"Highly recommend. I had several repairs needed around my house. Gault met with me within one day, carefully reviewed all of my items, and provided thoughtful perspectives. I expressed that one repair was particularly urgent and Gault worked with me to have the work performed the very next day. The work was done with very high quality and professionalism. I am very satisfied and look forward to potential future engagements. The urgent work we had done was replacing a load bearing 6x6 leg on my screened-in porch."

"I hired them on their rating on Angi as BBB had no deck and porch repair companies in this area other than a few North Carolina companies. They seem to have good workers who really know their stuff. The problem is with their inside people. I had two jobs: Replace and repair a sinking screen porch and repair an unstable deck. Their salesman was courteous but didn’t explain all the options available didn’t have any pictures of similar jobs. The screened porch was pretty cut and dried, and the proposal was accurate. When it came to the deck, the salesman said the planking looked good and could be resurfaced and suggested a coating. He also gave us the option of metal rails or wood but no description. As the wood railing was in total collapse, we chose metal since we didn’t want the same problem and we chose the color to be white with a slate grey coating on the deck. The options he didn’t give us (which we found out later to our chagrin) was replacing the deck planting or tearing down the entire deck and replacing it. We just took it that he knew what he was doing. When I received the proposal, there was many items left off such as the color of the railing and the coating. I had to pen the changes in. Being that there was changes to the proposal, I needed to have them sign the contract with the updates. That’s when I ran into problems. They don’t communicate. I tried, on numerous occasions to call them to get a down payment check to them but they never return calls. Their office hours are from 9 to 1, Monday through Saturday so I decided to drive to their office. The office is in an obscure place behind another property posted with a no trespassing sign. I called them on the cell to get directions but again, just an answering machine. I was ready to start all over again looking for another contractor when they finally called me and explained they were having difficulties with their phones and asked me to mail in the check. I explained the differences in the proposal and the amendments needed to make it a contract. They finally sent someone over to sign the contract and pick up a down payment. All this took over a week when it should have taken only a day or two. Since they had a good rating on Angi, I decided to proceed. The contract was signed in mid May with a projected starting date of mid June. That’s when the communication problems swung into high gear. They seldom answer their phone much less return calls. June came and went and their excuse was work on other projects ahead of me had delays due to weather and supply shortages. I could understand that as that is a widespread problem in the construction industry right now. But it still didn’t explain their lack of communication. After numerous calls and emails, I finally had a date. Again it was put off and suddenly one morning, the workers showed up but without materials. Again, they didn’t communicate even within their own company. The workers set to work tearing out the old wood and next thing I knew. They were cutting the deck flooring which they were supposed to refinish. Again lack of communication within their company. They then had to replace what they removed with new deck at their expense. Had I been able, in the beginning, to have that option and it’s cost, I would have probably chosen to replace the deck for a few more dollars. Now I have half a new deck and half an old deck. Next came the metal railings. Before they could put them up, I noticed they were black. Our contract was for white. This made another delay as the fence stood there for over a day while awaiting one of their workers to replace them. Again, poor or no communication. Then my wife noticed that they were going to install the railing coating the deck with the wrong color. Again, another lack of communication resulting in a delay while it was straightened out and a worker dispatched to buy the right coating. Then, without warning, as I was in the shower one morning, one of the workers knocked on the door to announce they were finished. I was never notified of a finish date and was naked except for a bathrobe as the worker wanted me to sign off on the job. The whole job site was littered with construction debris and tools which prevented me from making a thorough inspection as I am handicapped and don’t want to have an accident. I signed off and gave them a check. Thank God I made a mistake in the math and underpaid because when my wife got home she gave it an inspection and found a warped piece of lumber was used causing and opening, one of the soffits hadn’t been closed and there was enough opening for a bird’s or squirrel’s nest and finally one piece was replaced short and there was an opening large enough for some pretty big bugs or small birds to get into. Only then was there communication looking for money. I explained the problem and they said I already signed off but I told them the problem with communication and the job site was not cleared for inspection. On a subsequent day, a worker was sent to correct the problems and I tried to call in the final payment on a credit card. Again, left a message which wasn’t answered and I got an email asking for final payment. Again, poor communication. I am not sending a credit card through the mails or trusting the internet to pay. Finally the owner, John, called me and I gave him the information for the final payment. In the end, the screened porch looks great but the deck looks like it was made by a fly by night outfit. The old lumber, which I was never given the option to replace, looks like **** at the corners with all sorts of nails and screws. This company has the ability to do good work but is severely mismanaged with poor communication. If using this contractor, be present and persistent to correct their mistakes. Insist on a detailed contract and make sure the worksite is cleaned up before inspecting the work. Inspect thoroughly, even if it means delaying a day before writing that final check. I think this company has good intentions but terrible management and communication skills."

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Sapphire, NC

Trex decking can become slippery when wet, but it's less slippery than traditional wood decking. To enhance safety during wet or icy conditions, you can add aluminum nonslip treads to your stairs and use rock salt to prevent ice buildup. Just remember to rinse off salt residue to keep your deck looking its best.

Trex decking is water-resistant but not completely waterproof. While the boards repel moisture and resist deterioration, it's important to ensure the substructure is properly protected. Using a system like Trex RainEscape can help keep the area beneath your deck dry and prolong the life of the supporting structure. Proper installation with effective drainage and ventilation will help prevent any moisture-related issues.

Trex decking requires only minimal maintenance and is designed so that regular cleaning is sufficient to preserve its appearance. The boards need to be swept and rinsed with a sprayer to remove debris, and no sealing is necessary because the water-resistant design prevents moisture damage. Maintaining your deck with a consistent cleaning routine helps sustain its durability and visual appeal, eliminating the extra expense of sealing that wood decks incur at costs between $600 and $1,300.
