"My sewage grinder was backing up and spewing out the vent in the cover. I suspected a float that turns the pump on was defective. Charles, the owner, removed the cover and activated the pump using the manual switch in the control box. That verified the pump was okay. He then washed out the inside of the grinder using a garden hose and had me then turn on numerous inside faucets (bathtubs, sinks, etc) to fill the tank again to verify if the pump came on by itself, which it did, and then shutoff by itself, as it should.
All this time he was explaining to me how the grinder works. Quite simple, actually. He said it was probably just a stuck float that failed to turn on the pump. All was functioning correctly. He buttoned up the unit and left. A half hour was all it took. I was relieved it wasn't something more serious.
