"Tarheel encapsulated our crawlspace. They cleaned out the bulk of the debris and sprayed fungicide. They also managed to knock over a post jack. The second day they put a sump pump and replaced the old insulation They installed reinforced plastic sheeting, including over the base of the fallen post jack. The insulation began falling within a few hours of the crew leaving. They did send a second crew to fix this. Our older furnace depends on the under-house vents to breathe. These were all sealed up. The furnace pulled combustion air out of the house until I cut the vents open. In digging the sump well (at one of the highest points of the crawlspace) they cracked the sewer line, which let gravel fall in. Whenever the drains back up enough, the sump pump sends raw sewage out to the front yard. I am currently waiting for an estimate from the plumber to replace the broken sewer pipe and move the sump pump. I have called to discuss this and hope to eventually get a return call."

"We worked with 3 different roofing/gutter companies for quotes. We chose RainGo and feel positive we made the right decision. We had a 25 year old roof on our home. No leaks, but it was time to replace. Tim and his office associate, Susan could not have done a better job of answering our questions, being attentive to any emails and scheduling the job. Tim came to our home and did a thorough inspection. He had multiple samples to show the different types of shingles, costs, life expectancy, etc. (Also provided locations of homes his company had worked on in the area where we could ride by and see the end product.) Steve, his foreman ensured the work was done on time and properly. The whole team made the experience seamless. Our old gutters were really too small for the size of the roof and home. All new gutters with leaf guards were also installed. Our home is surrounded by large oak trees and this was the first year with the new gutters. How nice not to have leaves piled up in the old gutters. We were so pleased with our roof that we asked Tim and his team to install gutters at our church. Again, they did an excellent job (professional, on time, reasonable cost)."

"Kevan & Drew at Drain Designs were fantastic! First let me say it was refreshing too actually, have someone respond and follow up to a call. I had called several companies/persons but none either responded back or showed up for their appointment. So, I was a pleasantly surprised when Kevan responded to my voicemail and showed up for the scheduled appointment. Water was leaking into my back room from underneath the deck and creating issues. Kevan came out and assessed the problem and devised a solution. Kevan & Drew showed up as assured. The process was explained every step of the way, so I had a very clear understanding of what was being done and why. Both Kevan & Drew were professional, and their work is quality work. I would definitely work with Drain Designs again and would have no issues recommending them to others. You won't be disappointed!"

"Nelson Alvarez did an excellent job. He is careful about masking (covid), and is professional, knowledgeable, and reasonably priced. Lowes and Home Depot didn't have ready-made mailbox posts, so he built one - it's nicely crafted - at no extra cost, and he remounted the metal mail box and the house numbers and installed the post in concrete. I put the original short fence up, and Nelson rebuilt it as it should have been done. The two walls inside my house were repaired, painted, and look like new. Nelson Alvarez is good, honest man. We will call him again for sure! ."

"We were very pleased with the end result and believe that the drawers will definitely add value to our home as well as making life a lot easier for my wife. As we age it becomes much harder to bend over and fish out a particular pan or pot. As a whim we decided to look into sliding drawers. Linda, the senior designer, sat down with us, discussed our problems and needs, and then showed us how they could help. Once we decided what we wanted, their installer Joe came out and measured the cabinets and discussed with my wife what she wanted in each drawer so they could be customized for that use. After several months, during which time the drawers were being made, Joe came out and did the installation. Everything fit perfectly. The drawers are expensive and that initially surprised me, but the fact that they are extremely high quality materials and that they are custom made for our cabinets made them worth the investment."

"We had serious issues with our second (half) story being consistently warmer than our first story, bringing with it very high electric bills. Peak Energy performed an energy audit that identified the issue and then sealed our attic (in the middle of a summer heat wave, no less) in 2 days. The team was professional and punctual and the discrepancy in our temperatures between the two floors went from >5 degrees to <2 degrees."

FAQs for basement drainage channels installation projects in Smithfield, NC

Expect a well-built French drain to last 30 to 40 years. By channeling both surface- and ground-water away from your foundation, the system relieves hydrostatic pressure and helps prevent costly structural damage. Choose a pipe with a quality cloth filter to keep sediment out and extend the drain’s life. A quick annual inspection and routine cleanouts will keep water flowing freely, ensuring the system continues to protect your home for years to come.

Most French drains sit two feet below grade, but depth ultimately depends on the problem you’re solving. For puddling rainwater or snowmelt, a shallow curtain drain at lawn level often does the trick. To handle rising groundwater, pros dig deeper, down to the footing, and run the pipe beneath the basement slab. A drainage contractor will determine the optimal depth for your specific soil conditions and water issues.

A properly installed interior French drain captures water at the slab, channels it to a sump pit, and directs it safely outside, preventing basement floods before they occur. Because the pipe sits just under the floor edge, a plumber can reach it easily for cleaning or repairs. Pairing the drain with a reliable sump pump gives you the best long-term protection.

Hire a contractor who installs drainage systems every day—typically a foundation specialist, drainage contractor, experienced landscaper, or plumber with waterproofing experience. These pros understand slope, soil, and local codes, and they have the equipment to trench safely around utilities. Ask for references and photos of recent jobs to be sure they can design a system that keeps water off your foundation for decades.

Once the drain is in, patch the yard by reseeding bare spots or replacing plants the crew removed. Inside, look for ways to add value—finishing the basement or upgrading interior waterproofing while the space is open often costs less now than later. Schedule a quick annual checkup to flush sediment and confirm the pipe and sump pump are clear. Consistent maintenance ensures the drain functions properly and protects your investment.

Most policies don’t cover the cost of repairing a French drain itself, but they may provide coverage for water damage if the system fails. Coverage varies by insurer, so be sure to read the fine print or contact your agent before any issues arise. If you live in a high-risk flood zone, consider a separate flood policy to close the gap. Knowing your coverage in advance helps you budget for repairs and avoid unexpected costs.
