"We are so pleased with the job Bryan and his crew did on our new front porch steps and side yard extension, including providing fill dirt and contouring our yard to accommodate the new extension. We contacted Bryan late in the fall. Bryan came out in less than a week to review our project and provided his expertise on designing our new porch layout. We had a detailed quote by the weekend, were placed on his schedule and provided an approximate completion date for the following spring. Bryan and his crew completed the job ahead of schedule and in two days! He and his crew did a fantastic job from start to finish. They were very professional in all aspects. They arrived as promised and on time, worked together seamlessly and were very organized. They left the job site very clean and paid attention to every last detail. Without hesitation, we highly recommend Bryan and Quality Concrete & Masonry!!"

"This is the third delivery I've had from KLS. Renovating a house with a dirt driveway that was a mud pit this spring. I knew I needed to do something, but expensive options like paving were not possible. KLS recommended first 4' of stabilized gravel spread and driven over to smash it down (same thing they use for gravel roads). Then a 2' layer of crushed stone on top. They are very patient and helpful in explaining options and how to's. <br /> I also had them deliver some landscaping stone for around my house. <br />"

"I needed some repairs to my chimney and was having an awful time getting a reputable contractor to do the work.  I had a lot of contractors not return my calls, and two of them even said they would do the work and then not call me until it was months past the estimate of when they could do the work. <br /> Mr. Mollitor was wonderfully professional and responsive.  He always returned my calls in a timely fashion and gave me honest assessments of when he could get to our chimney.  His bid was reasonable and throughly explained.  As a result, we accepted his bid to work on our chimney.  <br /> A few weeks later, another  contractor had a opening in his schedule and said he could get to our chimney sooner.  We shared that info with Mr. Mollitor, and he graciously said that we should take advantage of that opportunity so we could get the repairs done sooner.  He said he had plenty of work to keep him busy, and he hoped we'd keep him in mind for other work. <br /> We absolutely would recommend contacting Mollitor's Construction -- it is so refreshing to work with a contractor who is responsive and professional! <br />"

"Initially I contacted the owner who came out personally to discuss my project and give me an estimate.  I had told him that I wanted to do the job one time and not have to go back each year to add more gravel.  He suggested that I go with layers of gravel starting with the large size stone and finishing with the finer crushed stone.   His son came in and did the job and the driveway looks Great! <br />"

"Attention to detail and quality of finish was equal to my expectations which were high. I had wanted them to create a seamless transition between the sidewalk and wheel chair ramp which they did resulting in a "no bump" effect. Hard working crew who were personable and easy to communicate with."

"John is a skilled tradesman, arrived a tad late, but was casual and confident. Looked at the task, said the estimate would be by the hourly rate ($80 an hour if I recall correctly), and made two trips to finish the task, a few hours each time (two different areas so that worked out for us). Asked us to check his work before he left, methodical and exact workmanship. I really like this guy! The exterior wall is over 40years old exposed to the elements, and he patched any breakage in the mortar, fixed any separations and finished the area where a new window went in. After everything dried, does not look obvious that any "patch" or "repair work had been done- blends right in! Knew the stone product (no longer available) and how to make it look new. We were really satisfied! <br />"

"Their work went very well, they came when they were supposed to and they did the work. Even when they underestimated the quote they still did the job and didn't quote more than the previous one and they also cleaned up after themselves"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Kalamazoo, MI

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
