"Kyle is extremely professional and hard working. Everything from grading our driveway, to Rotor tilling our backyard to prepare it for new seeding. Heâ s helped with our pool platform, helped move brush, drag some trees and moved rocks. Over the last 5 years he has done a vast array of project for us. Heâ s our go to guy for any landscaping or anything we might need a tractor for or freshening up our yard."

"David from Vermont Stone gave us a full and complete estimate. He encouraged us to ask questions and to visit the materials yard to decide on the path and wall stones and to pick the right colors to complement our home. He answered every question we had. Work started promptly and he carted away the debris of the excavation nightly, so we didn't have piles messing up our front yard. We watched the precision with which David measured and staked the exact dimensions of the retaining wall, making sure we agreed with the height and extent. He reviewed the work with us and cleaned up before leaving daily. Laying out the shape and curves of the walkway path was a collaboration. David always made sure we understood the design and placement of the paving stones as he progressed. We talked about how to fill in at the edges of the work and David brought many loads of top soil for the garden and to smooth out the levels to our lawn. We are extremely pleased with our new retaining wall and walkway built by Vermont Stone."

"Bill Hayes showed up on time, preformed the work doing a super professional job and stuck to the quote even though the job took a little longer. He left the site clean and in a better condition than when he arrived. Bill Hayes was very experienced and efficiently and expertly operated his equipment in our tight back yard. We recommend him and would hire him back again. He is very talented and good at what he does, we were very lucky we hired him because he knew how to stabilize the bank. We had been looking for someone that knew how to do this but we're not convinced that just a retaining wall would work. Now our house is protected, our bank is stabilized with large boulders, our bank can now become be a beautiful rock garden this summer with plantings in between the puzzled together rocks. Thank you Bill!"

"We've used them a few times. We deal with Lance Fournier. We paid them a lot and it worked very well. We have also used them for the lawn and landscaping. We were very happy with them. As I recall they honored the estimate even though it came in over. They were courteous and very professional. They provide a variety of services. They are local. It is a one guy company instead of a franchise so he is very vested. They were not cheap."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Milton, VT

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
