"I had an old, massive chimney built years ago with the wrong brick, it was crumbling off my house. Most chimney repair contractors were quoting me upwards of 30, 40, 50k. Justin worked with me to find a solution which would cost me less than half of that and still ensure the longevity and safety of my chimney/house. It took a while to get done, we had to wait for the right weather but the outcome was fantastic and working with Justin was an easy, smooth and enjoyable process."

"Ben did a wonderful job on our kitchen remodel which included removal of a wall, new island built with cabinets, new flooring and general kitchen remodel. Ben clearly has a passion for cabinetry and woodworking. We have received wonderful comments on his cabinets and woodworking from friends and other vendors we used (counter install company). Only opportunity we saw for improvement were a couple small things which included price and services performed when a 3rd party contractor was hired by Ben. Overall would give an A and look forward to working with Wooden Hammer in the future."

"On the floor job, they came in on-budget, though I was initially dissatisfied with the clean up after the work was completed. Bill Jost, the co-owner, was quick to respond and we were happy with the ultimate outcome. The door was more complicated to install than originally thought, due to custom sizes on the original door and frame and walls that weren't quite true. Nevertheless B&E did a great job, and while I had thought we'd be charged more due to the extra work involved, again Bill invoices me exactly on budget again. I would definitely use B&E again."

"Went Well, Looks Great. <br /> <br /> I've Used Greg with Fine Finish Remodel for many years. He has remodeled my kitchen, built some custom cabinets, replaced the old vinyl floor with Oak hardwood.  He has raised my sinking roof line in the attic and created supports to rectify the cause. He has a replaced a shower enclosure in a condo I rent out. He has also fixed the ceiling and replaced the cabinets after a water leak in the condo.  He has always done a quality job at a fair price. I like using Greg at Fine Finish remodel because I know I can trust him to do the job right and not cheat me with sub quality work."

"I’ve used CK Construction for several projects around my home. Both internal and external. Ine major project was adding a roof to one of our porches that tied into the house. CK also did a large shower tiling project for us. All the jobs turned at great. The team was there early and stayed late and did what they said they would."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Saint Albans, VT

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
