"Paul, from Precision Interior Stair and Rail, did a tremendous job giving our outdated and creaky staircase a face lift. He replaced all the visible parts of our staircase, including the stringers, treads, risers, railings, balusters, and newel post. Since our house is 70 years old, nothing is easy. Paul worked diligently to cut everything to size and took extra care to patch our difficult plaster walls. Since I like doing some of the work myself, I personally appreciated that Paul was flexible and let me paint and finish the stairs as a way to get involved and save some money. Paul completed the job on time and was very responsive, particularly over text message. I could not be happier with Paul's work, especially considering the level of precision and expertise this job required. He was so easy and low-maintenance to work with and delivered a great outcome. Thank you!"

"Mr. Sutti impressed me with his willingness to work on a project which was challenging due to the horrible heat and humidity. It involved digging out and replacing many pasture fence half-round posts and putting up many new boards. The fence looks so much better now. I recommend him."

"Mr. Mendez and his crew did an excellent job with our skylights installation and painting our shutters and also painting our kitchen and family room. He is very responsive and completed the work very efficiently. Will definitely be calling him again for more painting projects. Highly recommend him. UPDATED AS OF 02/27/2022: Mr. Mendez also replaced our stair railing. He built everything from scratch. He also replaced some light fixtures. He does so much more besides painting. We plan on calling him when we renovate our lower family room."

"It was an absolute pleasure working with George and Tea and the final product was beautiful. The workmanship is outstanding and nothing was overlooked. The walls are quite uneven in my home and it took meticulous attention to detail to ensure a quality result. I couldn't be more pleased with how it turned out. It is a work of art. The price may be a bit higher than what others may quote, but it is well worth it!!!!!"

"Working with Talant was wonderful. We interviewed 5 contractors before starting this project and he was by far the most reasonable. He was timely to communicate with and was never late for an appointment. He did all of the work himself - no subcontractors = better rates. He tore one of our bathrooms down to the studs (except left the bathtub) redid the flooring, replaced the vanity, retailed the shower, installed all new shower plumbing (we split the valve to add a hand held option), added a pocket door, added lighting in the shower, replaced the light fixture above the vanity and had him replace the carpet on our stairs and repaint another room. He was great and everything looks wonderful. We had no complaints at all throughout the project. He put down canvas every day and cleaned up before leaving so it really wasn't disruptive. He let me know what I needed to buy and when he needed it. There were no delays at all (we did book with him in April for work done in June so he already ordered the custom vanity we needed and had it on day 1 of the project). We will absolutely work with him in the future!"

"We were very pleased with the professionalism and quality of work done. Our basement flooded requiring a complete rebuild. Mike and his team were timely with delivery of an estimate, very communicative and we greatly appreciated his vision and suggestions. Because of the quality of work we decided to use him to replace our roof as well. I would highly recommend MJL to anyone and have actually already referred him to family."

"I was extremely pleased with the work. They came out quickly to see what needed to be done and gave me an estimate in a timely manner. I needed 2 bathrooms to be completely remodeled. Work started promptly, and was professional done. Very professional and cleaned up all the mess. I will be using them again very shortly for my next project. I would definitely recommend Manuel remodeling company."

FAQs for wood stairs and railings installation and replacement projects in Stafford, VA

Pressure-treated lumber is the most inexpensive deck railing material. It's a cost-effective option that offers a good balance of durability and affordability for budget-conscious homeowners. Pressure-treated wood meets essential safety standards while keeping upfront costs low. In contrast, vinyl, polyurethane, and composite materials tend to be more expensive but offer additional aesthetic and maintenance benefits.

To calculate how much deck railing you need, measure the length of all the edges of your deck where railings are required (excluding any openings or areas bordered by the house). Since precise measurements are crucial, it's a good idea to hire a professional. Contractors have the expertise to accurately measure and install your deck railings.

In most cases, safety standards require railings on steps with more than four risers, steps wider than 44 inches, and decks over 30 inches high, measured from the next level down.

Railings should also be between 34 and 38 inches tall. Regulations can vary based on your location, so it's important to check your local building codes or consult a local contractor. There are also rules about the size of the gaps between pickets and between the bottom of the railing and the deck.

Before installing a railing on your front porch, you'll need to check local permitting requirements. Local building authorities may have specific codes that require a permit—or, in some cases, no permit at all. Reviewing your city's guidelines and consulting a qualified professional will help ensure your project meets all legal and safety standards, preventing any unexpected issues during inspections.

Deciding whether to repair or replace your deck railings depends on the extent of the damage and whether you can match new materials to the old ones. If you have minor issues, repair might be an option. However, when it's challenging to match existing materials, replacing the railings can give your deck a fresh start and reset its lifespan. A decking expert can assess your railings and recommend the best course of action to improve safety and maintain a cohesive look.
