"I first met with Cindi Landreth, Adaptions Design Studio, in my home with Rick Dubrow from A-1 Builders Inc to discuss remodeling my bathroom, including certain aging in place options. Once the contract was signed, I begin working with Tristen Graybill, a designer with Adaptions. Tristen prepared a lay out for the bathroom design for my review. We talked and met several times to discuss various options. I worked with Tristen to select tile, paint, and plumbing fixtures. She was very attentive to my questions and concerns and listened to my thoughts and ideas. She was great at putting together different tile for the shower that would still coordinate with the existing floor tile and reassured me when I had concerns. She was available throughout the remodel when questions came up, including clarifying the tile layout. She was very responsive to my phone calls and emails. In short, she was a delight to work with! <br />"

"Extremely well. Aaron and his crew worked steadfastly through some of the worst weather conditions and never missed a beat. When design challenges arose he was able to meet them with creative solutions. Throughout the project Aaron made design suggestions that reflected the importance of scale and materials. From start to finish the attention to finish and detail, and the importance of plumb, true and square were evident. "No challenge was to big for Big Mountain""

"DTM Construction remodeled our kitchen. We could not be more pleased. A time line was provided and followed. Every worker who came to our home was courteous and professional. Our concerns and needs were always at the top of the list. Work was completed on time for fair costs as originally established. It was a positive experience, and the results are outstanding. Price reflects total cost of the remodel (cabinets, etc.)."

"Ray was very personable and returned my call right away.  He came out to my home and took notes on my kitchen remodel that involved the removal of a wall and the extension of 2 existing walls.  I needed a floor plan and some cross section details to submit for my building permit.  Ray offered a very reasonable price, however I was able to have a friend who works in a shop and does design work help me with it, enough to get it submitted.  My  project was pretty small, and really could not bare the extra costs of getting professional plans done, if I was doing more work, I think Ray offered a valuable service. <br />"

I have over 30 years experience in all aspects of finish carpentry and vintage home and furniture restoration. I do not have employees; just me. Finding creative solutions to solving problems is one of my strong points. I am available for sub-contracting. I prefer to do work on a cost plus basis for home owners.

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Lopez Island, WA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
