended "several years ago" due to some minor tile damage that we get a liner installed but we never did. So this time around we decided to get one. "I learned that the flues did not need cleaning, but that there was about 4 feet of flue lining that was missing from the top of the chimney--there are ceramic tiles in there and for whatever reason, 4 ft were missing from the top. He did this by bringing 18 guys, including several who were very talented in the rubber roof application and the re-integration of the 25 year old vinyl siding. "We just moved into a new house, and we called Bob's Magic Broom to come check out the chimney to see if it was safe to use. Carl came out and, after inspecting the chimney, told us we didn't need to get it swept since the previous owners hadn't used it and it was very clean. I appreciated his honesty when he certainly could have told me otherwise and I wouldn't have known the difference. He also checked out our very old furnace and let us know there was significant soot pileup which would need to be cleaned. Since we were planning to convert from oil to gas in a few months, he walked us through what the typical conversion was like, which was helpful. He also said we would likely need to cut a 2nd clean out door in our chimney to remove the soot, since the current door was not up to code, and we'd have to get it done anyway when we converted. Mike Foote impressed me immediately with his promptness - he always arrived at the time he said he would, which to me indicates a level of professionalism, trustworthiness, and respect for my time that I appreciate. 

He also had an understanding and appreciation for older homes and construction methods which I felt would be an asset, as my home was built in the early 1900s and was in need of significant structural repair.  I wanted someone who would be able to handle the unforeseen complications that inevitably arise when major repairs must be done on an older home, and someone who would also seek to respect and retain its personality (quirks and all.)

I bid the project out to several contractors using the same project scope and description.  Mike's estimate was at the lower end of the range and of all the contractors, he took the most time to explain the breakdown of costs.  Furthermore, prior to my awarding the project contract to him, Mike went out of the way to do significant legwork and fact finding related to permitting and local regulations.  He had no obligation to do this, but the effort was greatly appreciated and certainly helped sway my decision in his favor.

It became known to us that we would need to hire a structural engineer to remain in compliance with local inspections and regulations.  Mike did a great job as an intermediate contact for the engineer, and also attempted to keep the project cost and scope expansion under control.

Throughout the project the job site was kept as clean and orderly as could be reasonably expected, which was no small feat given the scope of the work and the confined spaces they were operating in.  

Whenever there was an unexpected complication that required additional work or expense, Mike would take the time to lay out the various options (and the pros and cons of each) for how to proceed.  Throughout the entire project, I found his communication skills to be exemplary.  This was very helpful logistically, since I was often away at work while the project was in flight.  It also established and maintained a sense of trust between us.  Mike would keep me posted with regular status updates, would meet with me regularly to discuss the progress and various issues that he thought should be brought to attention, and was always very responsive to questions I had.  He was very easy to get a hold of, which I appreciated tremendously.

And of course, I am extremely happy with how everything wrapped up.  There was one significant increase in project scope and cost related to the stone footing at grade - something that Mike had warned would throw an element of uncertainty into his estimate - but this was handled very fairly and expertly.  the work looks great, and my neighbors have all commented on the professionalism of his crew and the impressive final outcome. 

I would not hesitate to hire him again for any project in my home - whether it be small or large - and would not hesitate to refer him to friends or family.
