"We hired Brian to complete a full deck tear out and rebuild. He was responsive, budget-minded, on-time (7 am), and completed our project in a timely manner. He and his assistant built an amazing, high-quality deck. Their work was impeccable. We would highly recommend Brian and his team for any deck work you might need. We will enjoy this deck for years to come."

"WOW. <br /> I thought my 30 year old redwood deck wasn't salvageable, but Rupert convinced me to do so.  He was very prompt & reliable & knowledgeable and everything went as planned.    A real pleasure to work with, especially if you prefer texting over e-mails!! <br /> I thought it was going to need replacement, a cost of $20,000 using a wood/plastic composite.  I am glad I didn't spend all that money- I would have had a plastic deck (Trex )that would scratch/warp/stain/turn to plastic-dust ( according to reviews at http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/trex_composite_decking.html)  <br /> Instead, I have a sturdy splinter free redwood deck and $18,000 still in my pocket.  Environmentally I saved as well, by 'fixing & reusing rather than buying/manufacturing plastics that would end up un-decomposed in a landfill one day. <br /> If you want a facelift on your old deck- Summit Deck Doctors is the way to go. <br /> If you think your deck is dying and needs to be buried & replaced, don't do so without asking Summit Deck Doctors to resuscitate it. <br />"

"I had them paint the entire interior of a 3 bedroom 2-1/2 bath home. Proper preparation is important. They were careful and accurate with their masking and protection of surfaces not to be painted, splattered, or over-sprayed. They filled nail holes, nicks, and cracks in the walls and trim and primed old enamel paint. Painting was smooth without thin spots or drips, runs, etc. They started on time and finished quickly on schedule. They left the house clean."

"Karol is very nice and easy to work with. He pays attention to details and will actually go to the site to check the condition of my front porch. He would also call me to discuss the repairing options and materials which we could use to save us money. He charges a reasonable price for a good quality job. We are quite happy with our front porch's new look. I would highly recommend Herman Construction as they are reliable and trustworthy. We will definitely come back to Karol again if we need help in the future."

"Javier Flores was one of the best contractors I’ve ever worked with. He was responsive, detailed, was willing to listen to what we had to say, and kept us informed all along the way. His work and that of his crew was exemplary. We even asked him to do something extra at the end and he was happy to do it. Our deck is beautiful and we’re so happy with it."

"1. Our old wood siding was cracking and peeling in several spots, so we finally decided it was time to upgrade. We went with James Hardie plank siding through Imperia Roofing &amp; Exteriors. Julian managed the project and made everything pretty straightforward. They replaced the siding, handled the window trim work, and finished with fresh exterior paint. Big improvement overall and the place feels much more updated now."

"Number one in communications and top attention in details. We worked with Geico Builders to build our addition, ADU and install pavers on the front of the house. Overall the process took us almost one year they were delays from the city of Oakland on approval plans despite that Victor went above and beyond and smooth all process once they got to actual building. He work hard to make progress easy on our addition especially with tough Inspectors. The quality of our new ADU well-built, and the bathroom has a great tile work with precise attention to details. Their price was not the cheapest one but for the amount of time and quality of work it’s very well deserved, we feel like we got good value for the money we paid. We do recommend Geico Builders and especially Victor to all who is looking for quality work."

"This would have been 5-stars across the board except for a request that was not implemented—after I asked for it two or three times verbally and in email. Partially my mistake too, I signed off on proposal and didn’t catch that my construction detail call-out was missing on plans. So make sure every detail is spelled out on Proposal & Contact form! Do not rely upon memory of estimator/sales manager to add custom build requests. Other than that, 70’ long fence with gate looks nice and price is fair. Workers and estimator all friendly. I can still recommend this company."

"We have been pleased to work with Yari and Guy at LeCut Construction. We had an old wooden deck that needed to be replaced with fire-resistant materials as we live in a Wildland Urban Interface area. We were promised that the new deck would look similar to the old one and meet current building codes. The LeCut team delivered! The project was difficult, due to the angles on the multi-level deck and stairs, being on a hillside, working with the challenges of the fire-resistant materials, as well as our exacting requirements. The whole LeCut crew worked closely with us to solve the challenges and give us a high-quality finished product. Yari and Guy were a pleasure to work with as they were always responsive, friendly, and helpful. "

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Palo Alto, CA

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
