"Excellent work. I needed to schedule the project between another one which pushed the schedule into the late fall. While many other's were not doing small projects or had closed down for the year, Kevin appraised exactly how the special issues could be addressed in one day. He and his work partner worked together very well, both hard workers and accommodating to special minor details. I highly recommend this company for excavations."

"I have used Rockman for many years. They have consistently provided timely, professional and caring service. (I love my trees) . There is never a twig left after their cleanup, I have extensive flower gardens, they are always careful not to do any damage to them. They leave my trees in good shape and prepared for those damaging storms."

"In beginning of June, we paid our deposit and then found out that the plan was to install siding in September. We asked if there was a possibility to move that timing up and they were able to squeeze us in mid-July. Was super excited but then received an email about a week before we thought the siding project would start asking if we wanted the outer corners to match the color we had selected and if so, there was an upcharge and that "non-stock colors" were running about 45 days to order so they would need to push back the date by 45 days. This was never discussed during the sales process. I expressed my concern and Joni was able to locate the outer corners and adjust the schedule to start in end of July and agreed to cover the "upcharge" since this was something new to her as well. Then, she told us that we need to pick soffit/fascia colors, but that anything other than white would require a week or two delay. But then she called back and said she was able to pull some strings and find the color we had requested. So, lots and back and forth about dates. We also had a mason scheduled to come after the siding install so we had to communicate all these changes with him. it was a bit frustrating with all the date changes. Seems like things that CHI should already be aware of and should know to prep the customers upfront and let them know the dependencies on starting the project. When the job started, the team all showed up on time every day. They did a really nice job on the siding and soffits/fascia. That is why I gave them an “A” for quality, but was disappointed with the following: 1.) Poor communication from the start to the end of the actual work. Pat saw some rotting wood while doing the work and replaced it. He never mentioned the cost or asked about it before proceeding forward with the work. While we appreciate his proactiveness, I feel like he should have asked us (if he was going to charge us for it) before doing the work. In any event, he told us about it after the fact and I just saw a line item on our invoice for the work. He also barely communicated with us while he was here. Didn't know when the dumpster was getting removed or what to do with the material left. 2.) We have found numerous screws, nails and sharp metallic options around our house. No one even mentioned that we should be careful moving around outside. This is especially bothersome as we have little kids running around. 3.) Everything was collected on the final day, BUT the porta potty. There was no communication around when it would be picked up either. To be fair, the job was complete on Friday morning and it was picked up by Monday afternoon, but it would have been nice for someone to let us know the plan since it was sitting in our driveway. My biggest complaint with this company is their lack of communication. This is a lot of money to be spending and the project management is less than desirable."

"My wife and I decided to take on a large renovation project to completely remodel the bathroom, redo the exterior of the house, fix a plumbing problem, add ventilation to the kitchen, replace some old windows, update a majority of the storm windows, add an electrical outlet for HVAC in the attic, custom French door to the closet, repair some drywall and upgrade the kitchen sink.  We used Northrup on a previous project so we asked them to bid on the project.  Just like the previous project, their vision and proposal perfectly matched our style so it was an easy decision.  Also, their expertise in older houses showed a more accurate price than their competitors so the end cost was 100% spot on when it was time to pay the bill.  <br /> In regards to the owner, team lead/project manager and extremely talented engineers, carpenters, painters, plumbers, etc. they showed a tremendous amount of care for our house, opinions and vision.  So if you are high maintenance and expecting perfection, Northrup is the company for you. <br /> 1. Exterior of the house: The house was painted, a new mailbox was installed, a new house number plate was installed, new storm windows were installed and custom pediments above the main windows were installed. <br /> 2. Gut and remodel bathroom: Everything was replaced in the bathroom.  We went with the top of the line fixtures, tile, ventilation, electrical and paint.  Their team is so talented and now we have a small spa in our house. <br /> 3. Ventilation in the kitchen: We were unable to cook steaks because there was no ventilation in the kitchen.  They implemented a custom ventilation with custom woodwork covering the ventilation pipes.  <br /> 4. New kitchen faucet and fixed plumbing problem: This sounds simple but it was not.  We had water leaks and they showed us why it happened.  In summary, they fixed a serious water problem and made it look beautiful. They also installed a new faucet and cabinet hardware. <br /> 5. Electrical for HVAC: We decided to wait on installing air conditioning and opted to focus on other projects, but in preparation for a later project, they performed the electrical work in the attic.  Without opening any walls, they spent 4 hours carefully pulling the wires through the wall.  Amazing. <br /> 6. Custom French doors to the walk-in closet: This also sounds like a simple job but is was extremely difficult.  They put the most beautiful framing around doors, installed antique brass/crystal door handles, matched the new wood flooring to the old flooring and installed floor mounted door latches so the doors don?t rattle when the windows are open. <br /> Special thanks goes out to the owner (Mark) and the team lead/project manager (Ron) for amazing job.  We love all of it! <br />"

"Chris came out initially to take a look at the back yard and to discuss the project. I had asked him to put together a design based on some initial ideas and requirements of our own. He was very friendly and knowledgeable about installing patios. We discussed some issues with needing to improve water run off from the back of the house. We were in contact numerous times before start day to refine the design and choose pavers and lighting. Chris was always very responsive to my emails and calls and always pleasant to talk with. On start day, he showed up with his crew and a slew of machinery to excavate and prepare the base for the patio. He worked with me to mark off the perimeter and shape of the patio. When the size of the patio ended up bigger than what I had initially sent as measurements (my error), he didn’t complain- he just said he would order the additional pavers and we’d adjust the final invoice. I had asked him to try and not rip up the surrounding lawn too much and so they laid plywood and made sure that the skidsteers and other trucks stayed on that one small area. This was a real sign of their professionalism to me. I was amazed how the patio took shape in just 1 week. The crew worked through blistering heat and never complained. At the end of week 1, the patio was installed minus the final 4 cap lights since we had to wait for the lights to arrive. I make a partial payment to Chris for the work completed and then 1 week later, he came out and finished the lighting and worked through the electrical hook-ups to the house with our electrician on that day. We used pavers from a vendor who Chris uses and I was pleased with the look of what we chose. The pavers were installed well and Chris used polymeric sand to hold them in place. The job site was cleaned up every night and they moved excavated soil and aggregate base and we never had a “mess” at the house. Part of the project involved them ripping out a concrete landing outside of our adjacent garage access door and I never saw the broken concrete because they just hauled it away. Overall the patio looks incredible and I wouldn’t have asked for a better experience with an installer than what we got with Chris and his crew. I felt that the pricing of the project was very fair and that Chris and his guys were dedicated to finishing the patio as quickly as possible."

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in Saint Michael, MN

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
