"We just had our new Moisture Shield composite deck installed by The Deck & Patio Company and couldn’t be more pleased! From start to finish, this company is five star. From working with the Sales Rep, Tom, to the Project Manager, Martin, the owner, Jed and installers Jimmy and Pedro, these guys are all perfectionists and know what they’re doing. They tore out our existing deck that was only 7 years old, already rotting and a liability to walk on. They had to start from scratch to rebuild our 455 sq. ft. deck. The installers cleaned up every day before they left and never left anything laying around the yard. They worked hard every day for 14 days and worked in everything from 83 degree weather to temps in the low 40’s (this is Texas, after all ?). These gentlemen cared about their work and it showed in their craftmanship and attention to detail. We highly recommend The Deck & Patio Company for your outdoor needs. They are a well-oiled machine and the entire process was smooth and painless. We would hire them again for future projects."

Small jobs welcome

"I hired them to do a patio deck, total rebuild. It required part of the old deck to be removed. I had a tree taken down that was in the middle of the old deck and our plan was just to go over it with the new deck. I was not on site but they realized that the tree stump and roots would not allow them to put their new deck boards down properly. They rented equipment and removed the tree stump and roots. I had a friend who has extensive experience in construction monitor the job and he felt like they had done an excellent job. They bid the job to low, I paid them extra for their expense and time. I would use them again and would recommended them to my friends. "

"We’re currently remodeling two bathrooms under the same contract. The first bathroom is complete, and the second one just started this week. While their bid wasn’t the lowest we received, it felt fair and, in hindsight, definitely worth it. The project manager was an excellent communicator—knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and never pressured us to accept the offer. We’re extremely pleased with the quality of work on the first bathroom and are confident the second will turn out just as well. A tip for future clients: make sure you have all the necessary materials on hand. We did, and the team completed the bathroom ahead of schedule. The space is narrow, so the photo angles don’t do it justice, but I hope they still give a sense of the high-quality work delivered."

"Aguiluz did several tasks: tree trimming, sprinkler repair, sodding, and gravel for a very shadded area between houses. Walter was on time to evaluate and bid, the bid was significantly lower than the competition, work began and completed on schedule. Trees look great -- perhaps left a few small dead branches very high where they would have needed a crane for access. Did so well my neighbor had their trees done too. Did excellent job tracing and repairing sprinkler system over 20 years old and unused for 3 years, including replacing several broken roters and sprinklers, lines cracked by roots and time, and locating and repairing wiring on 3 zones that had now pwere. One issue remains with sprinkler, and customer service has been excellent working on follow-up. Excellent job of removing grass (and saving some I wanted to use in back yard dog area!), preparing, leveling, and adding new top soil, tilling, and sodding with the palmetto variety of st. Augustine grass I requested. And then left the yard and side cleaner than when they started. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would. When we have additional projects (some deck work needed, and perhaps some larger bushes replaced) Aguiluz will be my first call. I am going to mow myself for at least a year (with new EGO electric mower) to keep a close eye on the lawn but when we go back to weekly maintenance, these people will be my choice. Bottom line -- outstanding service, excellent outcome, great value. If you have landscaping project and don't include Aguiluz in your consideration, I think you are doing yourself a disservice."

Customers say: Quality work

"JD replaced the roof on my townhome in Braselton, GA. I live in Houston, TX and manage my own rental property. He started the job at 6 am and sent drone shots of the completed work by 10:30 EST. I was amazed. He also sent pics as the work was being completed. He is first class and stays in direct contact with customer so there is now miscommunication. We paid him 1/2 upfront and the remainder the day of completion. This was a small job for him and I'm grateful he took it on for us. Living two day drive away, it is reassuring that we have someone as reputable and upstanding as JD Roofing LLC. THANK YOU!!!"

FAQs for deck or porch projects in Stafford, TX

To maximize your budget, compare quotes of several builders that fit within your specifications. Don’t be afraid to draw a wider geographic circle if the contractor is willing to travel without charging more. But affordability only matters if you get a quality deck out of it.

Cutting corners or simply finding the cheapest pro could result in significant problems. The materials used may be cheap and rot quickly. The support the surface provides might be unstable and dangerous. Always consider the long-term costs and benefits of quality work. Paying less upfront may actually be more expensive if you consider the cost of repairs.

Deciding on which materials you should use depends entirely on the type of deck you’re looking for. Composite works well for a simple surface exposed to harsh elements, while concrete is the standard choice for many patios. Your decking material options can range from wood to aluminum. Learn about the pros and cons of these materials to make the right decision.

You can build a deck during any season, which is why choosing the right time for this project depends on your preferences:

  • Spring: get your deck ready in time for landscaping and to enjoy it throughout the warmer seasons.

  • Summer: use spring for the planning process, then get the project ready before it gets cold out.

  • Fall: Limit turf or landscape damage by building once most plants begin to recede.

  • Winter: make the excavation process easier, thanks to cold and firm ground.

Many deck builders prefer winter, which is also the season with the shortest waiting queues. Still, other seasons are far from impossible for this type of project.

Expect a thorough examination of the space, and the development of a project schedule. Delivery of materials might already have occurred or could be planned at this point.

Additional research about working with deck builders can help you understand what to expect from experts, and what they expect from you.

Make sure the site of the deck or patio is clear of any landscaping and debris. The contractor will also call a utilities locator service to mark power, water, cable, and other services around the area where they will be digging. The cleaner the area your builder has to work with, the more quickly they can get started. Make sure they have space to park any construction vehicles. Find a dry space for materials that might need storage during the install. Finally, ensure clear access to the site through your house or property.

When it comes to the DIY vs. hire a pro decision for your deck, the answer tends to be clear. Only take it on yourself if you have significant expertise and experience. Without either, you risk building a faulty exterior space, leading to injury risks. Projects built without necessary expertise also break more quickly, making them more expensive in the long run.

If you do want to take on decking as a DIY project, be sure to do your research. Learn about installing the posts and footing for your framing. Understand how to lay decking boards and build the railings and stairs you need for access and security.
