"Paul Swann evaluated our foundation problem and referred us to an engineer who provided a detailed repair plan. Unfortunately, the nature and scope of the proposed repair plan was outside the parameters of what Northern Basement System's themselves could provide. We appreciated their honesty and have been looking for a contractor to take on the project."

"We had used Fuller when we built the house in 1988 and they had come highly recommended then. I had the estimator, Jeff, give me 3 different scenarios for new systems. Although the one I chose was the most expensive, it will be most efficient as well. The use of propane vs. oil cost in the Northeast is anyones guess at this point but one thing is sure. The on demand hot water means the boiler will only use fuel when there is a need not all year long to keep it at temperature within the boiler. Another plus is that the boiler is pretty much silent. They also installed a new style water softener and water filter which had been omitted by oversight in 1988. They were respectful, quick and showed up when they said they would. They are coming back this month to install the pressure tank which is 20+ years old and that should be it."

"I called 4 different companies and only 2 companies showed up to quote the lawn job. Key Landscaping replied and Steve was very prompt and professional and had a great knowledge of all aspects of lawn and irrigation. I felt completely confident in him and his crew which in fact proved, I definitely chose the right person for the job!! The crew showed up when promised and it only took a total of two days from start to completion of the job. I was very impressed with the results and Steve even took the time to explain to me the operation of the irrigation controller and made several trips to my home to check on the progress of the lawn to make sure everything was progressing the way it was suppose to be. I would highly recommend this awesome, professional company to everyone that was looking to just spruce up their lawn to the complication of a complete lawn overhaul!! Simply the BEST! Thanks Steve <br />"

"I had the company that put our basement water-proofing system (not VT Concrete) in and they came out promptly and charged to actually do nothing.  They recommended the Santa Fe dehumidifier at a cost of $2400.  Checking online I found that Roy's company charged $1700 and would install it for free.  He was prompt, knowledgeable and showed us what the other company should have done.  The other company kept wanting to sell us things and kept mentioning work they could do.  Roy was helpful in educating us about the system (we bought the house after it was put in).  They also confirmed what we thought, that the other company put the drainage system so close to the house that the water was actually just being recycled into it!  I will have them do our follow-up yearly system check.  <br />"

FAQs for basement drainage channels installation projects in Montpelier, VT

Expect a well-built French drain to last 30 to 40 years. By channeling both surface- and ground-water away from your foundation, the system relieves hydrostatic pressure and helps prevent costly structural damage. Choose a pipe with a quality cloth filter to keep sediment out and extend the drain’s life. A quick annual inspection and routine cleanouts will keep water flowing freely, ensuring the system continues to protect your home for years to come.

Most French drains sit two feet below grade, but depth ultimately depends on the problem you’re solving. For puddling rainwater or snowmelt, a shallow curtain drain at lawn level often does the trick. To handle rising groundwater, pros dig deeper, down to the footing, and run the pipe beneath the basement slab. A drainage contractor will determine the optimal depth for your specific soil conditions and water issues.

A properly installed interior French drain captures water at the slab, channels it to a sump pit, and directs it safely outside, preventing basement floods before they occur. Because the pipe sits just under the floor edge, a plumber can reach it easily for cleaning or repairs. Pairing the drain with a reliable sump pump gives you the best long-term protection.

Hire a contractor who installs drainage systems every day—typically a foundation specialist, drainage contractor, experienced landscaper, or plumber with waterproofing experience. These pros understand slope, soil, and local codes, and they have the equipment to trench safely around utilities. Ask for references and photos of recent jobs to be sure they can design a system that keeps water off your foundation for decades.

Once the drain is in, patch the yard by reseeding bare spots or replacing plants the crew removed. Inside, look for ways to add value—finishing the basement or upgrading interior waterproofing while the space is open often costs less now than later. Schedule a quick annual checkup to flush sediment and confirm the pipe and sump pump are clear. Consistent maintenance ensures the drain functions properly and protects your investment.

Most policies don’t cover the cost of repairing a French drain itself, but they may provide coverage for water damage if the system fails. Coverage varies by insurer, so be sure to read the fine print or contact your agent before any issues arise. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, consider a separate flood policy to close the gap. Knowing your coverage in advance helps you budget for repairs and avoid unexpected costs.
