"To be as fair as possible, it went relatively well at first until it came time for the finishing touches: I went with this company after getting 6 estimates because they were the only ones who wanted to correct the root cause of my water issue instead of just paving over it like most others. I paid a bit extra for this, which I was glad to do if it corrected the problem for good - $9,000 total for both the concrete and asphalt work. They showed up on time each day and showed up on the days they said they'd be there. Demo and initial grading went pretty smoothly. Although they didn't bring a jackhammer to break up the concrete, so I came out to assist and used my own diamond blade saw, sledge hammer and pry bar to save them some time. The not so good - Concrete: I paid extra for what I was told were "top guys" who were going to do the concrete work. It was a small 10'x7' pad, so a pretty easy job for experienced concrete workers. The problem is, I didn't get a top guy; he was unable to make it, so he sent an amateur in his place. This kid didn't bring the correct tools with him to make a simple straight expansion joint. When I asked for it to be created, he created it crooked and then left the job site. I had to have him called back to attempt to straighten it, as the concrete was already drying. I tried to communicate what I wanted, but he barely spoke English; I'm not sure he was even legal, but that's besides the point. It looks passable and the water drains in the right direction, but certainly not "top guy" quality work -- more like that of an apprentice. I was very disappointed and felt a bit deceived. Asphalt: Now this is where I expected them to shine, as I have a simple 500 sqft rectangle driveway. The water problem seems corrected, as they brought in 2" stones and extra base for the bad area. Prior to laying the asphalt, they spread a bit more base to strengthen the driveway. The not so good: Instead of a nice smooth surface, I have little ridges up and down my driveway created by the edges of the steam roller. When the sun hits the driveway, it looks utterly terrible. This should be easily corrected with a torch and roller. Second, the grading was not done well near the end of the driveway and I have a noticeable high area to which several neighbors have come up to me and made comments to the affect of "I didn't think a new driveway would look so wavy," and "why is there a big mound there?" Now every time I look at my driveway, I curse myself for paying so much money for this job. If I could post photos here, I would. I contacted Randy about this, but he will not give me a time when he can come by to look at it. He did not show or call on the day he stated he would. I have a feeling that since the final check has cleared, no one will be coming by since there is no financial incentive to. I hope I'm wrong. Where I come from, you do the job right so you don't have to come back. And if you do have to come back, you show up when you say you will, guarantee your work and make it right. Therefore, I cannot recommend this company and nor would I hire again. I believe it's situations like these for which Angie's list was created. I was a bit long-winded, but am trying to paint the proper picture for future readers to make an informed decision."

Customers say: Quality work

"I cannot say enough about Fernando and SAFE-FER landscaping! My wife and I are in Euclid-St Paul in St Pete, and on a referral we started with some basic irrigation. We ended up doing 3 projects with Fernando, and he is the best contractor I've ever worked with--not just in Florida, but anywhere! He's friendly, communicative, and does great work, for a very reasonable price. He planted clusia, banana trees and foxtails around our pool, foxtails and arecas around our outdoor kitchen, and basically re-did our original irrigation for the front lawn. His team also did gravel and pavers better than our pool company. He came by today to replace our sprinkler controller and one plant that had died. He is reliable and sees things through. If you have an outdoor project in mind, use Fernando! And ask him for James as a reference!"

"Camilo did a wonderful job! I have sidewalks all the way around the house, and I needed a drip system installed on both sides of my house going to the back part of the property for my plants, trees, and an elevated garden. When C&B services came out to the house to do an estimate for the project, I explained what I was hoping to do, and he said it wouldn’t be a problem. We set a date and time which was only 48 hours later. Camilo was on time, showed me what he was going to be doing, explained each step to me and completed the job in only 90 minutes! He’s very professional, easy to work with and even made some suggestions on where to place the water source for all my different plants. C&B provides many services. If you want a job done right, and fairly priced call C & B Services, I’m glad I did!!"

"We recently had our pavers pressure washed and sealed by Premier Paver Restoration. I must admit it was a delightful experience! Not only were the "gentlemen" knowledgeable, professional and skilled, but they were very personable, respectful and highly courteous. John, Aden and Sam worked like a "well-greased" family machine assisting each other in the process. The family is very accommodating and even offered to reposition some damaged bricks. They also power washed our sidewalk! This is a family owned business that takes pride in their work. The operation was flawless from the very beginning when their brother Jason, also very courteous and respectful, presented us with a reasonable estimate for the job. He frequently checked in on the process to make sure that we were satisfied. This is a dynamite team! There is not enough that I can say about this company! No wonder they consistently are given Super Service Awards by Angi. You can not do better than hire Premier Paver Restoration! We recommend them highly!"

"Best landscaper in St. Pete! I've worked with several landscapers in Pinellas County including Flordiginous, Landscape by Design, Tommy Todd and others. I mean no disrespect to them, but sometimes you learn this stuff through trial and error. Jim Knobel of 2nd Nature will provide the "real deal" in terms of professional expertise, honesty, valued advice and save you money to boot. I'm not a troll or "hired hand." I'm just a happy customer. Best wishes."

"Perfect.  Chris was extremely detailed on what would be done and as we were promised, our marble tile floors look brand new.  His employee was very nice, did his work and advised us what to use and not to use on our newly cleaned floors. Don't look any further, you want this company to take care of your stone flooring. <br />"

"Amazing. From sales to service to delivery and installation, this company was prompt, professional and did excellent work. My sister used them 8-10 years ago for a driveway and pool deck and they both are in great shape still. I can't say enough good about this company."

"Bob and his assistant did a great job. The stone looks great in the driveway and the job was done very quickly and cleanly. They were on time and Bob  called ahead to let me know they on their way. The cost was  very reasonable. I would definitely hire again for other projects. You couldn't ask for better service! <br />"

FAQs for gravel or loose fill paving install, spread or scrape projects in South-florida, FL

To calculate how much pea gravel you need for your project, multiply the length, width, and depth of the area you want to cover to find the volume in cubic feet. Then, divide that number by 27 to convert it to cubic yards to determine the amount of pea gravel you need.

A yard of pea gravel weighs about 1.3 tons or 2,600 pounds. Keep in mind that wet gravel weighs more than dry, and different types of gravel can vary in weight. For example, due to its density, river rock weighs significantly more than crushed stone and pea gravel.

The ideal depth for pea gravel depends on the type and size of your project. You'll need at least two to three inches for walkways and patios and a minimum of six inches for driveways to support heavy vehicles and prevent shifting over time. Aim for a depth of three to four inches in decorative garden beds or drainage areas.

Pea gravel is attractive, versatile, and low-maintenance. It provides excellent drainage, making it ideal for pathways, driveways, and garden beds. On the downside, its sharp texture isn't ideal for bare feet, and it can be challenging to weed or remove once installed. It can also shift underfoot without proper edging, creating an uneven surface.

Alternative landscaping materials you can use instead of pea gravel include wood chips, decomposed granite, crushed stone, pebbles, quartz, mulch, sand, and river rock. These materials offer different aesthetics, performance, and costs, so it’s important to do your research to determine which one best fits your landscape design and budget.

Many homeowners choose pea gravel because it requires minimal upkeep compared to other landscaping materials. You'll need to rake it occasionally to redistribute the stones and maintain an even surface. Pros also recommend installing weed barrier fabric beneath the gravel to prevent unwanted growth, although some weeds may still appear over time.
