"Great phone communication in scheduling the visit, arrived on time, called ahead, very courteous and helpful, looked at everything, diagnosed the problem, suggested a solution (replace the cold control unit). I initially agreed on them replacing the cold control, but then changed my mind, decided that I'd replace the unit myself to save some money. Called them right away, and they cancelled the order without an issue. After replacing the cold control unit the fridge is back to normal, so their diagnosis was spot-on. I'll use them again whenever I need service/diagnostics of appliances."

"My technician, Art, was timely, professional and effective. He came over for a brief inspection in November. Arnold Electric promptly sent me a proposal, and I scheduled two sessions in December/January. For the first session, Art and one colleague worked diligently for the full morning. When Art arrived for the second session, he only had to do some minor tweaks because almost all of the work was already done. Art did the job we agreed upon and everything seems to be working as expected. He and the rest of the team are definitely talented, and I have zero complaints about the quality of the service I received. The pricing (agreed upon at the beginning of the project) seemed quite high after all was said and done. The total was $3,125 for around 11 man-hours of work in my apartment. I understand electricians have indirect costs, such as travel and administration, but I still feel as though I could have hired a different high quality/service-oriented electrician for less. When I brought this concern up with the Arnold Electric's office, they explained to me that they typically do not make adjustments to pricing (upwards or downwards) based on a proposal taking more or less time than expected. This seems like a fair policy, but I think I will shop around for my next project."

"The owner and his cousin came out for the initial assesment on Nov. 2015 and made an estimate for 700 not including Angiest List deal of 29 which would be discounted. For the next visit the price went to 800 (a deal we were assured if we left a good review) and, as we were excited to have two working ovens on our old Roper, we agreed and paid. As the repairs went on, they were missing pieces they need to obtain (included in the cost) and rescheduled. Months went by, many phonecalls, messages left and threats to take them to small claims court, to be told they were still waiting for the part. Six months later, again after many messages left, being put on hold and hung up on, we finally spoke to the owner who again initially promissed to fix, then aknowledged the part was not available for the price. We agreed to getting half the cost back, then they could not locate the original receipt (we needed to provided it) and finally, months later (now September 2016) we received a check for $250 in our mailbox (not half as promised). Overall they did repair one oven, had abismal customer service, did not refunds us for half the cost as promised and, to our knowledge, did not honor Angies' List deal. I would not recommend them specifically for lack of professionalism."

FAQs for appliance (microwave oven) installation and replacement projects in Harvard, IL

A pro can finish the job in one to three hours. Countertop models are the quickest, but built-in, drawer, and over-the-range units take longer because the installer may need to run a new outlet, modify cabinets, or add venting. Any add-ons can push the timeline closer to the three-hour mark. Hiring a licensed installer ensures the wiring is safe and the appliance operates at peak performance.

Because an over-the-range microwave doubles as a range hood, it needs proper venting. You can opt for a recirculating model that filters and recirculates air back into the kitchen, or a ducted unit that exhausts outdoors. Are you unsure which route suits your cooking style? Ask your installer for guidance before making a purchase.

Only microwaves labeled “over-the-range” have the built-in venting and lighting that’s necessary for safe, code-compliant use above a stove. Countertop models don’t have those safeguards. Before you swipe your card, have a licensed microwave installer confirm you’re choosing the right unit for the space and ensure compliance with local codes.

It’s best not to install a countertop microwave in your cabinets. Countertop models aren’t designed for use in an enclosed cabinet, and blocking those vents can trap moisture or even create a fire hazard. A built-in or drawer microwave is designed for tight spaces. Run your plans by an installer to make sure you’re buying the right style for the spot.

You don’t need an electrician if the outlet already meets the microwave’s power needs and sits in the right spot. In that case, you’re good to go ahead with the installation. If the outlet is undersized, outdated, or too far away, hire a licensed electrician to install a new one and ensure everything is code-compliant.

With routine care, most microwaves last between five and 10 years. To help them reach their maximum lifespan, wipe up spills immediately, wash the grease filter periodically, avoid using metal dishware, and close the door gently. Those simple habits reduce malfunctions and keep the appliance running smoothly for the long haul.
