"He was exceedingly prompt and efficient at getting the work done, which was in contrast to other contractors I called, who never even returned my call. Having given me an estimate the previous year, he did the work for the same price, got finished on time and did an excellent job. I will hire him again if he is still available."

"I had a gravel driveway installed in 2019 that was done incorrectly. The pitch was done incorrectly and no drainage was put in, so my driveway was washing away and there were lots of deep divots making the driveway nearly impassable. I also happen to live on a significant slope. Chuck and his team corrected the pitch of the driveway and put drainage in. After very heavy rains, additional work needed to be done and he came out again to make some corrections. Most contractors would never do this. Now, my driveway is not being washed out, and the rain is being diverted to a safe location away from the house thanks to a drainage path. Chuck did everything in his power to make sure I was taken care of, and is the most honest contractor I have ever worked with. I appreciated his diligence in making sure the job was done right and within my budget."

"We started out doing the service and then they did other projects/requests for us. The most important thing that they did was they did was the landscaping. They put in plants that they suggested, knowing our area and climate. That didn’t work out so they replaced some of them, but they were not as good as what they had originally planted. Some things died during the winter and then they replaced those. Technically they did what they said they would do, but as a whole, it doesn’t look very good and the end product was a little disappointing. I also wished they would have followed up more."

"Grant Smith did a good job of listening to what we wanted which he used to develop a very nice preliminary design for our new flagstone patio and walkway. He has a great aesthetic design sense, and that preliminary arrangement was very close to what we eventually went with. We then were able to interactively fine-tune the design at Grant's office until we arrived at the final scope. He was open to ideas to that would save us money while still preserving the original overall concept. Grant then supplied the design drawings that we needed to attach to our application for approval for the project from the local HOA.

Demo of the previously existing concrete pad in the area was started on the day promised. Bryan and his crew then took over and put down a solid gravel sublayer before coming back with the flagstones and polymeric sand. Bryan was very meticulous to make sure that the patio had the proper slope to ensure good drainage, and that the stones fit together properly to create a great-looking final installation. Bryan and his team then put down amended soil and planted the trees that were part of the design, and then covered the remaining planting areas with mulch as planned."

"She was a good talker and she based her comments on what I was looking to. She said we go in and we get the job done and not sit around and take an hour for lunch. We are going to work for you and charge you for the work and we leave. Based on that and the charge and her estimate on one day, we said okay, fine. However, she was supposed to e-mail me an estimate and we never heard from her again."

"Excellent in every way. This was a difficult job - removing an existing retaining wall and rebuilding it with stone blocks in a long, narrow area behind our house. Included the installation of wall lights and steps from lower to upper yard. Lawn Butler provided the required skill at a reasonable cost with great customer service. They also do a great job maintaining out lawn!"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Harriman, TN

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
