"Rick came over and addressed each and every issue that had been raised by the other contractor. He said none of these concerns interfered with the safety or integrity of our roof, and explained everything in a way that a layperson such as me would understand. In short, Rick said our roof is in great shape and doesn’t need to have anything done at all. He could have simply agreed with the other contractor and racked up more business for himself if he had wanted to do so; instead he didn’t charge me a cent for his time and effort although I would have been very happy to pay for the peace of mind he gave me. I’m happy to recommend RC Roofing for anyone who needs to get an honest expert opinion."

"Sequoia Roofing did an excellent job from start to finish. Once again it is proven to me "you get what you pay for". I got multiple estimates. Sequoia was not the least expensive. Mike Rochholz answered all my questions before, during and after. Communication was clear. Helped me choose the replacement tile. I knew what was going to be done and when I was on their work calendar six weeks ahead. Started on Monday and finished on Friday. Attention to details and professionalism of crew earn high praise, too."

"I dealt with Leon De Anda for my roof work. Leon was honest and professional and very informative about what could be done with my roof. He offered me a few options and also asked me if there were anything specific I wanted done. I basically described what I wanted and he curtailed his bid to what I was looking for at the best price. I liked the fact that he was honest and straight forward without playing any games or try and screw me over. In the end, I decided to get a whole new roof, down to even getting all new plywood. The men who came to work on the roof were competent and professional. They went to great lengths to only bother me when it was necessary. Everyday they made a mess but at the end of the day they would always clean it up. I thought they were very professional. Leon was not at my house everyday but he was always just a phone call away. He was very accessible. Once the work was completed, Leon and myself walked around the property and inspected the work. He made sure that I was completed satisfied before everything was finalized. Protecta Roofing made a big impression on me based on the way they started and completed this job. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to get some roof work done or even some general contracting work done."

"Erik came out and described the project and what they would take care of and also talked to me about roofing material and the quality of material they would use.  He came out again with roofing samples so I could pick the one that would match my HOA requirements.  His crew completed the work on schedule and did a wonderful job on the roof as well as a great job on cleanup.  I highly recommend Excalibur Roofing.

"

In April of 2014 we decided to go with solar and contracted Secure Home Improvements to install a solar system, re-roof and build a waterproof second story (16’x16’) deck.  Initially everything went well. As the job prolonged, cleanup became a bit sloppy. I have three kids (at the time one was 6, the other 4, and the third was not in the picture) so needless to say any debris in the backyard was unacceptable.  Prior to the job they made an apparent mistake in the wood order, resulting in a pile of wood sitting in my yard during the entire construction.  At the end, when the deck was completed and the wood pile was never touched, I was informed of their mistake.  Not a big deal, but like I mentioned above it was a safety hazard because I had two young kids running around.

The roof installation seemed to go smoothly; good hard-working, efficient, friendly employees. More about the roof later.

The solar installation went smooth as well except there were problems with city inspections. On two separate occasions, inspections that were scheduled by Secure for the City to inspect the solar installation were canceled. One, because Secure no-showed, then on the second the Secure representative did not have the proper paper work to conduct the inspection.  The third time was a charm, I guess.  Because of this delay, the commencement of the solar system was delayed and I had to pay an extra SDG&E bill, which Dave reluctantly covered - thank you Dave.

The deck looks great, with only a few issues which I will cover later.  The deck could have been completed sooner but there were several days that the crew did not show up. As I mentioned above, the wood that was left during the entire job was nothing more than inconvenient.  My issues with the deck are as follows. Firstly, there is not enough pitch for the water to drain properly during rain or just clean up (hosing off, etc.). Water puddles in several spots and does not run off.  I brought this issue up with Secure but was told according to code, it was “ok” to have water puddle as long as the water evaporated within 48 hours (or something along those lines).  My issue is the sitting water, in time it will do damage.  I did not pay for an “ok” job.

My second issue is with the stairs that were built leading up to the deck. A section of them are too steep. I have had several kids and adults slip and fall, one small child had to go to the emergency room.  We are very grateful that the family this happened to are very close friends as they informed us that for several months they were contacted by attorney’s to sue but declined the opportunity.  During the construction of the stairs, Tony the foreman assured me they would not be that bad and if any issue would arise, I could call Secure and they would remedy the problem (more on that later).  I also brought this issue up to Dave the day he came to inspect the job at completion, he assured me they were perfect and brushed it off.

Prior to commencing all work I had to get a loan for the solar system installation; to make a long story short, there was a problem on the monthly loan payment.  It was more than was promised by secure, so again to Secure’s credit Dave stepped up and discounted the price to meet the agreed-upon monthly payment.  By then, the loan paper work had already been done and the payment was to be distributed with three checks pre-filled by the bank. So Dave and I agreed that he would cut me a check for the discounted amount, which was approximately $1,200.00, instead of cancelling and opening a new loan.

As the job reached completion I called Secure to remind them of the agreement, so that when they came to collect final payment they would also have my check for $1,200.  When Secure came to collect final payment they did not have my check and I was told to call the office.  When I called the office I spoke with their office manager Lynette, and was told that the $1,200 had already been discounted and if I knew how to do simple math I could figure it out (pretty rude if you ask me).  So I attempted to call Dave to explain the issue that yes, the discount had been applied on paper, but the pre-filled checks still reflected the original amount prior to the discount.  Dave told me he would not get involved; to deal with his office manager, and he was arriving to a customer’s home and pretty much hung up on me.

So finally, once they did the “simple” math and realized their mistake they cut the check for the $1,200 and we settled up.

The job was completed in July 2014. In December of 2014, I discovered a leak where the deck and roof meet.  I called Secure to schedule an appointment to fix the leak.  I was told because it was an outside leak, it was not a priority and they scheduled me an appointment to inspect, not repair, in January.  Once the inspection was done towards the end of January, the leak was finally fixed.  During the first appointment for the leak, I brought to Daniel’s attention the issue with the sitting water on the deck, and also about the stairs being too steep.

Nothing was done about the deck or the stairs.  Somebody did come to inspect the deck but was told nothing could be done.  I never heard back about the stairs.

In Nov or Dec of 2015 I discovered another leak, this time in my son’s bedroom.  I called Secure and let them know that my 16-17 month old roof had another leak.  They sent a young man, I don’t recall his name, to inspect the roof. He did not know the difference between a tile and composite shingle.  How do I know this?, well I was called by Secure and asked if I had tile or shingles for the leak estimate.  They provided an estimate even though I let Secure know it should be a warranty repair because it was a new roof.  So, of course more time passed while they worked out whether it should be a warranty repair or not.  Finally, it was repaired.

During this roof repair, I contacted a project manager about the stairs (instead of relying on my complaint about the stairs getting passed on) although pictures were taken and a phone call was made to the office by the Secure roofer.  After several weeks, I contacted via e-mail the project manager to remind him of the issue. I was assured that he and Tony, the foreman who built the stairs, would come out in January 2016 to inspect the stairs.  It is now June 27, 2016 and have not heard back (I have emails showing this exchange).

From January until now, June 2016, I’ve made several phone calls to Secure and was told someone would call me, but never did. Instead I had to keep calling to ensure this time, this issue won’t get pushed aside.

I finally had Tony come by and he agreed something had to be done.  I am now waiting for the “something” to happen.

I feel I have to add that the roof that was replaced was an old tar and gravel roof, easily over 15 years old and never had a leak.

It has been two years since we went on-line with the solar system and couldn’t be happier.  The performance and production is almost exactly what we expected.  We have not had to pay any electric usage, although we intended to have extra capacity for future projects such as pool/jacuzzi, and we are pretty much breaking even.

The appearance and usefulness of the deck are great, the only downfall is the puddling water and hazardous stairs.

Please feel free to contact me, Secure or perspective customers.

"Check up went great, they showed us pictures of our roof before, and after they had gone through and done light repairs (nailing down flashing, patching small holes). Very friendly service, and they gave us the confidence we needed about our roof as first -time home buyers. We made it through the winter with no leaks or problems."

FAQs for natural slate roofing installation and replacement projects in Potrero, CA

A slate roof features thin tiles of natural stone installed over a solid deck and underlayment. Formed under intense heat and pressure, slate is exceptionally durable and delivers a distinctive, high-end look. Because the material weighs far more than asphalt, most homes need added structural support before installation.

While upfront costs are higher and routine inspections are a must, many homeowners choose slate for its unmatched longevity and curb appeal.

Slate stands out for its 50- to 200-year life span, low maintenance, and classic aesthetic. It’s fire-resistant, energy-efficient, and often boosts resale value.

On the flip side, slate runs far more per square foot than asphalt, weighs up to four times as much, and demands a contractor who specializes in the material. Tiles can crack on impact, and repairs cost more because the work is slow and precise. If your budget and structure can handle it, slate delivers top-tier performance for generations.

Natural and synthetic slate aim for a premium, stone-like appearance, whereas asphalt focuses on affordability. Real slate runs $10 to $30 per square foot installed and lasts up to 200 years; synthetic slate costs $10 to $15 and tops out at 50 to 100 years.

Standard asphalt averages $3 to $8 per square foot and needs replacement every 20 to 30 years. If you want the slate look without the full price tag—or extra roof weight—synthetic is a solid middle ground.

With routine inspections and prompt repairs, a natural slate roof can last well beyond 100 years; some hard-slate installations reach the 200-year mark. Soft slate falls in the 50- to 125-year range, and synthetic products last 50 to 100 years.

Remember, flashing, fasteners, and the underlying structure may need attention sooner than the stone itself. Severe hail or fallen limbs can also shorten life span, so schedule periodic checkups with a slate-qualified roofer.

If you plan to stay in your home long term—or want a standout selling point—slate delivers strong value. Although installation costs are high, owners often recoup 60% to 70% at resale and enjoy lower replacement cycles than asphalt. The stone’s durability, energy efficiency, and timeless curb appeal also appeal to eco-conscious buyers because fewer roofs end up in landfills. Just be sure your framing can handle the weight and that you budget for occasional specialty repairs.

Skip the DIY climb if you have a slate roof. Slate may be tough against the weather, but a single misplaced step can crack a tile and create a leak path. The surface also turns slick when wet, upping the risk of injury. Professional crews use staging and hook ladders that spread weight across multiple slates, protecting both the roof and the worker. To inspect or repair slate, call a roofer who specializes in the material.
