"Lisa is a genius! With creativity and precision, she maximized every nook and cranny of our tiny 1906 cottage and brought it into the 21st century, while maintaining its original charm and character. Our "new" home is so much more functional now, and a delight to live and work in. Lisa took the lead on our projects (kitchen, bathroom, basement), but Adam is equally savvy. Both are fantastic listeners, brainstormers, collaborators, total professionals and all-around lovely human beings. We highly recommend Christie Architecture, and look forward to working with them again in the future!"

"Pat has always done quality work, as the name of his company accurately suggests. Everything he has ever done, whether by him personally, his crew or sub-contractors has been top notch. He listens, works really well with you to get done what you want, gives accurate and realistic estimates (which he doesn't change as the project goes along, unless you change the plans, like some contractors do), and keeps you informed as the project proceeds. He also works with you on scheduling, and doesn't delay or temporarily abandon the project without talking to you  when another job comes up as many contractors are famous for doing. He is a general contractor, so manages everything for you - including permits, etc. When he built the house for me, he even worked with me to design the layout and created the building plans - saving me the costs of an architect. And, the house turned out beautifully. And he stands by his work, coming back at no charge to fix any minor issues (of which there are very few) that might pop up after the job is completed. He has also done other minor and major remodeling jobs for my neighbors, and they have always been pleased as well. This most recent job was a very complicated  project, as my wife wanted little pieces of glass and metal inlayed into a slate kitchen backsplash. So, Pat accurately estimated that the work would cost more because of the need to cut the slate, in just the right place and in the exact right measurement, to insert the small pieces and then line everything up correctly.  So, it was an intricate and tough job, but the results were impeccable.  I can wholeheartedly recommend Allways Quality Construction for any building project - small or large."

"It went beautifully from start to finish. Excellent product choices, and quot;cut aboveand quot; decor recommendations and complete satisfaction with his work. We consider Rafael a craftsman, rather than a carpenter. People often slow their vehicles to take in the beauty of our and quot;magicand quot; cottage -style home. We often recommend him as a qualified, detail-oriented builder.. <br />"

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Hood River, OR

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
