"I know that Eric, the owner, will have a rebuttal for everything I say here, but I’ve decided to submit this review anyway, since I have nothing but the truth to offer from my direct experience. Since I am currently dealing with limited mobility, I reached out to Marlowe Landscaping for their services. Having invested nearly $8,000 in his landscaping business, I feel I had a right to expect quality product and performance. I do not feel I received either. (1) When we originally discussed the plan for my yard, one of the most important things for me was to ensure that nothing but freeze-hardy plants would be planted in my yard, and this was emphasized on at least 3 occasions. As it turned out, 10 plants were not freeze hardy and succumbed to the freeze we had last winter. Some of them came back several months later, but, in the meantime, those areas were quite ugly. Eric later came to check out my garden and made a commitment to replace the 6 Java White Copperleaf and 4 Pink Picotee Copperleaf shrubs that were not freeze hardy. (2) Eric was asked to order Sprinter Boxwoods (Buxus microphylla) for the 3 beds across the front of my home. Unfortunately, 28 shrubs were planted which turned out not to be Sprinters, but rather the cultivar Carissa Macrocarpa boxwoods. One of the boxwoods died, and because they were not currently available from his grower, I ordered one from Home Depot. When it arrived, I was shocked -- it was absolutely nothing like the ones planted here. I asked Eric to contact his grower about this discrepancy and was told that his grower said they were Sprinters, and that’s what I got. Since I couldn’t just stick this actual Sprinter in with the non-Sprinter boxwoods, I asked his crew to remove one from the center at the front corner, replace the one that died, and plant the Sprinter I ordered in its place in the center of this small circular area. The crew planted it on the outer edge. 3) The crew had initially planted 25 Encore Azaleas throughout the backyard. General instructions for planting azaleas are that they should be planted with the root ball only slightly above soil level and mulched, and I had simply asked that some of the readily available surrounding mulch material (pine needles, leaves, etc.) be raked in over the surrounding plants. After the crew finished and departed, I discovered that several azaleas were quite obviously sitting much too high (some were more than 3 inches high), and most were not mulched at all. Obviously, his crew did not respect my wishes, or perhaps they didn’t even listen. I contacted Eric and was told his crew was busy. By the time they returned to tend to this issue, several plants were already lost and some were struggling to survive. Even with my watering every other day, several azaleas were obviously not going to make it. When the same crew finally did return, they were to also plant an additional 11 azaleas that I had ordered some time ago. Even with my emphasis to plant the azaleas only slightly above soil level, most of these shrubs were neither well planted, nor well mulched. This crew was, in my opinion, certainly not worth the $75 (each) per hour that I was charged. Sadly, I have lost 15 plants (so far), with a value of over $825, and several more appear to be dying as I write this review. (4) In addition to that issue, Eric’s crew planted 28 Summer Sunset Jasmine plants (@ $8.50, for a total of $238) throughout the backyard. I can barely find 6 of them. (5) I recently asked Eric if he could have his crew come and move the Sprinter Boxwood from the outer edge to the center of the corner bed (also sent photo), and he replied that he would have to “respectfully pass on any further work” for me. So I have basically been dumped, leaving much unfinished business, and that is that. He has since sent me a check in the amount of a meager $108, as if that is sufficient to make up for my loss. Eric’s poor customer relations and condescending attitude only add to my unpleasant experience with Marlowe Landscaping"

"Josh and his crew came out the other day and inspected my system which was only 5 months old and not functioning properly. He was able to get us up and running properly in a short period of time. System now runs beautifully. I will use his services again in the future."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Palm Bay, FL

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
