"I am pleased to highly recommend Cole Electric for your electrical work. This week, I suddenly found myself without power in the garage and the apartment above the garage. This not only meant that I could not use my cars, but also that the heat pump, water heater, and two refrigerators in the garage and apartment did not work in what were the 3 coldest days and nights in Hampton Roads this year. I called upon the team at Cole Electric who promptly returned my call, and set up an appointment at a mutually agreeable time. The day of the appointment, Andy called to better understand the problem, so that the technician, Dylan, had the right parts on his truck when he arrived. Dylan was absolutely top notch. He performed a diagnostic of the two junction boxes in the house and garage, tightened all the wires and replaced some circuit breakers that clearly were the wrong type. The process took less than two hours and he explained everything he was doing. He left after double checking that everything worked in the garage and apartment. The next day, Andy texted to make sure everything worked. This was exceptional service and follow up. I am sure to use them again for all my electrical needs. They were prompt, efficient and reasonably priced. I have nothing but praise for their work."

"Norva Electric act quickly when I told them that half of the house didn’t have electricity, He was very understanding, he did trouble shoot the problem with the breaker and a socket and re- wired a outdoor light fixture. I was very please with his work. I t didn’t take long at all. I would definitely be calling Norva again for future work."

"Byron Baker and a helper called ahead of time, arrived promptly (within the original three-hour window and about 20 minutes after the call) and reviewed my concerns. He then explained what he had to do and how he would go about it. Please note, of 4 companies that I called, Mr. Electric of Chesapeake was the only one willing to come out a provide a free estimate. Since the estimate was better than the phone quotes I received, I authorized him to proceed with the work. He began by troubleshooting the doorbell system. He found the following: found no power on secondary / low-voltage side of transformer. There was 120 V on primary side. Found wire to transformer not connected. (In layman’s terms, the transformer had been shorted out). Removed and reinstalled Ring doorbell and found that the diode had not been installed properly. Installed new transformer and corrected wire connections and restored power to the doorbell system."

"Highly recommend. Had a detached metal garage installed and needed sub panel, wiring, receptacles, lights, etc. Brad understood the project, thoroughly evaluated the job site, quoted fairly, and executed to satisfaction. He also communicated in a timely and professional manner which is honestly difficult to come by."

"My husband found James about two years ago and he and his team are reliable, professional, and a joy to work with. Many electricians are difficult to get in touch with, but James is always responsive and friendly. No matter the size of the job, he is willing to support and his prices are reasonable and his work is excellent. We're so glad we found TriUs Electric and we plan to continue working with James and his team for a long time."

"Got the additional power outlet installed in the bathroom within 3 days of my request. Jason came and gave me available options and I chose the least expensive option without having to run new wiring from the panel. I will call Jason again for future electrical jobs."

FAQs for electrical wiring or panel upgrade projects in Portsmouth, VA

While homeowners with substantial electrical knowledge might technically attempt a subpanel installation, most local building departments require permits and inspections for this type of work. Professional electricians understand local code requirements, can obtain necessary permits, and ensure the installation meets safety standards. Given the significant safety risks associated with incorrect electrical work, most homeowners benefit from hiring a licensed professional.

A standard subpanel installation takes an average of four to eight hours. This timeframe may extend if you're installing multiple subpanels or adding specialized circuits like those for spa equipment. Factors such as difficult access points, complex wiring paths, or permit processing times can also affect the overall project duration.

Adding a subpanel doesn't directly reduce electricity consumption or lower your utility bills. A subpanel simply redistributes power from your main panel to additional circuits. However, organizing your electrical system more efficiently may help prevent overloaded circuits and the associated problems. For actual cost savings, consider energy-efficient appliances and lighting instead.

The appropriate subpanel size depends on your specific electrical requirements. Consider the number and type of devices you'll be powering, potential future needs, and the capacity of your main electrical panel. An electrician can perform a load calculation to determine the most suitable amperage rating for your situation, ensuring you have adequate power without overpaying for unnecessary capacity.

A main electrical panel connects directly to your utility's power supply and contains your home's primary service disconnect. It distributes electricity throughout your entire house. A subpanel, by contrast, receives power from the main panel and redistributes it to a specific area of your home. Think of the main panel as the primary distribution point and the subpanel as a secondary branch that extends your electrical system's reach.

While electrical upgrades aren't as immediately visible as kitchen or bathroom renovations, they can contribute to your home's functionality and safety. Prospective buyers often appreciate updated electrical systems that can accommodate modern power demands. A properly installed subpanel that provides additional capacity for workshops, home offices, or future expansions could be an attractive feature for certain buyers, though the direct impact on home value varies by market.
