"I am an architect building my personal residence. Oakmont is great to work with! Joe is experienced in many areas. He has a great attitude and really works hard. He is constructing a number of features on the house, including the 1,000 SF covered deck. I highly recommend Oakmont."

Small jobs welcome

"I cannot say enough good about Michael and his crew. Once they started the deck construction, they found significant water damage to the entire back of our house. Michael reassured us that their crew could handle the entire growing project, and that they did! They did an outstanding job with not only the deck but replaced all the damaged wood and reused our siding. They did a fantastic job. We love the deck! We would highly recommend them to anyone. Michael is a gem!"

"We had a great experience with John and the team at MSHS. They handled multiple projects for us in one visit, including replacing bathroom baseboards with PVC, repairing a soft spot in the floor, installing stair railings, fixing drywall, updating outlets, and sealing/caulking throughout. The team was professional, efficient, and clearly experienced. They worked quickly without cutting corners, and communication was excellent. We especially appreciated the attention to detail—they even took the time to get the right paint match so everything blended seamlessly. Everything looks clean, solid, and professionally done. We would absolutely use them again and highly recommend them!"

"Ethan and his team did an excellent job with our bathroom remodel. He provided clear expectations for the work and helped walk us through the process of assembling all the components for our new bathroom. What I most appreciated from Ethan in this process was the proactive communication about when we should expect each team member at our house and his frequent presence and oversight of their work. Ethan also did a nice job keeping track of any changes that impacted cost and both informing and obtaining approval before proceeding with those changes. The final product of the work is a beautiful bathroom at a reasonable price. I highly recommend ER Renovation and will be calling Ethan again when it is time to tackle the next project."

"Matt had great communication throughout the process. Anytime I had a question or needed clarification he was always available. In addition, I couldnâ t be more happy with the tile work he completed in our bathroom shower and flooring and appreciate his attention to detail. I will definitely recommend him."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Rathdrum, ID

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
