"Paul was always fast to respond with messages and answer all of our questions. He was polite, showed up and left on time, left the work area clean when he was finished, and did a complete tear down and rebuild in only 2 days! HIs bid was the lowest but his work is excellent. We will definitely call Paul (who had his son working with him) again for any of our future jobs. Highly highly highly recommend!"

We hired a crane to remove a hot tub and to put it back on the new deck.

"We hired Steller Construction and Remodeling LLC to build a deck/Catio in May 2024. Micha (the Owner) was straightforward to work with and reach throughout the process. We are retired and live on a set income. Even though we had some lower estimates from other companies, we felt so confident with Micha's (the owner) ideas that, after looking at other reviews/images of this company, we decided to go with Steller Construction. Micha's team was absolutely amazing !!! Ray, our project's lead employee/carpenter, was very knowledgeable, considerate, and had an unbelievable work ethic! The rest of the team did an awesome job as well. They communicated well throughout the whole job always checking in with us to make sure they were doing what we wanted. They were professional and very polite everyday. At the end of each they completely cleaned up the area. We have worked with one other construction company and a roofing company when we did some remodling on our last home and did not have a good experience with either company. We were very nervous about having to go through another bad experience. We were so pleasantly surprised that Steller Construction turned out to be a great decision! Our deck/catio is beautiful and we love it! If you have any construction/remodeling needs contact Micah at Steller ConstructionI you will not be disappointed!"

Small jobs welcome

"Needed some stair repairs in our old house. Saw HHC on Anji and through Google. Called them up. Got a quick call response: 1. Came out that day to check things out & give an estimate. 2. Got an estimate and we settled on a date a couple days later. (While Josh said they could do it right away we couldn't.) 3. They came, they saw, they informed, they fixed, they cleaned up, 4. The stairs look (and work) wonderful. 5. The cost was less than the estimate. So, I'm thinking WHAT IN HELL KIND OF CONSTRUCTION COMPANY IS THIS? 1. Nice guys 2. Highly skilled in their work/field. 3. Informative on any issues during the work. 4. Did what they said they would do. 5. Fixed the stair issues. 6. While we were writing the check (less than the estimate), One of them was tightening door knobs, door hinges. I said, "Hey, you guys..." and Josh said, "We fix things". What kind of construction company? THE BEST! (One thing I would recommend: If it's inside work, you might consider some ear plugs)."

"Ricardo and his crew did a great job completely rehabbing a three bedroom. Every interior wall and ceiling was painted. Doors were replaced, ceiling exhaust fans installed, floor covering repair, electrical and plumbing etc. Through 11 change orders Ricardo kept track of it all and pushed to keep the project done on time. If I had more work to be done I would call Santi’s Construction immediately. Highly recommended !"

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Portland, OR

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
