"excellent. from the moment of contact, Chuck was exemplary. Above Grade covers all of your inspection needs. Chuck responded before any other inspector and was able to schedule our appointment within the week. i immediately told Chuck that i planned to treat our inspection as an educational moment and he basically turned it into a class. he explained his notes thoroughly and why they mattered. he made it a point to discuss common emergencies and how to halt them. he recommended a fantastic book that breaks down how home systems work. i was very inquisitive and he really seemed to enjoy sharing his knowledge. our appointment was at 1230 on a Wednesday and our initial report was a sent the very next morning. Radon results and Water are all i had to wait for. Chuck has continued to answer my questions about the results and has remained amazingly polite and professional. he has been exceptionally helpful and kind. he appears to truly love what he does. he treats you like a friend. i strongly recommend Above Grade for your home inspection. you will not be disappointed."

"Lance made the whole process seamless and worry-free. From discovery of my homes elevated radon levels through system installation and completion of post-installation testing I felt that I was in good hands at all times. The cost of work was competitive with other quotes I requested, but the personal attention and responsiveness I received was truly the most valuable part of my experience. It was also welcome to find a company that values innovation and stays current with latest technology. No other company I spoke with offered a rapid testing alternative with time-based readings of my homes recorded radon levels. Thank you Lance for putting my family back to ease."

"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Chris performed a radon test and radon mitigation which brought the radon level down to 0.2. Chris is the owner and installer and he gave me a date 2 days away since I wanted this done immediately and he had a cancellation. He was considerate, courteous and quite knowledgeable about radon and how high exposure for an extended period can cause physical Illnesses. Price was $150. for the test and $1,500. for the installation of the mitigation system."

"As soon as I requested a quote from Angie's List, Mike called me within minutes. He was very transparent when he informed me of the type of services and the costs associated and even suggested forgoing some of his services based on the location of the home. As a first time homebuyer he understood exactly what I needed. He event went beyond by giving me helpful tips outside his scope of work. In the end I asked for a home inspection, termite inspection and radon test as he had a summer deal for three services. During the day of the inspection, he arrived an hour early and inspected the home thoroughly. He even went inside hard to reach places and ensure proper photos of the premises. Throughout it all he made sure to explain to us his findings and answer all of our questions. He produced an 84 pages long inspection report mostly filled with great photos. At the end, he even gave us goodies! His professionalism, thoroughness, and expertise would make me hire Mike again."

FAQs for radon gas abatement projects in Pleasant Valley, NY

The only way to know whether your home or water supply contains radon is to schedule a professional test. A qualified radon inspector will collect samples, deliver lab-verified results, and explain the findings for $150 to $800. Once you know your exact levels, you and your radon mitigation pro can choose the right system and tackle the problem before it affects your family’s health.

Both roles tackle radon, but they focus on different steps. Inspectors test your home, interpret the results, and determine whether levels exceed EPA guidelines. Mitigation pros design and install the system that lowers those levels. Some companies do both, but the skills and equipment differ, so always verify that the person you hire is properly certified for the specific service you need.

Installing a mitigation unit fixes radon problems by reducing indoor gas levels to established safe standards. A system designed and installed by a mitigation expert, tailored to your home's specific layout and foundation, guarantees effective radon reduction. This expert installation ensures consistent performance over time while safeguarding your indoor air quality.

Open windows and doors do not reduce radon levels because they trigger a pressure imbalance that draws radon-laden air into your home. This practice fails to control radon concentration and can even worsen the issue. An active suction mitigation system provides a proven, safe, and effective solution to reliably reduce radon levels.

Radon mitigation systems generally last between 10 and 30 years, depending on system type and maintenance. Passive systems endure the longest because they have no moving parts, whereas active systems, which use a fan, require fan replacement every 5 to 10 years. System components, such as PVC pipes, seals, and fittings, can remain effective for decades when paired with periodic inspections and proper maintenance.

Radon mitigation systems consume between 300 and 3,000 kWh of electricity per year, depending on fan size and system design. On average, an active radon fan draws 100 to 300 watts continuously, which translates to roughly 876 kWh annually, and adds $30 to $300 to your energy bill each year. Choosing a high-efficiency fan and ensuring tight sealing around pipes helps minimize these ongoing costs.
