"Two men from GoGen arrived to help me sort out the origin of half my home losing power in the ceiling lights and wall plugs between four rooms. One told me that I needed to upgrade my outdoor electric box and that it was out of code for new homes. They then came into my home to test the electric current in the plugs that didn't work--one by one (even opening my fridge to confirm it was on). One of my breakers was tripped from the winter storm and flipping the switch fixed 95% of the problem. From there, they told me to conduct a diagnoses and repair to one line of connected plugs, the cost would be $365 per set, and that I had two, but they would only charge me for one. The set fee covered up to 4 hrs of work. The repair took 25 minutes and involved snipping a burned wire and re-twisting it with one that was in good condition to restore power. I later called to ask for the 20% Angies List Membership discount, and while hesitant, they honored it. This sort of balanced things out."

"I was in need of a good electrical company due to some interesting things going on with my home electrical and our guest apartment. E&D Electric came to give me a free estimate and in doing so they took the time to understand thoroughly the issue at hand and practically identified the issue in my main home right away. While the guest apartment was more difficult, the rough idea Mr. Gonzalo had on the issues there, was not far off. When I called to approve the quote which was fair compared to other outrageous quotes I got from other companies, they responded immediately and got me in the schedule very fast even with the holidays. While they arrive a little later than expected, once they began the work, they repaired it quickly and with high quality and safety as priority. There was a minor oversight in the panel at my main home, but it was corrected right away and for that I’m more than pleased as well. Needless to say this company has my highest recommendation."

"Have used Chris and his team on several occasions! 1. They installed electrical and a fan setup for our old outdated first home. 2. Expedited services for me(bringing electrical stuff up to code) to help close on the sale of our 2nd house. Definitely recommend anytime anyone needs electrical services done. Very reliable and we never feel unsafe with them doing work for us!"

"The owner, Kelly, was terrific. I spoke with him by phone and he came by that day to inspect our home theater system. As promised, he called me the next day with an estimate, had a solution that saved me potentially hundreds of dollars, and scheduled the service call within just a few days. He arrived on time and repaired the system for less than his estimate, and it is working perfectly. He cleaned his work area, and frankly, it looked better than when he arrived! It was such a pleasure working with Kelly. If I could just clone him as a plumber! THE UGLY STORY THAT LED UP TO KELLY SAVING THE DAY Best Buy originally installed our home theater several years ago. In mid-July I damaged a single connector from our home theater to an outdoor TV, and the picture became distorted (no reds in the color). At the scheduled visit, they agreed that the connector I had damaged needed to be replaced, but instead of replacing that plug, they cut off all of the connectors to install new plugs, and then discovered that they didn't have the correct connectors, nor did they have them in stock. In order to expedite the repair, they asked me to purchase the connectors at a local electronics store, and then call them to reschedule the repair. That weekend I spent $40 on new connectors, and then called to arrange the next service call. The next week they returned to complete the repair (and did not offer to reimburse me for the connectors), but discovered that they needed an additional connector part for each connector. They promised to locate that part, and then call to reschedule a 3rd visit and complete the repair. Over the next several weeks I was travelling and very busy at work, but they never called to reschedule. I finally called the first week of September, and with several calls finally reached a Geek Squad rep through their 800 number. She did some research and told me that one of the technicians was no longer with the company, but that she would track down the other technician. Eventually we scheduled a final repair for September 20 (10 weeks from the initial service call). (Note: When you call Kelly's number, Kelly answers or if you leave a message and he calls right back.) When the technicians arrived, they worked for an hour trying to get the connectors to work. They called a Best Buy specialist/troubleshooter, and were told that the connectors would probably not work correctly because the cable was several years old, had probably shrunk some (dried out) and the plugs would not seat correctly. (This turned out to be false--they were using the wrong connectors. Kelly spotted it immediately and said that only one company made the connector to fit the component cable Best Buy had originally installed). The technicians suggested that a new cable would need to be pulled through the walls and ceiling, but that they would not reimburse me for any damage that might occur if they had to cut into the walls or ceiling. (If they had only worked on the single connector, they "might" have been able to fix the problem. But when they cut all of the connectors, it created a tsunami affect that made it impossible to repair.) Most readers would not have waited as many weeks to get to this point, but I finally decided to call someone else to give me an estimate. I called Bjorn's, spoke with their service department, and they said that normally they did not do repair work for home theater systems unless they had installed the equipment and cabling, but they would check on it and get back to me. They never called back. Next, I called Signal Audio. After a phone call, a prompt visit to inspect the system, a promise of an estimate and return visit to repair the system, and another phone conversation, they never called back. (In defense of Angie's List, this company did not yet have a review.) I went to Angie's List again, found Wire Works (Kelly), and it everything went like clockwork. Not only did Kelly under promise and over deliver, he saved me from having to pay for a very expensive cable pull and potential repair to walls and ceiling. His initial estimate was so reasonable, I asked him to clean up the mass of wires behind our home theater cabinet (it was so bad the component cabinet couldn't be pushed back into place). The original install had stacks of extra cabling. Kelly cleaned out an arm full of wires and the cabinet slipped right into place. I can't say enough good things about Wire Works."

My experience was phenomenal with Mr. Elliott. He first came exactly a week before the work was done for inspection and we went over how I could not stand getting into my attic because of how hot it was in there. Another issue that I was having is that I even had a raccoon living in a part of my attic that had never been seen or insulated until his crew came on work day. When he inspected everything, he noticed that the two fans I had then were out of date and probably had quit working months ago.

Work day comes, and they made it on the time that I had asked them to come because I had to drop off my children. They were respectable of my situation and came at the time I was available. They set up two solar fans as replacements the old fans I had first that way air could already being circulating. They did not take long to do the insulation part of the job until the employee who was blowing the insulation found a secret part of my attic that I had no idea was there. Turns out the company that insulated my attic before them had covered up the little gap with a plastic radiant barrier. I was pleased that the employee was professional enough to actually tell me about my secret attic room and he went ahead and insulated it at no extra cost.

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Hondo, TX

Yes, a licensed electrician is essential for this project. Running an electrical service from the road to your house involves connecting to utility power lines, complying with national and local electrical codes, and safely handling high-voltage systems.

Licensed professionals understand proper wire sizing, grounding requirements, and voltage drop calculations needed for safe installation. Most jurisdictions require permits and inspections that only certified professionals can obtain. The safety risks and potential for property damage make this project inappropriate for DIY attempts.

Overhead installations are less expensive than underground options. For a 1000-foot run, overhead service costs between $8,000 and $15,000, while underground service ranges from $10,000 to $25,000.

Overhead lines require less labor and fewer materials since they don't need trenching or conduit. However, underground lines offer better protection from weather events and aesthetic benefits. Your decision should balance your budget constraints with long-term reliability and visual preferences.

You might need to upgrade your electrical panel depending on your power requirements. If your existing panel cannot handle the additional load from the extended service, upgrading to a 200-amp service (costing $750 to $2,000) may be necessary.

A licensed electrician can evaluate your current system and determine if an upgrade is required. Factors include what you'll be powering at the end of the line, existing electrical demand, and whether voltage drop over the distance will affect performance.

Running electric service from the road to a house requires electrical permits from your local building department, costing between $500 and $2,000 depending on your location. You may also need excavation permits for trenching work if installing an underground service. Your utility company will have its own application process for connecting to its grid. A licensed electrical contractor can handle all the necessary permit applications as part of their service, ensuring your installation meets all local code requirements.
