"First, the nightmare driveway: We bought the house new in 2002. In the first couple of years of construction in the sub, the builder had to demolish & replace 50+ driveways due to improper design & prep of the fill. Mine was to be replaced but the builder went toes up prior to replacing my drive. Within 2 years a couple of adjacent slabs had sunk in the middle of the slab noticeably and it only worsened from there. Fast forward to today. The HOA (never again) was on my case to fix the driveway or suffer fines.
As the concrete is 15 years old & spalled from the salt, I looked first at replacement. The single-car drive is not huge but I was still looking at a range of $2700-3500 to rip & replace. Being upside down as many of the houses in the area are, I didn't feel that I could invest that amount so I looked at leveling instead. I received several quotes and selected Lift and Level based on cost & other reviews on AL.
The crew showed up on time (even a bit early) and were onsite about 6 hours. The driveway was so uneven that they pumped 11 yards of fill and even had to leave to 'reload' and return, which they did promptly. There were a couple of areas where the edges opposite of the sunken edge had 'heaved' so severely that I was told that they probably wouldn't become 100% level. Watching the crew work, however, it was clear that they had enough expertise in leveling that even working with this 'tricky' situation, they were able to achieve very good results. No it's not perfect on a couple of the outside edges but the way that they 'split the difference' made it look darn good and virtually eliminated all trip hazards.
The crew was friendly, punctual and professional. At one point another crew even showed up to review the work and offer suggestions on the difficult areas. At all times the crew worked with a very large level, I'm assuming to ensure drainage away from the house.
The work is warranted for 2 years and they were sure to tell me to give them a call if any adjustments become necessary.
Time will tell, but seems like a great job & a good option to replacement when money is an issue.

"They were very good, and were the most affordable. Tony was very knowledgeable, and did a very nice job sealing it because they also had to seal the concrete against my brick wall, and actually did it beveled so it'd look nice."

"The guys from 4-Ever Water-Tite were great! Prior to contracting 4-Ever Water-Tite, I had problems with water and excess moisture in my basement. My basement walls were also pushing in laterally. They put in a perimeter drain system and a new sump pump. They also installed steel support beams to support the walls. I am happy to report that it has now been a full year since 4-Ever Water-Tite worked on waterproofing my basement and it has remained dry. I highly recommend this company."

"It was late in the seasoning we had sticker shock from other bids we had. Contractors were suggesting we wait until spring. Upmost called back and said they could fit us in and to boot offered substantial saving from what we had seen. We finished the contract on Friday after getting the details specified. The proposed to start on Tuesday. They called Monday and asked whether they could get started early with the prep work. We said sure and the old driveway removal group showed up promptly. They worked very effectively and did and additional task for us laying a drain field to divert the roof drainage under the planned new sidewalk to water a new tree. The next day the form building crew went to work. You could see in the detailed measuring that the worker new what he was doing. The accuracy of the layout was confirmed when we tested the drainage with water on the next weekend. The entire surface shed the water well which is a big deal in Michigan otherwise you end up with puddle that become ice in winter. The big show was Thursday when a large and well coordinated did the concrete pour. They worked together, created necessary expansion joints, and detailed the surface. They also did a great job of cleaning up. They kept coming working over the weekend to finish other elements. Resurfacing a porch, cleaning up any splashed cement. By the beginning of the next week they had removed the forms filled in the soil to level and seeded it. We are very happy with the new driveway and sidewalk. They replaced a broken up asphalt drive and very narrow sidewalk. They also added a step from the walk to the porch which will make it a much more comfortable step up for guests and us. Neighbors have already commented on how much it improves the view from the street."

FAQs for concrete patios, walks & steps installation projects in River Rouge, MI

Most sidewalks rely on a ready‑mix blend of Portland cement, sand, gravel, and water that trucks deliver to your site and pour in one continuous lift. For added strength, many contractors fold in fiber mesh or steel reinforcement. This mix cures into a rock‑solid slab that stands up to foot traffic, freeze‑thaw cycles, and daily wear for decades. Expect a pro to recommend a 4‑inch‑thick pour for standard walkways.

With the right mix, proper drainage, and routine upkeep, a concrete sidewalk can last 25 to 50 years. Freeze‑thaw cycles, road salt, and heavy loads all shorten that timeline, but sealing every few years and patching small cracks early keeps damage in check. Think of sealing as inexpensive insurance for decades of safe, stable footing. In milder climates, some slabs push well past the 30‑year mark without major repairs.

Concrete sidewalks crack as a result of significant temperature fluctuations and heavy load pressures. The freeze-thaw cycles and sustained weight from vehicles or intense foot traffic force the concrete to develop cracks over time. Applying a premium sealant every two to three years and substituting salt with sand for de-icing minimizes crack formation. Regular maintenance and timely repairs safeguard the sidewalk’s structural integrity and extend its service life.
