"<p>it was superb! they easiest, hassle free Radon test in town, with extremely proficient people -- very knowledgeable and very people-friendly! they took their time to explain things on the phone to me before I committed. the test came back within 10 days or so -- via email. which is very convenient. it was very clear as it is, but I like talking through it and get advice. they were instantly available to discuss. they gave me future tips to keep on top of all things Radon related. </p> <p>I have to say that all this comes to be after 3 months of many back and forths with 3 other companies -- none of the other companies could be bothered to schedule a time, and those who did, never showed up.. many times over. I don't know why I was so patient with them and I wish had discovered Environmental Testing & Research Laboratories much sooner.</p> <p>Really highly recommend them!</p> <br />"

"Dan performed air testing for Radon, and water testing for a wide variety of possible contaminants as part of pre-purchase building inspection. Responsiveness was fabulous, results were quick and very easy to understand, including very clear information on what the various EPA limits are for each item. The realtor said he's the best provider of this service he's ever seen, and he's been in the business for at least 10 years."

"We contacted Air and Water Quality, Inc, the Freeport office to give us a quote.  The salesman, Gregg, came out and checked out our basement to determine how the job was to be done.  He checked to see how the various water and venting pipes would have to be installed.  Our basement ceiling is very low and it was a chore to be able to snake the vent pipes through the crawl space.  He also checked to see if where the vent pipe was to be installed was far enough away from windows and propane tanks to be in code. Gregg went back to his office and drew up plans how this installation would have to be done. <br /> Air and Water gave us a quote of $5550 which was more than other companies I contacted but I was swayed by the brochure they gave me comparing their system (Clearadon aeration system) with other radon mitigation systems. This system was easier to maintain and appeared to have less wires and pumps hanging off it.  It looked more professional and safer. <br /> Just before the system was installed, the co-owner of the company stopped by to make sure everything was OK, this was a bit more complicated that some other jobs. <br /> We were not around when the actual work was done but everything looked like it was professionally done and the area was left clean. <br /> After running the system a day or so, I sent in the sample of water to the lab, from the testing kit that they left.  Testing was done as part of the price.  When the results came back they were lower but still high,  I contacted Air and Water and they went over a few common things that could cause that such as the switch for the exhaust fan being shut off.  I figured out what the problem was, I had moved a lever tht let in untreated water. Once I put the lever back and retested, again for no additional charge, the test came back as  less than150 pCi/L, prior to installation of the system the reading was over 10,000pCi/L. <br /> Overall I am very happy with Air and Water and their installation and system. <br />"

"Jim DIckson of Cornerstone Home Inspection did an outstanding job on my home inspection!  He is very knowledgeable, professional, and thorough.  He detailed written report was to me the next day.  In addition to covering all items listed in his report, he was also wonderful about pointing out tips to me to help with general home maintenance.  I would highly recommend Jim needed to hire a home inspector. <br />"

FAQs for radon gas testing projects in Solon, ME

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. The gas seeps through cracks in foundations and collects in basements and other low areas. Once you breathe it in, radioactive particles lodge in lung tissue and do long-term damage. Because you can’t see or smell radon, the EPA recommends testing your home every two years—and after major renovations—to keep your family safe.

Yes—every home should be tested. The EPA advises doing it at least every two years and any time you remodel, buy, or sell. On average, one in 15 houses nationwide sits above the recommended limit, and the only way to know where yours stands is a formal test. The equipment simply measures gas levels and won’t change your indoor environment, so the process is completely harmless.

Certified radon professionals—often home inspectors or dedicated radon mitigation contractors—handle testing. These radon testing professionals follow EPA protocols and use calibrated instruments to check levels throughout your house. Hiring a certified radon specialist means results you can trust for real estate deals, insurance requirements, and, most importantly, your family’s health.

Inspectors specialize in measuring radon gas levels, while licensed mitigation contractors design and install the systems that remove it. If your test comes back high, your inspector can point you to a qualified mitigation pro who will size and install the right fan, piping, or other equipment to bring levels down.

No—standard home air purifiers don’t touch radon. They’re built to trap dust and pollen, not radioactive gas. If testing shows high levels, you’ll need a dedicated mitigation system that vents the gas from beneath your home to the outdoors. Relying on a room purifier alone won’t keep your indoor air safe.

Opening a few windows in your home might dilute radon for a short time, but the gas seeps back in as soon as they’re closed. For a lasting fix, you’ll need a professional mitigation system—often a sub-slab depressurization fan—that pulls radon from beneath the foundation and safely vents it outside.
