"WE BOUGHT FLAG STONE TO PUT ALL AROUND OUR BACKYARD, AND SOME CINDERBLOCK TO MAKE A SMALL WALL IN OUR GARDEN. WE ARE SHOPPERS AND GO TO WHERE THE BEST BUY IS, AND ALSO KEEP IT CLOSE TO HOME. ALPINE IS VERY HELPFUL, AND ALWAYS HAS BLOCK AND STONE IN STOCK, FOR THOSE 'WANT IT' TYPE OF PEOPLE."

"Travis and his team were very easy to work with. From the start he was able to build on our ideas to help with the design aspect and help turned our drab backyard into both pleasing to the eye as well as functional area for us to utilize. The paver designs were lovely and expertly installed and the plants selections were beautiful. I strongly recommend them as they are involved from start to finish of the entire project, including drafting up designs and HOA documents needed for community based projects. My wife and I will enjoy our backyard for years to come."

"I don’t usually give bad reviews but greenway was very poor with their service and was way overpriced. I hired Greenway for a side yard work. The job was to install two sets of steps with stones and install ground covers and optimize the existing irrigation at my home. There were two medium sized pine trees which I wanted removed. The quote they gave had over $2500 just to cut the two trees leaving the stumps behind. I requested them to take that item off the request. I could have this done for less than $400 with another company. In hindsight I should have backed off and not allowed them to work on my yard at all. That was a clue to how overpriced they were. However, we decided to give them a chance. They finished the work fast, but had to redo the steps with stone because the steps started coming off within 2 days! Initially they had this done by a subcontractor. Greenway redid it because it was that bad and unsafe to walk on. The rest of the work was mediocre at best, and way overpriced for what they did. I just want to share my experience so that others do not fall for the 30years of experience that this company boasts. I have to say that the owners and the workers were very professional and friendly throughout the project which earns them 3 stars."

"I was looking to enhance the curbside beauty as well as the functionality of my front yard and my back yard, and System Pavers outperformed any and all expectations and hopes I could have had. From the design created by John (JJ) S., to the superb installation by Luis R. and his outstanding crew, my house was transformed from simply "another house in the neighborhood" to the "talk of the neighborhood". System pavers lived up to their verbal commitments and their written contracts, and throughout the entire 3-week project, checked with me every few days to make certain that the job was being installed to my satisfaction. I increased the job scope along the way, and System Pavers didn't skip a beat! They modified their plans to accommodate my enhancement requests, and finished project is worthy of being advertised in a professional publication. I whole-heartedly recommend System Pavers to anyone considering enhancing the beauty and functionality of their outdoor living areas!"

"they were on time, very clean (although I had to ask for them to clean up the wood floors). However, I asked to remove water stains on our terracotta floors and the sales rep thought we would see a big difference and unfortunately, we did not. In fact, there are now brush strokes on our tiles and they are slick due to the sealant. The technicians told me this was the very best that they could do, and I believed them, but I was hoping for much better results. <br />"

"Excellent work. Dave had to plan and adjust plans on the fly as we did not have a plot plan-nonetheless, he deciphered our questions and musings and made suggestions that improved the site considerably. He spoke to all of the neighbors as the work was extensive and contracted for services with true professionals. He also visited the site every day to check on progress and kept in touch daily. You couldn't ask for better communication from a contractor."

"Outstanding job.  Steve and Mike and their entire team were a complete pleasure to work with. We got multiple bids, theirs was mid-range. Installed approx 425 sq ft of turf in our back yard.  Had great ideas, answered all my questions including ones I didn't know I had. Only company that we got an estimate from that discussed the possibility of south facing windows melting the turf. Left pieces of turf to move around our back yard to ensure there were no areas of reflection from the windows that might melt the turf. Reimagined and installed all of our exterior lighting.  Had fabulous ideas and did outstanding work.  A year later we still couldn't be happier with the work done.  Some of the best money we ever spent on our home. Note- yes, they can sometimes be tough to get ahold of, and you may have to schedule a little further out because they are great at what they do and therefore quite busy.  I think sometimes that can be a sign of a great contractor.  I refer them to everyone I know that needs exterior work done. <br />"

"Pedro and his crew trimmed 10 of the trees on our 1 acre property; from oaks to peppers to jacarandas, etc. They did a beautiful job! A Passion for Gardening has been doing our trees for 5 years or so and we see a big difference in their health and appearance. Thank you for the excellent work!"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in San Diego, CA

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
