"I was told by appliance delivery men from a major retail furniture store that I needed to move an electrical outlet to accommodate a new double oven replacing a single oven, and that the water supply for a new refrigerator was clogged. Having spent hundreds of dollars on electricians before, and having two other electrical issues I wanted done, the $49Handyman deal for $65 sounded like a good low risk way to check things out. After returning the appliances to the store and ordering new ones elsewhere, I learned on my own the waterline was fine and it was the new appliance that was faulty so that limited my repair needs to the electrical. I learned the $49Handyman contracts out most of his electrical work. Earl, their electrician, contacted me to set up an appointment on a Saturday as he was working another job out of town during the week. He quickly determined the wires to the oven had little leeway to be moved to a "recessed" location on the wall instead of on the floor where it was supposedly blocking the oven from sitting flush with the wall. He offered two possible solutions but indicated it would be best to determine which to use after the replacement oven was delivered. He offered to come back to do the work without additional charge. In the meantime, he quickly determined the basement light switch was defective and a fire hazard (i.e. arcing and melted wires) so he replaced it on the spot. He also dismantled the bathroom fan and determined the motor was shot. He told me what parts were needed and showed me how to fix it if I wanted to do it myself which I decided to do.  He offered to do the work if I had trouble, when he came back to fix the oven outlet.  After he left I went to Lowe's where I ran into Earl coming out of the store. He came back into the store with me and helped me find the fan parts.  In fact, he searched around and found a replacement motor so I wouldn't have to buy the whole housing, saving me about $20. The fan went together easily and exactly like he said. After the new replacement oven was delivered, I determined the outlet did not need to be moved as it would only save me an inch more of space given the design of the oven back so I did not have Earl return.  I definitely would use Earl again though and given my experience, would most likely try the $49Handyman again for something.

"Technician came to the house and analyzed the problem. It was determined that the cost of repair was over the allowable Choice Home Warranty limit and it should be replaced. Choice Home Warranty issued their replacement cost. This cost was unacceptable and I challenged their figure. After some negotiation I was offered an increased settlement amount. I still balked at their offer but I was told to take it or repair my old microwave. I finally accepted their amount, even though it is still well below what it will cost me to replace the unit. I might add that the existing microwave has the convection feature and I want to replace with same features. The cost that I will receive also does not include any removal, disposal or installation costs. At this time I am debating whether I will continue with Choice Home Warranty or consider other options."

FAQs for appliance (microwave oven) installation and replacement projects in Missouri-city, MO

A pro can finish the job in one to three hours. Countertop models are the quickest, but built-in, drawer, and over-the-range units take longer because the installer may need to run a new outlet, modify cabinets, or add venting. Any add-ons can push the timeline closer to the three-hour mark. Hiring a licensed installer ensures the wiring is safe and the appliance operates at peak performance.

Because an over-the-range microwave doubles as a range hood, it needs proper venting. You can opt for a recirculating model that filters and recirculates air back into the kitchen, or a ducted unit that exhausts outdoors. Are you unsure which route suits your cooking style? Ask your installer for guidance before making a purchase.

Only microwaves labeled “over-the-range” have the built-in venting and lighting that’s necessary for safe, code-compliant use above a stove. Countertop models don’t have those safeguards. Before you swipe your card, have a licensed microwave installer confirm you’re choosing the right unit for the space and ensure compliance with local codes.

It’s best not to install a countertop microwave in your cabinets. Countertop models aren’t designed for use in an enclosed cabinet, and blocking those vents can trap moisture or even create a fire hazard. A built-in or drawer microwave is designed for tight spaces. Run your plans by an installer to make sure you’re buying the right style for the spot.

You don’t need an electrician if the outlet already meets the microwave’s power needs and sits in the right spot. In that case, you’re good to go ahead with the installation. If the outlet is undersized, outdated, or too far away, hire a licensed electrician to install a new one and ensure everything is code-compliant.

With routine care, most microwaves last between five and 10 years. To help them reach their maximum lifespan, wipe up spills immediately, wash the grease filter periodically, avoid using metal dishware, and close the door gently. Those simple habits reduce malfunctions and keep the appliance running smoothly for the long haul.
