"Paul was amazing to work with, as was his son. In Phase 1, they tore down the fence and deck, took the debris away, and built a clean, well-constructed fence in very little time and left everything absolutely clean. A few months later we had a pergola installed by another company. Paul had previously given us an estimate for a deck to fit the pergola that we felt very reasonable and he stayed within that estimate for the final construction. On the day they arrived on-site, we added an additional component not in the original bid and he immediately said he could do it, and charged an extremely reasonable price for the additional work. The actual deck is extremely well designed and well-crafted - very professional, and blends beautifully with our old craftsman-style home. He and his son were hard, expert workers. I've had other contractors that stood around or took long lunches. In comparison, Paul and his son worked through a hailstorm and cold weather. They accomplished the whole deck in three days from start to finish, and left the site completely clean when they left. We really can't recommend Paul enough. They were professional, courteous, excellent workers. Their work was very solid and well-done. We would hope to hire them again for any construction we had in mind."

Small jobs welcome

"Our deck was old and in bad shape. It needed a major update. Andrew and his crew did a great job. They were committed from the start to making it special. Even with weather, supply chain and other issues they maintained and created an amazing deck for our family to enjoy. Any changes made during the project were discussed in detail and not performed until agreed upon. Communicating with Andrew was easy. From the quotation process through the installation, I felt we were always on the same page. Andrew was hands on and always answered or returned my calls immediately."

Customers say: Super punctual

"If you need work done on your house, hire Rob. I can’t sing his praises loudly enough. Two years ago, my husband and I purchased a house that is 100 years old. It is in decent shape, but we wanted to do a lot of work to turn it into our dream house. Rob has been our go-to man throughout this extensive process, and we can’t imagine having done it without him. In fact, without him, I don’t think it could have gotten done, or rather it would have been MUCH harder (me having to find people for each job), and slower. Rob can do everything. He has replaced every door in our house, all door knobs, hinges and other hardware, all lighting fixtures. He has updated the closets and replaced closet doors. He has replaced our front door and the entire frame. He took out and then covered over this weird door that made no sense and that I wanted to simply be a wall. We want to renovate both bathrooms, and he will do this, and I know he will complete them in a timely manor and that his work will"

"WE LOVE JOSH! We initially hired him to remodel a kitchen after another contractor botched the job. Josh fixed everything and got everything finished the way it should been in the first place! We have since hired him for two more jobs: pouring a concrete driveway extension for RV parking, and replacing some siding and painting the entire exterior of the house. Josh is meticulous and clearly takes pride in his work, he is super easy to work with! I HIGHLY recommend Josh, we will continue to hire him for all of our construction needs!"

"Excellent experience all around. The crew had to fix dry rot on the house first. They were very skilled at that. The second crew built the decks. Both crews were prompt, proficient and pleasant. They did all of the work in the cold pouring rain and then in the snow. The decks are sturdy and beautiful. Micah, the owner is professional and very easy to deal with. He was very responsive to my inquiries by phone or email."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Portland, OR

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
