"In beginning of June, we paid our deposit and then found out that the plan was to install siding in September. We asked if there was a possibility to move that timing up and they were able to squeeze us in mid-July. Was super excited but then received an email about a week before we thought the siding project would start asking if we wanted the outer corners to match the color we had selected and if so, there was an upcharge and that "non-stock colors" were running about 45 days to order so they would need to push back the date by 45 days. This was never discussed during the sales process. I expressed my concern and Joni was able to locate the outer corners and adjust the schedule to start in end of July and agreed to cover the "upcharge" since this was something new to her as well. Then, she told us that we need to pick soffit/fascia colors, but that anything other than white would require a week or two delay. But then she called back and said she was able to pull some strings and find the color we had requested. So, lots and back and forth about dates. We also had a mason scheduled to come after the siding install so we had to communicate all these changes with him. it was a bit frustrating with all the date changes. Seems like things that CHI should already be aware of and should know to prep the customers upfront and let them know the dependencies on starting the project. When the job started, the team all showed up on time every day. They did a really nice job on the siding and soffits/fascia. That is why I gave them an “A” for quality, but was disappointed with the following: 1.) Poor communication from the start to the end of the actual work. Pat saw some rotting wood while doing the work and replaced it. He never mentioned the cost or asked about it before proceeding forward with the work. While we appreciate his proactiveness, I feel like he should have asked us (if he was going to charge us for it) before doing the work. In any event, he told us about it after the fact and I just saw a line item on our invoice for the work. He also barely communicated with us while he was here. Didn't know when the dumpster was getting removed or what to do with the material left. 2.) We have found numerous screws, nails and sharp metallic options around our house. No one even mentioned that we should be careful moving around outside. This is especially bothersome as we have little kids running around. 3.) Everything was collected on the final day, BUT the porta potty. There was no communication around when it would be picked up either. To be fair, the job was complete on Friday morning and it was picked up by Monday afternoon, but it would have been nice for someone to let us know the plan since it was sitting in our driveway. My biggest complaint with this company is their lack of communication. This is a lot of money to be spending and the project management is less than desirable."

"<p>We had previously worked with Chris and his crew on replacement of a failing timber retaining wall with a contoured block version. That earlier work involved demolition and removal of treated posts and lumber while extending a pre-existing section using an Anchor block product. The segmented, angular wall was replaced by a contoured design that provided more room for a prized shade tree. During this initial, 2012 phase, we found Chris very easy to work with. He was receptive to our concepts and offered constructive comments- we didn't want a deferential contractor that would let us make bad choices. Chris speaks up in a respectful way. The crew happily worked with street pavers that were on-site. <br /> That earlier work turned out so nicely that we resolved to continue the project the in 2013 as our vision for completion firmed up. There are obvious advantages to completing the entire job at once, but even using design software, it is difficult to feature how it will all turn out. Change orders and call-backs are no fun for anyone. For us, it worked to live with an incomplete project for a few seasons to really know what we wanted.<br />  <br /> The 2013 work would involve constructing low planters in both the front and back yards, extending the patio work in the back yard, adding edgers and completing sod work. Chris returned with the same crew (a plus for us) and was rarely not on site himself during either project. This work was complicated by an impending family reunion. To avoid damaging existing landscaping, most of this second phase was completed with wheelbarrows and hand tools.  Once again, there were design and material selection considerations as well as technical issues, including rainwater management.  There was no objection to the owners contributing labor. In turn, we tried to stay ahead of the crew or out of the way.</p> <br /> The entire project is now complete- we are delighted and have received nothing but compliments. <br /> <br />"

"Final Grade returned to our home to replace a few plants that had not survived the winter. <br /> They were prompt and professional and performed the work without any issues. <br /> And the honored their original pricing - no additional charge for the follow-up. <br /> At the same time, we added to our landscaping, having Final Grade install edging.  Great job! <br />"

"Daniel and his team completely understood what I wanted. They rebuilt the steps using as many of the existing stones as possible, cut new stones as necessary to match, filled in missing mortar, powerwashed, and sealed. The final bill was actually less than their estimate. The end result is stunning. I wish I could post before and after pictures."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Milaca, MN

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
