"Johnson and Sons did some basic remodeling and replaced a tub with a walk-in shower, plus floor replacement with tile. This was the second partial bathroom we had them do. Their best quality is their constant communication, you always know what's going on and when, and they are extremely responsive. Anything that we weren't happy about, they wanted the opportunity to fix and did. We had some hold ups with waiting for parts, but that was more about the lag time in being in the queue for busy contractors (and those parts being discontinued in the meantime), not negligence. They stuck to their estimate, no creeping up of costs other than things we discovered when the walls came down which were discussed with us first. I think the best recommendation is that we went back to them after the first job, and we'll ask them to bid again when it comes time for the kitchen!"

"We were very satisfied with our experience with Chase and his team. Chase was always available, via text and in-person to check in and answer questions. He was very present in the decision making phases and once demo and construction began, checked in on the project often. He had a very discerning eye, and ensured quality was top notch at every turn. His crew was reliable, friendly, respectful and professional. The process was laid out very clearly, and adhered to a reasonable timeline. Our expectations were met again and again and we had no doubts that it would be completed thoroughly and in a timely manner. Would definitely recommend their services for any project!"

"Since I now need to use a wheelchair, several doorways in my home needed to be widened. Two exterior doors had to be replaced, one of which also had to be changed to open out rather than opening in. I hired Johnson Custom Builders and was absolutely delighted with their work. They were always professional. They laid or hung plastic sheeting to contain the dust they created, then at the end of the day they ran the vacuum and even mopped the floor! They were respectful of me and my home. Their work was excellent. One of the things I most appreciated was Ryan Johnson's communication with me before, during, and at the conclusion of the project. He listened to what I needed and then figured out how to make it happen. I recommend Johnson Custom Builders highly!"

"Was told that we where gonna get taken care of and they would make it nice for us but then we where treated like bottom of the barrel crap because they gave us a good deal. Only had one guy most of the time and he came and went as he pleased then I did the demo and then was treated like I was supposed to help more then when 1 other guy showed up once they worked for 4 hours got the frame of the deck up and a few deck boards on but they didnt level the ground or the deak didnt clear any of the crap plants etc underneath the deck then didnt support the middle of a 10ft deck it was just bs a pretty horrible experience all together "

"We recently completed a basement finishing project and had a great experience from start to finish. Alex was our main point of contact, and from the sales process through completion, everything was smooth and well organized. Communication was truly top notch — we received a daily video update showing progress and outlining the plan for the next day, which made the entire process feel transparent and stress-free. Roman and another crew member were on-site day in and day out, often from 7–8am until as late as 7pm, and their work ethic really showed. They were professional, reliable, and clearly committed to getting the job done right. We now have over 800 square feet of beautifully finished additional living space, and we couldn’t be happier with the result. Overall, we were very pleased with both the process and the final outcome and would absolutely recommend this team."

FAQs for basement remodeling projects in Monroe, WA

Finishing a basement turns unused square footage into livable space and returns up to 70% of what you spend when you sell your home. Beyond that resale boost, you gain a playroom, home office, or guest suite you can start enjoying right away. That mix of daily comfort and solid return on investment (ROI) makes basement finishing one of the smartest upgrades you can tackle.

In some parts of the country—especially lots on swamps, high water tables, or other wetlands—local codes prohibit basements. Saturated soil puts constant pressure on foundation walls and lets water seep in faster than any sump pump can handle.

If your property sits on waterlogged ground, building on a slab or crawl space is often safer, more affordable, and code-compliant.

Most basements wrap up in four to eight weeks. Framing takes three to five days, with electrical and plumbing rough-ins following over the next week. Add five days for drywall, two to three for flooring, and another week for paint, trim, and punch-list items.

Delays can happen if materials run late or your contractor’s calendar is packed, so build in a little cushion when you plan.

Whether a finished basement counts toward your home’s official square footage depends on local rules. Many areas only include below-grade space if it has code-approved egress, fully finished walls, ceilings, and floors, plus consistent heating.

Check with your local assessor or building department before you start; meeting those standards can affect taxes, appraisals, and resale value.

Building codes require a checklist: dedicated heat and electrical service, a code-approved stairway, and at least one egress window or exterior door. Walls, ceilings, and floors must be fully finished and meet insulation, ventilation, and fire-separation standards. If you add a bedroom, you’ll also need a closet, proper clearances, and safe exits. If you change the layout later, be ready to update the space so every new room still meets today’s code.
