"Do not use Wighton's for HVAC installation. We hired Wighton's to install central AC in our new home. We met them onsite before work began, showed them around, and made ourselves readily available ? we live 10 minutes away and told them as much. We even told them we had left snacks and cold drinks in the kitchen for them. What followed was one of the most frustrating and frankly unacceptable contractor experiences we've ever had. They didn't fulfill the most basic terms of their own contract. Their contract explicitly includes "customer walk thru and proper operation explained" as a deliverable. Instead, they called at 3pm to say they were done and had already left ? no heads-up that they were wrapping up, no walkthrough, no explanation of the new system. Just gone. Their contract also promises to "remove old equipment and clean work area to customer's satisfaction." What we actually found: two giant orange traffic cones left behind, a Brita filter, pieces of wood, and literal dirt"

"They sent Jay, and he was the most honest, professional plumber I have meet in my life. Is work ethic, attention to detail, and customer service was world class. Jay was very polite, professional, knowledgeable and fixed the clogged bathroom. He spent so much time making sure the job was done right and fixed it. I am so happy we hired them and I am grateful to Jay and is hard work and dedication. I would hire these professionals any time. "

"We hired them for a bathroom remodel. During the bidding process, a competitor ran a camera down the main line, found no issues. Ben was pretty confident that was wrong. He ran his own camera with me watching and sure enough found cracked pipes that needed replacing. Short term added cost to the job vs brand new bathrooms that would have to get ripped apart again in a couple of years. Long term huge $/time savings. "

FAQs for septic system installation and replacement projects in Santa Barbara, CA

The smallest standard septic system uses a 500-gallon tank, which costs between $875 and $1,150 installed. This size works well for single-occupant dwellings with minimal wastewater production. However, many local regulations specify minimum tank sizes, so check with your building department before committing to this compact option. Some jurisdictions require at least 750 gallons regardless of home size to ensure adequate waste processing capacity.

The installation timeline varies based on site conditions, permit processing, and contractor schedules. The process includes obtaining permits, conducting soil tests, excavation, tank placement, leach field construction, and final connections. Weather conditions, soil challenges, and inspection scheduling can all affect the overall timeline. It's wise to begin planning well in advance of when you need the system operational.

The most economical approach is to install a conventional anaerobic system with a plastic tank. To minimize costs while maintaining legality, obtain multiple quotes from licensed installers, consider scheduling during their slower seasons, and handle basic site preparation yourself. Never skip permits or required testing to save money—illegal installations can result in significant fines and mandatory removal, ultimately costing far more than doing it right initially.

Regular pumping helps prevent system failures and extends operational life. Most small systems require pumping every three to five years, though frequency depends on household size and usage patterns. Pumping services cost between $290 and $530, making this maintenance expense relatively minor compared to potential repair costs ranging from $500 to $2,600 for neglected systems. Establishing a regular maintenance schedule based on your installer's recommendations helps avoid costly emergency services.
