"San Juan Pools in Valley Center put in the most beautiful pool and spa for us! Jon Mitchell is such a great guy and always followed through to make sure we were happy and that the job was done right. The price was super affordable and the pool turned out amazing; the pool is nestled between our boulders and they managed to build our spa in spite of some large underground rocks. Other pool companies tried to convince us to move the location, but Jon came through and built an even better pool and spa than we envisioned. Thank you Jon!!! I would have given you 10 stars if I could have!!!"

"We contacted California Smartscape to give us an estimate on redoing our front and back yards. They had been destroyed by putting a pool in and by a large tree in the front yard that damaged the hardscape. We spoke at length to Richard and Nick about our budget and our ideas for the yard. The proposal they came back with was within our budget and had all the elements we wanted. We were pleasantly surprised because we had contacted others and their proposals were way above budget and did not have the elements we wanted. The crews that came out to do the work were wonderful. They were professional, considerate and respectful. Steve was a great project manager who attended to things as they came up during the work. Ruben was a good crew supervisor. He had a good relationship with his workers. Now that our project is complete, we couldn’t be happier. The whole yard has been transformed into a natural landscape with easy to care for low water plants, low voltage LED lighting and drip irrigation. We even have a small artificial grass lawn in back! If you need landscape work, this is the company I would recommend."

"We are delighted with the work done by Modern Home Remodeling, to install a classy tiled shower, repaint the interior and replace carpets. Their project manager clearly listened to our needs and wants = to freshen rather than redesign, to keep the oak vanities and good-condition countertops, to correct small “problems” that we’d lived with for decades, and to focus on changes that we’ll enjoy in the ten years that we still plan to live in this home. The tiled shower transformed the shower experience, brought spaciousness to a small room, and was done by an accommodating and experienced crew. The project manager expedited the schedule, committing to a start date of February 20 but beginning the work a month earlier and finishing by February 28, 2023. He brought tile and carpet samples to the house, that both followed the earth tones in our home and created a light pattern-rich tiled shower. Our disruption and moving of personal items was minimized as the painting was done in four days and was followed three days later by a one-day carpet installation. Overall, this remodeling brought us upgrades that we already enjoy, a month of amicable and focused contractors, and efficient planning and execution by Modern Home Remodeling and its subcontractors. "We couldn’t be happier with the job Frank and his team did. After providing a vision of what we wanted, Frank facilitated the design of plans that exceeded our expectations. Moreover, seeing the design come to life was a thrill. Frank’s team is professional and committed to high quality work. Frank took on our project like it was his own yard and I was confident he had our best interests in mind throughout the process. I think the quality of his work is reflected in the price, so while it may be a bit higher than a competitor, I believe it is more than worth it. My family and friends can’t get enough of our yards and they couldn’t be more impressed with the job well done. With the job now complete, Frank continues to check in to ensure the irrigation is working efficiently and our plants are taken care of. I highly recommend Molina’s Exterior if you are serious about surrounding yourself with excellence."

In April of 2014 we decided to go with solar and contracted Secure Home Improvements to install a solar system, re-roof and build a waterproof second story (16’x16’) deck.  Initially everything went well. As the job prolonged, cleanup became a bit sloppy. I have three kids (at the time one was 6, the other 4, and the third was not in the picture) so needless to say any debris in the backyard was unacceptable.  Prior to the job they made an apparent mistake in the wood order, resulting in a pile of wood sitting in my yard during the entire construction.  At the end, when the deck was completed and the wood pile was never touched, I was informed of their mistake.  Not a big deal, but like I mentioned above it was a safety hazard because I had two young kids running around.

The roof installation seemed to go smoothly; good hard-working, efficient, friendly employees. More about the roof later.

The solar installation went smooth as well except there were problems with city inspections. On two separate occasions, inspections that were scheduled by Secure for the City to inspect the solar installation were canceled. One, because Secure no-showed, then on the second the Secure representative did not have the proper paper work to conduct the inspection.  The third time was a charm, I guess.  Because of this delay, the commencement of the solar system was delayed and I had to pay an extra SDG&E bill, which Dave reluctantly covered - thank you Dave.

The deck looks great, with only a few issues which I will cover later.  The deck could have been completed sooner but there were several days that the crew did not show up. As I mentioned above, the wood that was left during the entire job was nothing more than inconvenient.  My issues with the deck are as follows. Firstly, there is not enough pitch for the water to drain properly during rain or just clean up (hosing off, etc.). Water puddles in several spots and does not run off.  I brought this issue up with Secure but was told according to code, it was “ok” to have water puddle as long as the water evaporated within 48 hours (or something along those lines).  My issue is the sitting water, in time it will do damage.  I did not pay for an “ok” job.

My second issue is with the stairs that were built leading up to the deck. A section of them are too steep. I have had several kids and adults slip and fall, one small child had to go to the emergency room.  We are very grateful that the family this happened to are very close friends as they informed us that for several months they were contacted by attorney’s to sue but declined the opportunity.  During the construction of the stairs, Tony the foreman assured me they would not be that bad and if any issue would arise, I could call Secure and they would remedy the problem (more on that later).  I also brought this issue up to Dave the day he came to inspect the job at completion, he assured me they were perfect and brushed it off.

Prior to commencing all work I had to get a loan for the solar system installation; to make a long story short, there was a problem on the monthly loan payment.  It was more than was promised by secure, so again to Secure’s credit Dave stepped up and discounted the price to meet the agreed-upon monthly payment.  By then, the loan paper work had already been done and the payment was to be distributed with three checks pre-filled by the bank. So Dave and I agreed that he would cut me a check for the discounted amount, which was approximately $1,200.00, instead of cancelling and opening a new loan.

As the job reached completion I called Secure to remind them of the agreement, so that when they came to collect final payment they would also have my check for $1,200.  When Secure came to collect final payment they did not have my check and I was told to call the office.  When I called the office I spoke with their office manager Lynette, and was told that the $1,200 had already been discounted and if I knew how to do simple math I could figure it out (pretty rude if you ask me).  So I attempted to call Dave to explain the issue that yes, the discount had been applied on paper, but the pre-filled checks still reflected the original amount prior to the discount.  Dave told me he would not get involved; to deal with his office manager, and he was arriving to a customer’s home and pretty much hung up on me.

So finally, once they did the “simple” math and realized their mistake they cut the check for the $1,200 and we settled up.

The job was completed in July 2014. In December of 2014, I discovered a leak where the deck and roof meet.  I called Secure to schedule an appointment to fix the leak.  I was told because it was an outside leak, it was not a priority and they scheduled me an appointment to inspect, not repair, in January.  Once the inspection was done towards the end of January, the leak was finally fixed.  During the first appointment for the leak, I brought to Daniel’s attention the issue with the sitting water on the deck, and also about the stairs being too steep.

Nothing was done about the deck or the stairs.  Somebody did come to inspect the deck but was told nothing could be done.  I never heard back about the stairs.

In Nov or Dec of 2015 I discovered another leak, this time in my son’s bedroom.  I called Secure and let them know that my 16-17 month old roof had another leak.  They sent a young man, I don’t recall his name, to inspect the roof. He did not know the difference between a tile and composite shingle.  How do I know this?, well I was called by Secure and asked if I had tile or shingles for the leak estimate.  They provided an estimate even though I let Secure know it should be a warranty repair because it was a new roof.  So, of course more time passed while they worked out whether it should be a warranty repair or not.  Finally, it was repaired.

During this roof repair, I contacted a project manager about the stairs (instead of relying on my complaint about the stairs getting passed on) although pictures were taken and a phone call was made to the office by the Secure roofer.  After several weeks, I contacted via e-mail the project manager to remind him of the issue. I was assured that he and Tony, the foreman who built the stairs, would come out in January 2016 to inspect the stairs.  It is now June 27, 2016 and have not heard back (I have emails showing this exchange).

From January until now, June 2016, I’ve made several phone calls to Secure and was told someone would call me, but never did. Instead I had to keep calling to ensure this time, this issue won’t get pushed aside.

I finally had Tony come by and he agreed something had to be done.  I am now waiting for the “something” to happen.

I feel I have to add that the roof that was replaced was an old tar and gravel roof, easily over 15 years old and never had a leak.

It has been two years since we went on-line with the solar system and couldn’t be happier.  The performance and production is almost exactly what we expected.  We have not had to pay any electric usage, although we intended to have extra capacity for future projects such as pool/jacuzzi, and we are pretty much breaking even.

The appearance and usefulness of the deck are great, the only downfall is the puddling water and hazardous stairs.

Please feel free to contact me, Secure or perspective customers.

"Raul did a great job for us. He took over a bathroom remodel job that had been started by another contractor. We know contractors don't like to do this, but Raul was willing to take on the challenge! He was excellent at communicating with us throughout the project, and kept to the budget. We would definitely recommend him!"

FAQs for swimming pool in ground build or installation projects in Poway, CA

Yes, it is possible to build an above-ground infinity or zero-edge pool by raising the deck and surrounding poolscape to create a continuous water edge. This design produces a zero-edge effect when the pool structure is properly elevated. However, additional work to adjust the deck and haul extra dirt can increase labor and land preparation costs.

An infinity pool incurs higher expenses than a regular pool because its specialized design and engineered features demand extra materials and precise construction methods. The design modifications required for a true endless edge raise the overall cost by 20% to 50%. This increase reflects additional structural planning, enhanced finishes, and superior craftsmanship.

An infinity pool is designed with at least one edge over which water flows, creating the appearance of a vanishing edge that seamlessly merges with the surrounding landscape or horizon. The pool has an exposed wall that is slightly lower than the water level, allowing water to spill over into a catch basin below, where it is recirculated back into the pool.

Infinity pool construction requires a significant and defined time commitment. Concrete installations are completed within three to six months, vinyl projects within four to eight weeks, and fiberglass pool installations within two to four weeks. The overall timeline depends on the design complexity and the skill level of the contractor, with challenging conditions extending the project duration.

Infinity pools require additional maintenance compared to regular pools because their unique design requires constant water level monitoring to preserve the continuous overflow effect. The catch basin must be diligently cleaned to prevent debris accumulation, and the maintenance routine varies with pool materials—concrete surfaces need extra care to prevent algae growth, while fiberglass and vinyl demand less upkeep.
